Or, instead, we could pick on the girls and feel good about ourselves.

Adding an easier mode is just good business sense. Yeah, those of us who are shmup freaks just want pure, unadulterated arcade goodness, but there aren't enough of us for Taito even to break even.

should i go the modchip route, or just import a used ps2 from yahoo?
I would personally suggest just going all the way and importing a Japanese console... it's the most effective and reliable way to play Japanese software (plus they come in some really cool colours).
I own a modded PS2 and playing imports is easy. Just get a slide card, and use it to play imports, it works like a charm! If you're not too sure about that, you can always use a HD loader and put the ISO image on the PS2 Hard Drive. To me, the best way to play imports is getting the game, copy the disc image onto a computer hard drive, burn it on a DVD-R, and play it on a modded PS2. You play a back-up copy of the game while the orginal disc is safe and stays in great condition. :)

If you own the game, BACK IT UP!!!!

Hey, what if the arrange mode was a cave style version of the game? Best of both worlds right there. Medalling with cave bullets would be pretty nice.

Too much to ask from taito though....

The foundation of Ibara is based on the rank and raizing feel. If you don't like Raizing, extreme rank, or getting your ass kicked, don't buy this game. There are plenty of CAVE games already. So the story ends.

You know I was excited about this game awhile back when I found out about the modular weapon system.

But then I heard you shouldn't pick up the best weapons because it increases your rank too much.

Pain is just weakness leaving the body.
What more can I say I wouldn't be here today if the old school didn't pave the way.

i've seen more PS2 Ibara shots and noticed some differences
First there is a Rank meter on the bottom of the screen
and there is a life meter for the bosses.
I've only seen the yoko(not tate) and I don't know if it is because the screen shots are small but the graphics are really pixelated and blurry

Where did you see these shots?

Anyway, I'm really happy they've included a life meter for the bosses!!
I really like that in a shmup. The rank meter is cool too, at least for training purposes. It could be considered cheating to some. Anyway, I just hope these are options that you can turn off if you like, for the true arcade experience.

I'm going to assume that tate will be an available option!

Thanks for the link, lazydazy.

The pics do look awful. There's no way the final game will look like that, it looks like an Atari Lynx game being played on a 52" screen. I remember seeing early pics of Mushi and they looked like a pixelated mess as well, so I wouldn't worry.

I would bet these are all pics from the new 'arrange mode' in the game. If you note, it is only one player (there is no room for a 2P to come in), and there are many changes. The rank meter, the boss meter, plus the score on top is quite different--if you note the score is in regular numerals from 10 mill and up, something the original didn't have (the first digit changed to an alphabetic value--A,B,C, etc). Also, some pics show crazy high scores like 14 million points (the WR in this game is something like 16-18 mill I believe). So, I'd bet these are pics from the arrange mode, which will have higher scoring than the original game.

Most likely.

Those pics aren't tate though, hence the shitty look.

Frankly, I think such a feature is long overdue: it's about time that players were able to rely on something other than repetitive trial and error to determine the status of such an integral part of the game's engine. It's not quite my long-desired "optional rank" setting, but for accessibility's sake it's definitely a step in the right direction.

And for the hardcore types, I doubt it's a "standard" feature, you should be able to keep things in Pure Blind Masochism mode if you so please. As such, leave all the "constant whining" to wusses like myself. :P

thats right! leave all of the constant whining to wusses like bulletmagnet!

anyway, i'm also glad to see a rank meter. it will certainly help me learn the ropes more effectively than stumbling blind through battle garegga. observing cause and effect in your own play style, in an environment that actually makes room for it will be invaluable.

Yep, that's for sure, and that fits perfectly in what Plasmo calls 'girls mode'. An arrange mode for beginners, like the one of Mushi and not for example the one of Galuda, which can offer another challeng to the expert players.

At least, I hope we're talking about an arrange mode and not some arcade mode useless (imho) options.

Wow, yoko mode looks like ass. Pray that tate is included, as this game would be next to impossible without it.

The rank and boss meters should be useful in determining how rank affects the hitpoints of a boss (and why on occasion you can hit them with two or three hadou and still not kill them ^_-), as well as allowing players with not a lot of Raizing experience to craft a good strategy.

Hopefully you can turn off both meters in the Options menu, for the proper arcade look and feel. Nothing beats repetitive trial and error ^_-

NCSX just opened up pre-orders today for Ibara. Priced at US $65, it's set to ship on Feb 23rd. It looks like there won't be an LE version.

Maybe because it just hasn't been announced yet. That, or maybe Mushi's LE bombed.

And what would they offer with the LE version of the game? 12yr old versions of Dr Teresa? ^_-
A figurine-based LE would be somewhat impractical given the amount of individual characters in the game. They'd have to either make the figures really small to accomodate, or give they buyer some indication of which character is packed into the box. Because of this, I'm more curious about how they'll handle the figurine(s) for the OST. (Pinky St sized maybe?)
