What shmup would you bring with you if incarcerated

Post by uncletom »

If you would be sentenced to 15 years of isolation in a place far away and deep under ground, with only your necessary life support and one shmup..., what would that shmup be?

You should consider the following before replying;
1. What game would give me the most intellectual satisfaction over this long time span?
2. What game would make me sick, and bore me to death quickest.

Extremely hard question.. I'd take crimzon clover nesica version or some yagawa-game like battle garegga or ibara.
Mushihimesama futari could be interesting too, just because of ultra mode

Gradius III AC. Long, filled with variety, and very, very hard.

Gradius III without hesitation or doubt

But I would definitely weep a river of manly tears at the loss of Ketsui and Dimahoo, and go to my grave feeling incomplete.

Oh shit. It'd need to be something seriously deep and / or hard...
Probably Mars Matrix... Hard to say though. It might be better to choose something I haven't even started to extract maximum time from it. Obviously, I'm a long way from clearing MM, much less getting all of the points available (I doubt even Rob has quite that with his 3 billion score & 5 million exp)... Then there's the Elite mode A which is completely different, and nobody has cleared yet, much less gotten all the points...
Yeah, definately Dreamcast Mars Matrix 8) .

Garegga/Batrider are both solid ideas.

Imperishible Night is one game I can't seem to get sick of.

Part of me is tempted to say Muchi Muchi Pork, because I recognize a great deal of potential there but I keep getting distracted from it. In prison, distractions wouldn't be an issue.

The OP specificies isolation.

In any case, in an actual real prison I wouldn't have Batrider.

Sounds like the sentence in question is actually solitary confinement.

Probably rRootage because the different ship modes would offer variety, plus the graphics would allow me to use my imagination instead of being stuck with the same designs over and over.

That or maybe some hentai shmup.

That's kinda a good point. Not too many shmups can say that they boast 3 different playstyles and 120 levels, 30 of which are RNG based...
On that note, maybe something really long would actually be a good idea for a change... perhaps Varth or Hellsinker. I'm sure there are longer games, too, and harder.

Another one of my contenders would be Gunbird 2 (probably the Dreamcast version, because Morrigan).
To begin with, one loop is insanely difficult, two loops is one of the hardest clears out there. Then once you do that, there are like 6 characters (7 including Morrigan) with fairly different playstyles to master. While you'd probably want to start out reseting every time to get the default stage order, rotating first 3 stages would keep it fresh if you were getting bored with the first 3 in default order / difficulty. Then there's medal chaining...
Even a basic 1-ALL would be pretty hard without save state practice (DC version does have a stage select with a lot of options that you can open by holding down start after the sega logo, but that's not quite save states), so it could last you a long time

I only fear that I'd go insane a little bit faster with GB2 than Mars Matrix, but that would be inevitable with playing a single shmup for 15 years straight without much else to do, I think, regardless of how good it is.

Yeah it would have to be something with a lot of variety.

Dariuses have stage routes, so that's something to consider, but no ship selection.

I think probably Batrider with different modes and difficulties and so many ships is a fine choice. Without access to guides though it would be near impossible to find all the secrets.

Or maybe Raiden Fighters?

Maybe a shmup with online versus. Having a limitless stream of human opponents would keep things fresh.

Same as my top 25 top three. Raiden DX/Garegga/Dragon Blaze.

But I'd rather use the time to make my dream game.

How about I bring a pc, a few c++ books, and some game dev tools and spend the time working on my own awesome shmup to release once I get out?

I think that would be the best thing you could do when you have so much time. And very fun too. Just look at what yotsubane accomplished on his own. But tbh I don't think it's allowed in this hypothetical thought experiment.

I would bring whatever game comes with a gigantic steel file or steel chain cutter.

So probably some old Infocom adventure game. I wonder if that mouse spinner thing from Cameltry could do the trick? Maybe if that Swordquest game's special version came with a real diamond, that could also be handy.
