Got my BVM-D20F1U

Post by c0dehunter »

I finally decided to drive up and get BVM-D20F1U (local pickup)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sony-BVM-D20F1U ... 7675.l2557

The seller had 3 other units, but two of them had 16:9 bezels (which for retro gaming, 4:3 is a no go, and if you remove them, they monitor looks odd and ugly), so I had to choose between this one, and another one that has some discoloration issue on top of the screen (did not test it, just went along by the eBay's listing description).

So I got the one that seemed the best of them all: nice cosmetics, and good image quality.

However, after I brought it home, I noticed that it has a small chip on the CRT glass, about this size: ==

That, and also two blotches of blue-ish hue on top right, and red-ish on lower left corners of screen (these are barely noticeable). I wish I knew these monitors had a built in pattern test, so I would have tested it thoroughly before purchase.

And visible only on white or bright screens. At first I was really upset about it, but the more I use the monitor, the less I see it I guess.

Another thing that I noticed that the monitor has a loud fan, and even when you turn it on, it keeps running in the Standby mode, so I have to reach over the back and turn the unit off by switching the main on/off button...a bit discomforting.

It has many adjustments, but in all honesty, my 20L seem very much the same and *easier* to use.

I have already bought it and I am not complaining, but I think this would be my last foray into CRT adventuring.

:!: The only thing bothering me is the chip on CRT glass, I guess :!: :|

Chances are good that the blotches of color can be resolved with a good degaussing. The built in degaussing function might not be enough to resolve it, so in that case try an external degaussing coil.

The D models have a white uniformity option. It should be fixable through the menus.

Actually the discolored areas a gone now. The only thing that bothers me is the chip on the CRT glass: if I look at it straight, it is visible, but when I move my head a bit up or down, it becomes invisible.

I wouldn't worry about it mate, shouldn't affect your gaming at all :)

Thanks! I like these monitors so much, that I might go ahead and get a second one as well!

On my PVM -20L for instance, on most shoot'up games (vertical) I would loose screen info (number of lives, scores ,etc), but amazingly on this monitor, everything is displayed in native resolution! How is that possible!

Press the overscan button on the PVM, if it has one. Probably just need to fiddle with the settings and you'll be fine.

Any CRT can display things in "native resolution."
