Thanks for the encouragement, though I haven't played DOJ since 2009. Wanted to preserve the little bit of sanity I had left, so I never bothered progressing any further.

Is this in reference to the iOS version?
Play Normal, Auto-Bomb ON and Auto-Hyper ON.
For stage 3 second half, if you make even one wrong move you're walled and trapped by bullets, so find and watch a superplay, make notes on how he handles each of the popcorn spam waves and replicate it yourself.
Stage 4 you'll have similar issues due to the turret groups that move on rails along the bottom of the screen. You might want to watch/mimic a superplay here too.
Once you have first loop clear with no continues, move up to Hell and try again.

I just noticed something cool while savestate practicing. I don't know where to put it so I'll put it here:

DDP DoJ stage 3 boss final attack. Pay attention to how the red spinner moves - it picks a random direction and orientation. Call the direction A. It goes A, A, A, STOP. Then from that SAME orientation it goes B, B, B, STOP. Now it's back where it started! It's an endless loop.
This leads to a very useful property:
When it first starts firing, figure out which of the 'sweeping quadrants' will spend the most time in front of the boss. Move into that quadrant and stay with it as it sweeps left and right rhythmically.
Now you never have to dodge red (except at the very beginning), just blue.
And by being aware of the red's changing back and forth, you will start to get a strong feel for when the gun pods are going to deploy.

it's really not that hard to start. please stop using exy, please play it like you would ddp. there's nothing "hardcore" about any of this
Patashu wrote:Yes, DaiOuJou is very unforgiving for a newcomer to the genre. It's a lot harder than the game that came before and came after it, and many parts of it are designed to be very aggressive if you don't come into them with a good plan (Stage 3.....).
no it is not no no no no jesus christ has anyone here actually played ddp or doj

if you bombspam in doj, it becomes ddp
if you don't bombspam in ddp, it becomes doj exy

also that list and most of the lists like it have always been considered garbage

i swear to god if exy was never in doj people would have never thought the game was particularly hard

DOJ with Shotia is quite bit harder than DDP for a survival 1-All.

Despatche what are you talking about stop using exy? I'm playing DOJ. Read the description. Also, this game is hard. Quit trying to sound like a show off autistic man child because you are better at something than someone else.

Not really. Bullet density in DOJ doesn't seem as high. Plus Hypers.

Exy is in both white and black label versions, though.

Have to admit, one of the reasons I like DOJ so much is because it's stupid hard.

Every time I die I am trying to analyze what I did wrong. The bullets and patterns are so hard for me to memorize and they are too fast. I'm having a sensory overload. I fell asleep last night seeing nothing but blue and pink dots when I closed my eyes. Surely, this is what hell sort of feels like.

lol I didn't realize how funny that was till I reread it. Kind of reminds of yagawa when he said:
"When you can say you love shooting games, I get the sense you're no longer a normal person."
But I am with you on this one. I like DOJ only because of it's difficulty. I guess people who like shmups equate challenge with fun.

Honestly you get used to it, the more you play the more you get desensitized. And it's tough to go back to other games. DOJ is like the crack of shmups(Not even once). You go back to other slower easier shmups and they feel so slow.

Ah, I know this very well. It happens with me on pretty much all Cave games, mainly on the latter stages and/or 2nd-loop stuff. Mostly due to how they love to fire 1 bazillion aimed bullets at you. They kinda form a "line" which you can't go through, it's hard to escape being trapped even if you stream hard, at least with me. (Anyway, I can only get to 2nd-loop and the like with save-states cause I suck) :P

Also, most Cave shmups have a total of 5 stages, right? I noticed that stages 1 and 2 are always pathetic, stage 3 has a reasonable difficulty, and stage 4 and 5 are insane. Dunno if it's my impression, but I always see a massive jump in difficulty from stage 4 and on.

Well, it's not quite so simple for me at least. There are very challenging games I consider quite boring, and there easy games that I still enjoy. Ideally one would want to have both good design and challenge.

I actually had way more trouble 1-ALL'ing DOJ with Shotia than with Exy.
Sure Shotia has a lot more bombs but the thing with her is that you actually have to use all those bombs because she is just so shit as a shottype. And don't even get me started on the 2nd loop.

Exy is a lot more flail friendly and you don't really need the Shotia bombs as the game gives you plenty of hypers.

exy really is a more flail friendly but people default to bombs bombs bombs and dying to refill like it's garegga or something, and you can cheese the first loop with shotia or leinyan ok through that. i think leinyan's a little better for survival here, though i feel like it's the opposite in ddp for some reason. you know way more than i do though!
xorthen wrote:Despatche what are you talking about stop using exy? I'm playing DOJ. Read the description. Also, this game is hard. Quit trying to sound like a show off autistic man child because you are better at something than someone else.
are you playing doj or are you playing ddp? exy is the girl that only lets you have one or two bombs ever. i'm trash at this game, and a lot of games, but that doesn't mean i don't look at the game.

if you just say "ddp's hard too", that's fine. but the thing is, most people think doj is a bazillion times harder than ddp for some reason, when it's only very slightly harder to start (once you try to superplay it, things obviously change). i do just as well in one as i do in the other, and most of the patterns between the two are nearly equivalent... only real difference is doj has no stage 4 anymore.

On default difficulty? I'm not done with it yet, but so far it's not as challenging as Survival in the first Burnout (you need to complete Championship to unlock it).
For what it's worth, I'm at the Story mission where Blue Falcon explodes when I slow down too much.

All these crazy hard Japanese danmaku shmup games, they're so insane that older shooting games are just pathetically easy pieces of shit.

*plays Raiden II* *sniped*
*plays Gradius III (AC)* *lava stage'd*
*plays Battle Garegga* *max rank*

More seriously: Savestate practice. A lot. (assuming you're on MAME; if playing on a port, stage select.)

The last few missions are significantly harder, but more importantly, in order to unlock all ships you have to clear Story on Very Hard (after which normal mode is downright relaxing). Easily one of the hardest things I've done.

Agreed. While my first scrubby 1-All was with Type-B Shotia, once I made the switch to Type-A Exy I found it a bit easier to clear the first loop. At least in Black Label.

Another thing that greatly helped was turning WAIT CONTROL ON in the 360 port LMAO. I was stuck on stage 5 for months not realizing I didn't have any slowdown

So many awesome players here. There's gotta be more like me.

I did chain stage 1...that took months. 1-cc is not even a fathomable task.

But many agree that while DOJ is brutal, it's also fair. Practice and improvement is so gratifying!

DOJ is a great game. First loop really isn't all that bad though. I'm not really one to get into the 2nd loop because I'm really not that good.

I full chained 1-1 in 15 minutes by putting on a superplay in another screen. Most unfun thing I've ever done in a shooting game :/

You've missed the fun of learning the hitboxes and the rhythm of this game. Imitating superplays like a robot isn't fun at all. Just sayin'.

People had to learn DOJ's hitboxes?
Also I looped both WL and BL so I don't need to know that.

But that is how loop 1 scoring works.
