Ya know, Hysteric Empress is pretty goddamn hard...

Also, a WIP of something I'm working on because I love Great Thing and Kyogre is a whale too. \:3/

Sat down to play Burst the last couple of days since I had some tine to waste in the arcade. Getting to Great Thing is surprisingly easy for me, did it a few credits in a row - but holy crap, the guy just won't die! I even managed a Burst Cannon reversal on his fat ass and he keeps going.

Of course I can't really complain too much about the ultimate ten minute boss fight. It's all about being in the moment, but I'd appreciate seeing him go up in a ball of light at some point.

I could not find anything that he resembled in Darius. 'u`

I was going to make a Lapras Zandick II (Lapdick lol) or Ho-oh Megalopros. My friends at chool have been giving me all kinds of ideas from not just the Darius series. Like a Vespiquen Koryuu followed by Beedrill Hibachi. A lot of this stuff really works and fusions are fun. :3

And in case no one noticed (understandably) that's a Silver Pidgey.

Wow, that WIP drawing looks very cool. Mixing Pokemon and Darius bosses is a great idea and given the large number of Water-type Pokemon, you should be able to do a lot of these fusions.
And good luck for the other fusions too!

I see the Darius Love has been running strong while I was away. That's one hell of a collection Mr.Dandy!

I spent the past 3 days primarily over at Taito Hey! playing Darius 1 and 2. Now that's what I call a spring break :D

No missed Darius Extra's Z' course (all up Great Thing):

Image

Learned a few more things about this game while watching an amazing player clear it with a score over 10 million. First of all unfortunately, it appears that white orb score payout in Extra is random just like Vanilla. Also despite some sources around the net saying there is a point limit on bosses, I'm not sure if that is actually true, or if it is reasonably possible to actually reach the limit. Because this guy sat there milking great thing for almost ten minutes and the score kept climbing. Either way though checkpoint milking is pointless since each remaining ship gives you 1 mil. This guy was taking some major risks to milk Great Thing like he did.

Yesterday I finally cleared Darius II on Hey!'s massive custom setup:

Image

This was one of my main shmup goals for the year, so I'm really happy about this. I actually died at Grand Octopus and cleared the final stage naked and powerupless. One of the most intense clears I've ever done as a result. I probly put 20+ credits into the machine and was only able to clear that one time. It really is a brutal game, at least via the course I take. Also I mentioned in this thread before that the game is running on projectors, but now after spending more time with it I realized that's not actually the case, those are just two ridiculously huge LCD screens lined up side by side.

Also saw this and found it amusing:

Here's where the Darius love is at.

Oh, and here:

This was a birthday gift from my girlfriend. Copied from the Darius Odyssey book and hand painted.

ARCF-R07R PLUS シルバーホーク

This is the one from GDarius. I tried to get this done in one weekend which is why the paintjob looks a little rushed and I intentionally tried to match the colours to the other toys and give it a "toy-like" appearance with layers of poorly applied gloss varnish. Modified from an STG Gashapon with skulpy, styrene and cat hair. Should have kitted it, I really like the yellow one from the game - I have no more gashapons to butcher though. Thinking about doing Formula next.

The series is almost complete:

Are there any other Taito games with references to Darius?

Space Invaders '95: Attack of the Lunar Loonies (aka Akkanvader) has a few Darius themed bosses. One is a sampler of a bunch of Darius 1 bosses on a pirate ship, and the other is a giant crab girl dubbed MY HOME DADDY'S GIRL.

I got them both from Amiami. The Legend has long sold out but the Next was still in stock last time I looked.

Nah, as awesome as it would be I doubt there are anymore Darius games in our near future. I'd kill for a game like AC:EX that had more bizzare planetary stages and less outer space stages like the original games do though...

But Darius still seems pretty popular in arcades, so you never know, it may happen someday.

The Darius Love burns on...

Had to head up to the big city last weekend so I had an opportunity to spend some more time with ACEX. My girlfriend came with me (also a gamer), so I introduced her to hyperspace fishing at it's finest. We ended up playing coop all evening until the arcade closed down at midnight and cleared course 1 a couple times. She never managed to survive all the way through the final boss battle with Violent Ruler, but she got close a few times and I was very surprised how quick she caught on to the game. The first time I set my laser to form a barrier between us and the bullets only to have her immediately throw out her own beam to cross refract our lasers into the boss I knew she was the one

Also got a Wii for 500 yen while I was out (god bless Japan). So I finally now have access to the PCE Darius titles.

Super Darius is a pretty commendable port of the first game, although it has some needlessly frustrating points that were not in the original. Mainly the way the powerups fly straight up and off the screen without ever giving you a chance to get them in a lot of the outdoor stages. Also Blue shield powerups being totally invisible on blue backgrounds is some major trolling. Otherwise though I love it. Anyone have any tips for My Home Daddy? That thing is kicking my shit in...

Super Darius II is also quite impressive. It totally shattered my expectations for it, although it's sad to see it's still somewhat affected by unbalanced difficulty and "Omae wa mou shindeiru." recovery. But I can forgive it, because it's full of improvements over the original, and feels totally fresh and new, almost like Darius 2.5. Music is spectacular, I'm loving those 90's-tastic guitar riffs between stages. Also Revenge Shark. He is a shark. And he is out for revenge. Did you kill his mother or something? Was that what the shark midboss in stage 2 actually was?

"tfw no qt3.14 gf to co-op DBACEX"

uuuh, "that feel when you have no cutiepie girlfriend to co-op Darius Burst: Another Chronicle EX".

Did I translate that correctly?

Why hello thar.

Tiny blurb of Darius news from my trip to Tokyo a couple weeks ago. This is happening soon:

Image

Beautiful. Here's hoping they aren't sold out before I'm back in Tokyo.

---

Spent my afternoon playing ACEX and cleared the first normal course BEI. Ancient Barrage is such a total dick, way harder than Thousand Knives for sure. I dropped down to Expert after that and was doing pretty well, but I've hit a road block with Phantom Castle. Once you break the outer armor the puffer-fish will begin rapidly sweeping the screen and letting off tons of red curvy lasers that sort of track you. No matter what I do I can't avoid being hit by all of them, even if I try to keep moving. Anyone who has done it out there that can give me some tips. My approach to dodging them is apparently completely wrong.

I've been back at the arcade the last two days for more Dariusburst. The Great Thing route is nnnrrrgh! I manage to get to him every time but the battle is eternal, I still haven't beaten him yet... but I will.

I'm going to head over in an hour and give it another shot. If I can finish the GT route I'll probably be happy to consider the game done and dusted.

I was just up in the city playing on Monday too actually, but still failing hard at Phantom Castle's curvy lasers. It's a major roadblock for me. That GT fight is absolutely incredible, even in the PSP version. The length and pumping music just makes it feel that much more epic. I'd go so far to call it my favorite fight in any shmup I've ever played. But I've never managed to clear it in the standard course, only challenge mode.

GT is the very bottom course in Original Mode right? Is your Burst AC or ACEX? EX has an entirely new set of courses, making Original only about half of the game. The EX courses are beyond extreme difficulty, there's some really crazy stuff to contend with. Beyond my current level for sure.
