Any recommendations on tate driving games?
Any recommendations on tate driving games?
I've been playing some arcade tate driving games lately - most of which are from the 1980s. Games like Crazy Rally, and Road Fighter. Spy Hunter sort of fits in this category although most enemies come from behind, which I don't enjoy as much.
They are kinda fun in that they practice most of the same reflexes as shmups. Namely, dodging side to side to avoid stuff coming at fast speed from the top of the screen. I much prefer the fast action in these to the isometric 2d driving games that were in the 90s, stuff like Neo Driftout and World Rally, and the chase view driving games like original Outrun are also a different style altogether imo.
Does anyone have any recommendations in this "genre" of arcade games? I can't say I'm very experienced or knowledgeable of other arcade titles along these lines.
Here is a video of crazy rally for illustration purposes.

Someone's got some PC TrackMania to work in tate, that was not very practical, but there you go.
F-Zero GX in split-screen (at least for 2 players) can be play on vertical halves, which - on a 4:3 display - isn't very practical either.

Come to think of it, Kororinpa and Kuru Kuru Kururin should work in tate.

I'm a big fan of the original 1979 Monaco GP. It's not emulateable, but there's a decent version on the Saturn and a similar game on C64 called LeMans. There's also the PC game Oldie GP 2, which is in that style.
You might also try the F1 Circus series-- it's a bit of track memorization and insane reflexes needed, but damn is it ever intense. I think it's underrated. Namco also has one called World Grand Prix or something (also on PC Engine). And, of course, Cyber Spin on SNES.

Looking at videos, it looks like the JP version, based on the Cyber Formula anime is the one to go with. US version seems to be missing features. I only saw New Game and Password under options for the US cyber spin, but it looks like the JP version has more modes.louisg wrote:And, of course, Cyber Spin on SNES.

Thought I'd bump this. Oldies GP and especially New Oldies GP are pretty sick. Direct clones of ye old Monaco GP, a 1979/1980 game that feels more substantial than 1984's Road Fighter sometimes. The SG-1000 version of Monaco GP is also pretty fun, though it's a somewhat different game with the jump mechanic.
You actually can simulate most of Monaco GP with HBMAME. Haven't tried it, but I'm sure it's better than that poor "remake" (that requires the roms anyway) floating around.
Road Fighter itself is a good choice. There's also Toaplan's Dash Yarou (bikes!), that one's nice. The first Famicom Grand Prix is a little like Micro Machines, kinda funny to play that and then play Capcom's F-1 Dream right after.
Radical Radial would be GREAT for this, but it's not a vertical monitor game.
Somewhat related are games like super-old Sprint, Super Sprint, and Badlands.

This is serious. I just damaged a digital camera that wasn't even mine for the sake of taking this picture; that's why it'd ended up taken with a cel phone.

What I did to play OutRun 2006 on PC in tate: rotated screen orientation in the nVidia drivers display settings, chose a resolution higher than 640x480 in the game's video settings, enjoyed.
3D graphics look effectively cropped in game (more skybox, less vistas), but it's playable and not glitchy. My guess why 480x640 is not an option would be that HUD requires at least 640 horizontal resolution.
That camera is a trooper and I'll have it tended.
On a side note, I tried this trick with Mashed: Fully Loaded before, but the screen proportions were wrong.

aka Bump 'n' Jump! The NES Bump 'n' Jump is interesting, as well. It's a sequel of sorts and was called Buggy Popper in Japan. Monaco GP for the SG-1000 is also good stuff and adds a jump.glitch wrote:burning (burnin') rubber!
