Has anyone done any serious digging into how much the yakuza have profited from otaku culture, and how closely they pursue that demographic? As the countless pictures from people who pointlessly bought 50+ of the same anime item to show their love for the series can attest, Japanese otaku are known for being very easily parted with their money. Gangsters the world over love people with that trait.

The Yakuza doesn't really operate like that. The only money the straight up take is from bars they used to put underground (no phone signal) and charge 100,000 yen for a drink and block the door w/ large men. Come back - the shop is gone. That's more of a 90's thing though. Over with now. For the rest of the stuff it's just the usual sex industry and extortion.
