Questions about PS3
I've decided to buy a PS3. I have some questions:
Is there any official scart cable to plug it into my CRT TV?. I have one for my XBOX 360 and works great.
Is there any PSX-to-PS3 controller adapter that works well and is totally lag free. My arcade control panels use PSX controllers. I have two adapters for XBOX 360 and both are perfect.
Do I have to pay to download demos, free indie games, etc? I'm not interested in online play at all, but I want to download and purchase some games.

Re: Questions about PS3
PS1, PS2 and PS3s all use the same RGB Scart cable. With the PS3 the output is restricted to 480i though (just like the xbox 360)
There are good adapters, sorry I don't know a good brand for sure though.
You can purchase games without a Plus (paid) account. You can also run video streaming apps without a PlayStation Plus account (unlike xbox 360)

Re: Questions about PS3
Alright, so for the part of the video, there shouldn't be any problem with a good RGB cable as long as I'm sure it's true RGB, not composite. As for the adaptors, I'm more worried because I've read it's a lottery. It seems that there are many models which were working fine and after updating the console, they became a useless piece of hardware (thanks, Sony). I think I'll have to buy some models before purchasing the console and test them in my friend's PS3 with my control panels.

Re: Questions about PS3
i read that PAL PS3's cant do 60hz , so you may want to get a NTSC to ensure your games run at 60hz.
do a google to confirm that PAL PS3's cant do 60hz

In 2014 and we still have to deal with the 50/60hz issue?

Re: Questions about PS3
Even better you will be dealing with letterboxing on some games simply because they aren't optimized for 4:3 SDTV. In those cases text will often be unreadable. Same thing on 360.

Re: Questions about PS3
I have a 4:3 CRT with my Xbox 360 and I'm happy with it. I don't have to worry about resolutions, lag, ghosting, jaggies, etc. It's a shame most games now don't offer 4:3 format though.

And it's just a firmware thing too. "If enough people request the feature we could make it happen in a future firmware update" or something like that is what the Sony rep said. And that was years ago.Elaphe wrote:In 2014 and we still have to deal with the 50/60hz issue?

Re: Questions about PS3
Are you guys talking only in Scart RGB output right? Because my PAL PS3 output in both 50/60hz trough HDMI: PAL PS1 games in 50hz, NTSC USA in 60hzi read that PAL PS3's cant do 60hz , so you may want to get a NTSC to ensure your games run at 60hz.

Re: Questions about PS3
of course, just SD through RGBs or component. Once you go ED or HD, you get proper 60Hz from any PAL PS3 system.

Re: Questions about PS3
Blargh, i buyed some PS1 games from USA psn store. So if i connect it to my crt with RGB scart they will be in 50hz. What a shame on Sony.
By the way, do you guys play PS1 titles with smooth on/off and upscaling to 1080 on/off?

Re: Questions about PS3
I tried playing a PSX game one time on the PS3 with upscaling and it's really ugly. I think the emulator they have on the PSP looks far better, maybe also due to the smaller screen.

Re: Questions about PS3
I have found this information about how to convert a PAL console to a NTSC console to avoid this problem. I don't know, however, how to edit the file they mention:
Ok guys i have the solution! If you are like me and have a PAL ps3 in the united states you probably will want to connect it to an sd tv at some point. Maybe you need to connect an ntsc or asian console to a pal tv. here is the solution. get your xregistry file and change the region in the registry. you will have to change the following 4 settings to have your ps3 working in ntsc 60hz in xmb and on any game or blue ray...
/setting/system/region (change this from 0 to 1) your console now plays games in ntsc 60hz.
/setting/bddvd/dvdRegionCode (change from 2 to 1) should allow ntsc dvds
/setting/bddvd/bdRegionCode (change from 2 to 1) should allow ntsc bluerays.
/setting/display/tvSystem (change from 1 to 0) makes xmb display in ntsc 60hz 480.
this should allow you to completely convert your pal system to ntsc within minutes. the only way to tell you have a pal is by looking at the console!

Personal preference. 1080p, no filter. I love pixels.Overkill wrote:Blargh, i buyed some PS1 games from USA psn store. So if i connect it to my crt with RGB scart they will be in 50hz. What a shame on Sony.

Re: Questions about PS3
I had a question regarding HDMI:
So Component = YPbPr
Scart = RGB
HDMI = ???
From the way it looks, HDMI can do both RGB and YCbCr, is that correct?

Yes, you can change it on the option menu. But i don't know if it only affects movies, or games also.

Copy-pasting from another thread where a problem about getting PS1 games to display in proper 4:3 on HDTVs was discussed:
kel wrote:Is it just me or does the PS3 mess up the aspect ratio when upscaling PS1 and PS2 games?
It looks perfect with the scaler turned off at 480p but it looks slightly wider than it should be when scaled to 720p or 1080p.
It's been bugging me for a while. Just wanted to see if anyone else had noticed it or if I was missing something.
TheRedKnight wrote:I had similar woes back when CVS2 was released on the PSN. Believe me or not, but these issues appear even when using SDTVs. Ridiculous. But I found a solution.
To verify that I really sorted it out back then I tested my settings with two very similar games, King's Field III on disc versus Shadow Tower which was a digital download. Both display exactly the same, and run in 4:3.
My settings are: PS/PS2 upscaler set to Full Screen and Smoothing set to OFF. And after I've launched a game, I go to Other settings and change the ratio from Fullscreen to Normal. As far as I know this is the only way to get a "good" result if you are "only" using a PS3.
EDIT: I'm using a fat 40GB Hong Kong model PS3 with an Eizo EV2313W monitor through a Pioneer PDA-V100HD.

It only affects movies. Games are output in RGB, which can be set to limited or full range. On 360 it's possible to output games in YCbCr though.Overkill wrote:Yes, you can change it on the option menu. But i don't know if it only affects movies, or games also.

You need to be able to access dev flash 2 to get at the file you want to modify; the system would need to be on CFW or be able to have it installed.Elaphe wrote:I have found this information about how to convert a PAL console to a NTSC console to avoid this problem.
