Any new shmups being released for 2014?
Any new shmups being released for 2014?
Does anybody know of any good shmups coming out for consoles this year? I see Raiden IV was just recently released on PS3. Any other new stuff coming out this year? I'm kind of in the dark at the current state of shmups. If only we could see more Saturn/Dreamcast days for modern shmups it would be great.
Currently Playing:Astebreed,Crimzon Clover, Valhellio

Which console is Crimzon Clover being released on?

R-Type Dimensions PS3 will be out in NA / EU next week.
On the western front, Jamestown Plus is coming to PS4 sometime this year, and I think Resogun is supposed to be getting some sort of update/DLC, too. (Is Resogun actually any good? Never tried it myself.)
EDIT: oh, and there's a Steel Empire remake coming to 3DS.

It's already out for Windows, but Revolver360 Re:Actor is being ported to the PS4. I have no idea if it will be out this year, though.

I thought R-Type Final was the last one they were supposed to make? Is dimensions being made by a new team or what?GSK wrote:R-Type Dimensions PS3 will be out in NA / EU next week.

It's a collection of the first two R-Type games that has been out on 360 for a while.xorthen wrote: I thought R-Type Final was the last one they were supposed to make? Is dimensions being made by a new team or what?
Re: Any new shmups being released for 2014?
At the moment, apart from the games ACS mentioned and a few digital next-gen titles, the future is looking pretty bleak at the moment, to be honest.
Re: Any new shmups being released for 2014?
Dimensions is a 2.5D port/remake of the first two games by a company called Tozai Games. It's been out on X360 for ages but is only just now coming to PS3.xorthen wrote: I thought R-Type Final was the last one they were supposed to make? Is dimensions being made by a new team or what?

I haven't kept it up to date. But there's a thread on new 2014 releases: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?t=49532

Don't worry, there will always be Doujin. It's just the nice graphics and presentation that may become a rare treat.Mero wrote:the future is looking pretty bleak at the moment, to be honest.

On the other hand, the doujin game Astebreed is one of the most graphically advanced STGs ever made, perhaps rivaled only by Sine Mora. Agreed, it is a visually stunning game. It's a sequel to ether vapor, I wonder if it will also make its way to steam.Pretas wrote:On the other hand, the doujin game Astebreed is one of the most graphically advanced STGs ever made, perhaps rivaled only by Sine Mora. ...and its a bit meh. The 3d view is just wrong. And turning it to "classic" doesn't really do what it should. Some backdrops still appear to be in HD or starfield is missing. Just looks wrong somehow. Ended up digging out R-Types on ps2.GSK wrote:Dimensions is a 2.5D port/remake of the first two games by a company called Tozai Games. They could just release a R Type collection for crying out loud.

I didn't think Dimensions was bad, it plays fine and I like the way you can play using the original 2D graphics but cropped (not stretched) in 16:9. I agree that the 3D doesn't look right though. You kind of expect R-Type to look grittier like Gradius 5 or something, but instead it has this cheap cartoony HD-ified N64 game look to it.

Wolflame, by Astro Port is supposed to be released soon. Now there's a video:

Re: Any new shmups being released for 2014?
There always was a cartoony angle to R-Type, just look at some of the ground enemies and pow armors or listen to the sound effects, it was probably amplified a little in Dimensions because of the tendency to present old defining franchises as cute company mascots rather than something new and badass that's gonna tear you a new one.ACSeraph wrote:I didn't think Dimensions was bad, it plays fine and I like the way you can play using the original 2D graphics but cropped (not stretched) in 16:9. Re: Any new shmups being released for 2014?
yeah there's no denying it's going to be a ghost game
as usual
EDIT
on R-Type Dimensions
I recently played the first one fully on 3D mode
the two main things I noticed were a bit off were
(1) the resilience and aggressiveness of the 5th boss, which is a lot stronger than normal
(2) some gaps in the 6th stage are really, really tight, to the point where it demands much more attention for you to navigate the level
I didn't try the game in the original 2D resolution because it looks awful on an HD tv
