Arcade perfect home port of Raiden?
Arcade perfect home port of Raiden?
Is there any way of playing arcade perfect/accurate Raiden aside from the actual PCB? MAME has some glitches, Raiden Project has annoying stuff like checkpoints, and Jaguar version is more of a competent remake/recode IIRC. FM Towns port?

Re: Arcade perfect home port of Raiden?
If memory serves the checkpoint thing in Project varies depending on which region's release you're playing...in some cases the checkpoints can be turned off and in others they're always on. I seem to remember hearing something along those lines...anyone else have the same recollection?
Re: Arcade perfect home port of Raiden?
I have the import version of Raiden Project, I'd check the settings but I'm not at home right now and it's been awhile since I've dug out of my library and played it. Been playing it a lot lately on a friend's cab.
Re: Arcade perfect home port of Raiden?
I own the NA longbox Raiden Project, and Raiden has no checkpoints whatsoever in it. I guess it's a default thing, I didn't tinker with options when I played it.
TATEing Raiden Project requires a Gameshark though, mine is underway YAY!

Re: Arcade perfect home port of Raiden?
There is an option in (NA) Project to turn checkpoints on or off.
(edit)
Ok it's under options -> Miscellaneous -> Start back mode.
Turn that On to enable checkpoints.

Hmmmm, I guess the internet lied to me about the checkpoints then.

Is there a way to disable checkpoints in the JP version?
Also, the music sounds slightly different between MAME and Raiden Project... Project is a little slower, has a little less umph. Kinda disappointing as that first stage theme is one of my favorites.

Re: Arcade perfect home port of Raiden?
The music was apparently "recreated" and streamed from the CD for Raiden Project, as opposed to being emulated or line-in recorded. I noticed the difference myself, but it's really noticeable in I more so than II.
Re: Arcade perfect home port of Raiden?
What? No, it's not streamed. In Raiden Project, both games' soundtracks ("Original" and Arranged) are synthesized on the Playstation's SPU. Which is radically different sound hardware from what's used on the arcade boards for either game, and why they sound so different from each other.BPzeBanshee wrote:The music was apparently "recreated" and streamed from the CD for Raiden Project, as opposed to being emulated or line-in recorded. Ah, that makes sense. Thanks for clearing that up, I thought it was streamed. Getting confused with some of PC Engine Fan's older posts or something I guess. :SnZero wrote:What? Gotta say though, for recreations synthed on different hardware they certainly got it close. I barely noticed the difference in Raiden II.
Re: Arcade perfect home port of Raiden?
I don't think so. Also check the end of this topic, it was discussed there as well and nobody had a solution.Edmond Dantes wrote:Is there a way to disable checkpoints in the JP version?

Re: Arcade perfect home port of Raiden?
Sorry to bump this old topic. I popped in my import copy of Raiden Project tonight and am having fun but I can't stand the checkpoints any longer so I'm seriously mulling just buying the U.S. version now. Is it true I have to get a Gameshark though if I want to enable TATE on the NA disc?

Re: Arcade perfect home port of Raiden?
You can TATE the USA version, but the controls are adjusted to be as if you were playing a horizontal game, and there is no way to remap the controls without a cheat device or modified controller.

Thanks for the clarification, good to know.Seahawk wrote:You can TATE the USA version, but the controls are adjusted to be as if you were playing a horizontal game, and there is no way to remap the controls without a cheat device or modified controller.
Also noticed that when you die, if you got the fairy item before, she'll come back to give you some of your powerups when you return, does this happen in the NA version too even after disabling "Startback mode"?
Edit: Also, never owned a PSX Gameshark before, is it just a memory card peripheral or will it not work without a disc? Just wondering because ones I'm seeing on eBay are either loose or come with a CD.
Edit: Just started playing Raiden II and it doesn't start you back after you die at all, odd they would do that for the first game on the collection but not the second.
Re: Arcade perfect home port of Raiden?
Yes, this occurs for both Raiden I & II.Dylan1CC wrote:Also noticed that when you die, if you got the fairy item before, she'll come back to give you some of your powerups when you return, does this happen in the NA version too even after disabling "Startback mode"?
It depends on your model of PS1.Dylan1CC wrote:Edit: Also, never owned a PSX Gameshark before, is it just a memory card peripheral or will it not work without a disc? Just wondering because ones I'm seeing on eBay are either loose or come with a CD.
Some cheat devices hook onto the parallel port. Others are a boot CD which have codes stored on the memory card.
I just tested on my copy, checkpoints are implemented on both games if you enable the setting in "Miscellaneous".Dylan1CC wrote:Edit: Just started playing Raiden II and it doesn't start you back after you die at all, odd they would do that for the first game on the collection but not the second.
Re: Arcade perfect home port of Raiden?
Thanks again for the info. Once I'm living somewhere with more space I'm just going to buy a Raiden 1 PCB for my Supergun so I can finally play the real deal any time I want.Seahawk wrote:Yes, this occurs for both Raiden I & II.Dylan1CC wrote:Also noticed that when you die, if you got the fairy item before, she'll come back to give you some of your powerups when you return, does this happen in the NA version too even after disabling "Startback mode"?

Re: Arcade perfect home port of Raiden?
Are you seeing this on the U.S. version or somewhere in the import version's settings? Still don't get why Raiden II doesn't have the checkpoint issue. Whoever did this collection made some odd choices.I just tested on my copy, checkpoints are implemented on both games if you enable the setting in "Miscellaneous".
Re: Arcade perfect home port of Raiden?
Mine is a USA version, the ID on the disk is SCUS_944.02;1
Re: Arcade perfect home port of Raiden?
Japanese Raiden 1 is supposed to have checkpoints.

Don't forget that home ports are locked to 60hz refresh rather than the original 57hz or whatever it is, meaning the home port is slightly faster.
Re: Arcade perfect home port of Raiden?
I've wondered if the console could be under-clocked in some way to fix this. It should still display in RGB if you could. Anyone have any ideas?casualcoder wrote:Don't forget that home ports are locked to 60hz refresh rather than the original 57hz or whatever it is, meaning the home port is slightly faster.

Re: Arcade perfect home port of Raiden?
Apologize for the lack of comprehension here. If you have a Japanese PS2, what is the best Raiden (I/II/DX/etc.) experience for the system? Meaning, is there a port with perfect tate & no checkpoints?
Re: Arcade perfect home port of Raiden?
Not dwelling into the confusion that always comes with this, I say this from my own experience:amdiggywhut wrote:is there a port with perfect tate & no checkpoints?
The Raiden Project for the US/NTSC PS1 has Raiden and Raiden II without checkpoints and real TATE. If it's perfect I don't know, but it looked bloody good on my TV.
However, real TATE can only be achieved by means of a Game Shark device.
Re: Arcade perfect home port of Raiden?
As was already clarified in this thread, enabling tate in the US version of Raiden Project with a cheating device will only adjust the display, not the controls. The latter will still be oriented as if the game was letterboxed.

Re: Arcade perfect home port of Raiden?
No, you can actually get full tate with a Gameshark code. I did it long ago and kept the save file on a PS1 memory card, so I can play my US copy anytime with complete TATE, correct controls and all. Only problem is that if I ever adjust the display settings again and save them, it will overwrite it and I'll need to use the Gameshark again to get it back.Pretas wrote:As was already clarified in this thread, enabling tate in the US version of Raiden Project with a cheating device will only adjust the display, not the controls. I can assure you get real tate, bro. Controls included.Pretas wrote:As was already clarified in this thread, enabling tate in the US version of Raiden Project with a cheating device will only adjust the display, not the controls. The latter will still be oriented as if the game was letterboxed.

Raiden DX has perfect Tate with no weird control problems and no checkpoints. It also makes Raiden II irrelevant and obsolete.amdiggywhut wrote:Apologize for the lack of comprehension here. If he doesn't know let's figure out who the publishers are and bugger those dudes. I've seen at least two different names for publisher name now.
