The slowest shmups ever?

Post by nsonthi77@hotmail.com »

What shmups out there that drive you nuts because its soo damn slow?

I think this title goes to Blazeon, a hori shooter on the SNES. OMG, this game goes so slow I thought I wasn't moving at certain part of the game. To make matters worst, sometimes you would scroll on for almost a minutes without enemies in sight...talk about putting me to sleep.

Terra Cresta 3D (Saturn)
Super R-Type (SNES)
R-Type 2 (Amiga)
Raiden Trad (SNES)

Those programmers had no shame.

Obviously you guys didn't play many NES shooters. A huge portion of them were plagued by horrible slowdown and long periods of inactivity.

Sky Jaguar on the MSX (while not having shortage of action) moves really slowly.

Yeah , being slow doesn't mean being boring or badly programmed.

R-Type 2 is slow, but it's full of action.. it's slow on purpose.

As R-Type Delta also is slow.

There's an MSX game called "SF Violence" (Or SF Violence is just part of a long japanese title, I am not sure), which is not a shmup, but a borderline (An overhead scrolling shooter), which is very, VERY fast to the point of being unplayable...... up until you try to scroll the screen, then the game becomes very, VERY slow, to the point of being unplayable.....

You probably can imagine now, the game is a real mess.

Edit: OH, just found it, it seems the game is actually called " D' ", and it's from Technosoft!

The first two levels of Zed Blade: Operation Raganarok on the Neo Geo. It takes a while to get used to how obscenely slow the background scrolls and the gaps of inactivity and weakness of the enemies.

Then you get to level three.

Hellfire is very slow on PAL-Mega Drives.
hmm.. Radiant Silvergun is a bit slow if you compare it to ikaruga or some other comparable shooters.

Ever collected only Speed Ups in Gradius 1? That may is the fastest shoot em up ever ;)

Like Kiken said in his NeoGeo video, Ghost Pilots is really slow both in ship speed and pacing.

R-Type Final, Delta all start off too slow.

Once again, the ever popular, Deep Blue.

Although I enjoy Hellfire, its a little slow.

Top missions on Thunderforce II, too slow.

He's right, enemies move faster and shoot faster later on but the overall speed of the ship and the pacing is deadly slow.

Silpheed: The Lost Planet.

For the first couple of levels, I was waiting for the real enemies to come out and attack me. Sadly, the game didn't become remotely challenging til stage 3. :/

Raiden Fighters Jet.

Just kidding. Solar Striker for the original Game Boy is quite a slow-paced game, unless you're trying for 100% kills.

DANGUN FEVERON LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

um, I might have to mention Truxton 2, not because it actually is slow, but because it takes forever for anything to happen. I got to level 3 on my first crack and must have been playing for at least 20 minutes. I haven't played that one much since.

Space Mega Force/Super Aleste got REALLY slow at times. Some of those middle levels just drag. Fun game anyway though. :p

Yeah, that seems to be the case with a lot of shooters developed for consoles first. Since, they aren't trying to destroy your credits as fast as possible, the creators seem to put these empty spots in with the idea of building tension (or something).

The first 4 (of 5) stages can be completed in about 30-60 seconds. Very fast.

Kyuuin (or Vacuum Kids). I was literally nodding off while playing it, which has NEVER happened to me before in a videogame. Sad thing was, I most likely could have finished the game asleep... :/

Strike Gunner for the SNES. You want a slow game with levels that each take about 10 minutes to complete? That's the game for you.
