Heavy Barrel has a similar thing, only the keys open chests in the stage rather than lockers at the end of the levels.

MARGINAL DOGGING ERUPTION

Dog waiting state = GLITCH FACTORY. The first two run onscreen but if you hop over and let them resume waiting, they'll glitch you too! I call this misfortune DOG HANDCUFFS.

NB: Exploding a waiting ninja dog with ninjitsu will not glitch!

007 SHITOU or JAMES BOND THE DUEL: only gave this a quick spin and wasn't too impressed, particularly since as usual for Tengen the JP version ain't cheap. But I do find its slight Rolling Thunder / Flashback (or even Elevator Action Returns) resemblances a little intriguing. Gunplay feels calculating and cinematic, bullets connecting with brutal impact. Putting a return round in a thug's chest after springing out of a doorway has particularly satisfying gravity. My bad controls radar was pinging away, though. Crouching then changing direction is a herculean undertaking, and although Bond's insouciant firing animations are very cool, having to press down+shot simultaneously to shoot down stairways feels jarringly wrong. And if one thing isn't cinematic it's Bond's snappy Contra flip, whose unnervingly jerky arc is shared by that of his grenades.

Dunno if it was just poor sound emulation, but the voice samples are so bad they're God. Bond sounds like an asthmatic donkey when he takes a slug. "Oh Jamez!" "EEE-HURRR"

Feels like it would require some working around at the very least, but might warrant further inspection! edit: but for now I'm sayin' FUCK THIS IMMA PLAY EA RETURNZ ON MUH SATTY INSTEAD

Just get Rolling Thunder 3, BIL. That's the safe bet.

Although I don't particularly think the motorcycle/jetski levels add much to the formula, the special weapons sure do. Flash Grenades will stun enemies anywhere on the screen, and if those enemies required multiple hits to kill, they can now be killed with one bullet as they stand there dazed momentarily.

You must select the weapon you believe will be of most use according to the layout of the level you are about to tackle, once you clear the level that particular weapon is no longer available. You can play a level and opt out of using a Special Weapon, in which case you get a life bar bonus instead.

Tight game, really like it :)

Oh yeah, no question about RT3! I'll be picking that up somewhere down the line for sure.

I gave up on Bond pretty quickly after that post. It does have a neat Elevator Action Returns sense of the player and enemies being dwarfed by a vast, perilous environment. But unlike EAR it handles like a friggin' dog, making it difficult to just enjoy blasting fuckers off ledges and down lift shafts. I find it kind of perversely amusing to go from a fundamentally solid action game to one absolutely riddled with fundamental problems like this. One less game to chase, bahahaha! Later ROMZ.

I've picked up a few Genesis games to add to my Japanese collection, all games I wanted BITD but at the time no dice.

Subterrania, because I like Thrust/Gravitar type stuff: not as difficult as the internet has made it out to be, very nice graphics and music (although the 16-bit Euro techno is not really my thing).

Paperboy, never played the arcade but this is really good, and understandably has a high skill ceiling. All the sounds are satisfyingly arcade-like.

Sunset Riders, great RnG despite the cuts.

I've got Codemaster's Psycho Pinball on the way as well, good take on Pinball Dreams/Fantasies.

Obviously you need a PAR2 or Mega Key of some description to boot the region locked ones if you have the Japanese console.

Poor Timothy Dalton. One of the best Bond actors got one of the shittiest movies (if memory serves! - though The Living Daylights was pretty good) - and one of the worst game adaptations, despite its apparent production values (how much does "plays well with stairs" cost, anyway?) Not much, and when you've only got two or three things with your brand, it matters! Pretty much my memory of it from a while ago. I remember going back and forth through hallways looking for stuff - just that kind of picky and aimless "we gotta have a map" gameplay, rather than "graphics exist to blast at" you find in more sensibly designed games.

I'm mopping my forehead at the realisation that if SHIT OU had been a Living Daylights license, I'd doubtlessly be compelled to get a copy - or else, forever regret Rambo III being without its natural Mujahideentastic companion! Jimmy and Johnny (and their new pals) vs The Grouchy Ol' Bear! How fortunate indeed that Sly Stallone's quite loveable Senjou no Okami knockoff remains at rock-bottom prices, unlike Shit Ou ^_~

License To Kill is good for at least one thing, via the miracle of novelisation:

Gardner was faced with a challenge because his books maintain the continuity of Ian Fleming's original novels (albeit updated), and, in Fleming's and Gardner's continuity, Felix Leiter lost his leg in a shark attack in Live and Let Die. As a result, Gardner's book requires readers to suspend disbelief as James Bond comes to terms with his friend being maimed twice using the same method - complete with the same note ("He disagreed with something that ate him").

A quick testing with emulators, and the jumping seems to be handled better in the SMS port... Graphics make also a bigger impact on the 8bit little brother... But the MD one has Matt Furniss' soundtrack and it's pretty rad for that.

Lightening Force arrived, so I've been playing a lot of that. I thought Thunder Force games were supposed to be easy.

Based on this thread I picked up Rolling Thunder 2, but I'm not sure if I totally dig it. I can't make it past those panthers on stage 2.

Finally, another good game being played: Chiki Chiki Boys. Classic Capcom material. I couldn't find the "final key" when I beat the game, so I got the "bad" ending. What a bummer - does anyone know the location? It's a really good game though, even if it feels like your sword takes forever to kill the bosses (especially if you don't upgrade). The last two levels really ramp up the challenge.

Answer: strike under the last boss's throne several times, you'll notice you are hitting something. Keep doing it for the games final key that leads to the final blue dragons eye.

Found by a poster on Sega-16: Extra stages for the password system in Castlevania Bloodlines:
http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread ... -Passwords

These aren't actually new stages, just ones not known to be accessible via the password system. You can start at the very end of the game!

Incidentally, one of the quirks I like in Vampire Killer (MD) is the game going straight to the next stage after a boss, where Bloodlines displays the password screen first. Makes it feel even faster-paced, especially combined with the Short Demo Skip option (Hard Corps could've used that, moreso than VK/BL).

I wonder if game overing at the final stages in VK will give you a password for them? edit: nope, seems in VK a Game Over anywhere after 6-4 will give you a password back there.

Thanks to Bloodreign's help above, I managed to 1CC Chiki Chiki Boys a few nights ago. All in all, it is a fantastic game with some really fun levels, especially later on. Classic cutesy Capcom atmosphere, with a touch of Dragonball in the character designs. Kudos to Capcom for making a final boss that's a circus clown seem actually threatening (in a silly way of course :) ).

I also like how continues are a physical object you have to buy, and how dying removes half of your gold (making it next to impossible to get better weapons/shields), which drives home the 1CC goal.

On a fluke, I also won an auction of Gain Ground for super-cheap. I'd also like to say that the game is really awesome.

It certainly is. Surprisingly deep and entertaining once you figure out the game mechanics.

I still need to pick that one up, though I have it in the Genesis collection for PS2. The SMS port is also surprisingly good, despite being a bit choppy. I like how both versions have new stages not in the original arcade game.

You are welcome, that's the one big change from the arcade to the Genesis port. ;)

Love that game when I first got the second Capcom Classics Collection for the PS2, knew about the Genesis port at the time. I picked it up while it was still under $20 loose (a problem I later remedied on my Texas vacation when I bought the case for the game at a shop for $2, yes an official case in a nice find), it sounds great too, really makes the Genesis shine in the music department with Chiki Chiki Boys.

Don't know if i should ask this here or in the shmups board, but oh well...
Is Curse supposed to have such a bad, choppy framerate, or is it a emulator problem?

Yes, it's awfully animated, and the colors are... well, just don't call your computer manufacturer's technical service, no need to contact the emu dev as well.
And please don't buy the game.

I've been on a huge Genesis/MD kick lately.

Sonic - Learning to speedrun this. Pretty tough, a lot of tricks in the game save a ton of time, but are so hard to pull off. Its very hard to weigh risk/reward in this game. Still fantastic, and I have about 9 levels down to a time I am happy with.

Shadow Dancer - Actually only popped this in to test it, figured I would get along better with Revenge of Shinobi and planned on playing that first... but hot damn, this game is fantastic. Clicked with me almost instantly. Switching between Shuriken and Shinobi modes for variety, but I think I might actually prefer the game without shurikens. Bitch with blade-wheel arms ended the first few runs, but I'm able to make it into the 4th Round stages fairly consistently now.

Decap Attack - Another game I really only put in to test, had heard good things but wasn't quite sure what to expect. Game is a lot of fun, and its interesting how one of the main mechanics in the game (throwing your head) is a powerup, and whether you have it or not can change how you have to approach some areas. The fluidity of throwing your skull, as well as being able to retrieve it upon contact, is very nice, and combined with the air flutter that Chuck can do, I think the game feels good enough to consider for a possible future speedrun attempt. I don't use the items at all though, never really felt like they were needed.

Also, just got a new speaker system that is perma-hooked up to my Genesis. All of the above games sound incredible now. Even Sonic Spinball was kicking the sub pretty nicely.

Made it to the Round 4 boss in Shadow Dancer. Holy hell, much more nasty than the previous bosses. My strat has just been to try to stay on the other side of the screen than him when he stops (Only consistent way I've found to avoid his fireballs, although bumping into him might be viable to dodge them as well).

The problem is, it seems random where the heads stop on the wheel, and even when they stop in the right place, I had to have enough time to get across the screen before he even shoots his fireballs, or else I do no damage. Even when all those things happen right, I don't hit him half the time.

Still was able to cheese him down to about 2 hits left before running out of time on the clock (First time happening in this game). Should be able to clear him out today. Hoping to find some strat that is faster on him.

Also learned Sonic's Spring Yard 2 and 3 yesterday. That just leaves Lab 1 and 3, Star 3, and the zip in Scrap 2 to learn before I can start doing full runs. Zip in Marble 2 is still giving me fits though, so I may have to put it aside and just do the stage for now.
