huge point and click adventure game fan. haven't played zack & wiki as it hasn't really appealed to me.

from my experience
Spoiler
a lot of modern P+C adventures have been pretty mediocre outside of daedalic entertainment and wadjeteye though Broken Age pt 1 was a good adventure game-lite experience.

I think the upcoming title I'm most excited for is Ithaka of the Clouds/Council of the Crows (Jonas Kyratzes dry, punny, and politically charged writing is fantastic)

I did not like it. It has a Sierra-esque penchant for hiding unforeseeable deaths all over the landscape, but unlike in Sierra adventures that let you save anywhere, dying can mean erasing over a half hour's worth of progress if you're out of golden revival tickets - forcing you to go through the motions to re-solve puzzles, and run around the same areas to re-gather all the necessary coins you lost. Most of the puzzles are either nonsensical, pointless exercises in remote waggling, or both.

Would escape/puzzle adventure point & click games count, because I'm a huge fan for them.

I mean... I didn't even play it so my opinion is very superficial. it's more or less just the way it looks that turned me off. granted, adventure games don't have to look good to be good (look at the Jonas Kyratzes games I play lol)... but something about the sly cooper aesthetic led me to believe it would either fall victim to typical adventure game flaws or it would be an adventure-lite at it's core.

it looks like it received favorable reviews (not by adventuregamers), but most of the time critics are completely off on their adventure game reviews anyway.

plus there's no one notable that wrote/directed the title which much like shmups... means odds are it's not that great but there's the slight chance it can be something special. if it's cheap, it's probably worth checking out for yourself if you're still intrigued.

You have to give Zack & Wiki some respect for being an adventure game aimed at kids that isn't a complete walk in the park, though. There's even a scene where a statue cries blood.

The same guys who made the Walking Dead game also did an excellent series of Sam & Max games.

Episode 4 is a free download on their site, and its hilarious.

the original lucasarts "Sam & Max: Hit The Road" is so insanely good. I only have season 3 of the telltale sam & max games, and tried 301... but didn't like it that much. any seasons you'd really recommend? I'm sure starting from the beginning would be the best bet, but I never really experienced great story telling in Telltale games until TWD... which ended up being more of a visual novel than a point and click adventure.

also.. anyone a fan of Doug Tenapel and contribute to Armikrog.? I'm dying with anticipation due to the lack of project updates lately... but it'll pay off since I have a boxed edition of the game coming :>

The Neverhood and Skullmonkeys were my two favorite games growing up.. mostly due to the claymation/stop motion animation that has only been done in a few gaming titles (most recently the point and click adventure "The Dream Machine" was done in a similar fashion). Armikrog. is a follow up to The Neverhood and I can already feel the heavy nostalgia setting in.

Tenapel is also a huge bigot (really dislike-able guy) who created Earthworm Jim and a handful of graphic novels.. so you probably know of him from that rather than The Neverhood or Skullmonkeys (klaymen klaymen)

Aesthetically it's nowhere near Sly Cooper. Sony platformers animation is typically a polished turd, as much as I enjoyed J&D series. Zack & Wiki animations, on the other hand, are Capcom-good.

3+ PEGI rating is pretty hilarious, considering how plentiful and explicit death scenes are. Meanwhile, audiovisually much more tame Ghost Squad got 16+.

It's fully playable in very brief sessions. For its genre, this seems rather unusual to me.

I've only played the one they put up for free (Season 1, Episode 4 - "Abe Lincoln Must Die"), and so far the only thing preventing me from buying all three is a lack of money. If they're all as good as the game where you can make Honest Abe say "I did not have sex with that woman" then I have no complaints.

Really, considering Sam & Max creator Steve Purcell was involved with ALL incarnations of his characters (including Hit the Road and the Fox cartoon series) you can't go wrong with any of them. I'm sure if Season 3 had problems, it was just a slump, and it'll pick back up eventually.

definitely will give the telltale one's another shot. I never actually read Steve Purcell's work, but I absolutely loved the characters in HTR and I'm sure I will enjoy the others if I give the seasons a chance.

I literally take screenshots of my favorite parts of adventure games during every single playthrough haha. I was using this one for awhile:

I guess that goes to show, never judge a book by it's cover. kid-like graphics/themes never really turn me off. I'm a huge double fine fan and most of those games are marketed towards kids, but I agree... regarding most of the cartoony Sony animation.

that is kind of weird though I'm currently playing Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis in very small sections. seems like something I might have to snag for my Wii just to try out.

From modern point & click adventure games, there can be only one... Gemini Rue. Don't watch any trailers, imagine what if lucasarts or old sierra made an adventure game in veins of Blade Runner and other sci-fi classics, except keep the interface simple to 4 commands while telling a great story, retaining that epic 2D pixel look to it. The story is the strongest point of the game, I won't spoil why. No really, if you love adventure games, you owe yourself to play this one.

Primordia is also fantastic (by WadjetEye - the same guys behind Gemini Rue). Out of their titles...Resonance is the title you'd likely want to skip tho.

It's also partly why I mentioned in my original post that most modern adventure games can't really touch wadjet eye or daedalus entertainment with a few one-offs here and there (i.e. the dream machine, the sea will claim everything, the samaritan paradox, etc..).

edit: and gemini rue is awesome.

It's the same style of humor as the games and the cartoon.

Unfortunately the "Surfin' the Highway" graphic novel (which collects all the comics in one guy) is ludicrously expensive.

Ironically, there actually is a Blade Runner point-n-click adventure game. Made by a company more known for RTS games.

I've almost bought a copy of Zak and Wiki like 3 times now when out shopping but for some reason each time decided otherise.

Starting from season 1 would be best. But it also has the most worst episodes imo (the first two for instance, aren't great). Whereas season 2 only had one I disliked (Moai Better Blues, which is probably my most hated sam and max episode ever).

Season 3 is quite a different style then the first two and I'm not sure I liked it all that much. It feels more like Sam and Max "The Movie" instead of Sam and Max "The Show" if that makes sense.

they actually re-released bad mojo as bad mojo redux about 8-10 years ago and it was remastered and packaged with a lot of cool behind the scenes stuff.

there was a lot of great/unique stuff back then in the genre... especially titles like commander blood, noctropolis, toonstruck, etc..

Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers remake just released a new trailer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwzzKEb04Go

actually looks like a visual downgrade though with the "shiny models".

also kinda crazy that sierra is bringing back the king's quest series. looks like adventure games are making a somewhat comeback.

anyone still be cranking away at point & click adventures? I'm replaying through secret of monkey island with a first timer...and we just got to lechuck's lair (my favorite part). I also started up day of the tentacle remastered that released a couple days ago... and even though I've beaten it before I'm still struggling but having fun.

now I'm really on the fence about paying full price for samorost 3 which is supposedly a massive game compared to the first two, but it looks utterly fantastic.

AND jonas kyratzes (some may know him as the writer from the talos principle) just released a trailer today for council of the crows

Gemini Rue is probably the best recent one I've experienced though I don't remember much from it.

I wouldn't say I'm a FAN of them, but I've played a few series. Telltale did Strongbad's Cool Game For Attractive People (actual title) as well as Sam and Max, right?

I've also played various browser based games of that type, but nothing stick out.

I feel like I'm missing something else that I've played but nothing comes to mind...

@eaglet: actually gonna be checking out broken sword in the next few months. played through the opening scene in the remastered entry title and it seemed pretty decent. wadjeteye (behind gemini rue) just released shardlight too which might be worth looking into. post apocalyptic p+c adventure. I also really liked primordia by them..

@lord satori: they did! I guess they're going to be releasing a batman graphic novel/adventure game soon too, but I haven't really delved into much telltale other than a tiny bit of sam & max and walking dead season 1/2. if telltale did a seinfeld or curb your enthusiasm adventure game, I'd be all over that.

Used to be a big fan of them, still like them even if I don't play them as much anymore. But I'm currently playing Botanicula and it's one of the most adorable p&cs I've played. Loved Samorost since the first time I discovered it back in the day.

I have Tales of Monkey Island on GOG, should get around to that some time... but want to beat Escape first.
