Looking for General Info on Sticks and Parts

Post by Mako »

Hi guys!
This is my first post to the forum, so hopefully it's in the right place. I'm brand new to the shmup community and was looking for some friendly advice and nudge in the right direction. All my shmups are currently on Xbox 360 (will hopefully be getting some for PC too) and i've only used the standard hand held controller. I want to try using an arcade stick, but have read a lot of conflicting info. From what I've read, most players buy a set-up and mod to preference, but because there's such a wide assortment of parts and manufactures, I don't even know where to start! Heck, I don't even know the lingo yet! -___- Is there a guide I can read the tells me the basics? Like what gates and restricters are, the different styles of sticks, the preferred set-ups and parts for various genres (fighting games vs. shmups, etc.) and general terminology (like "throw" and how it pertains to a shmup.)
I've read the Seimitsu LS-56 is a really popular stick, but I don't have the background knowledge to understand why! O_O
This isn't so much a "what should I buy for my first stick" thread, but trying to understand the hardware associated with shmups and how I can use it!

Hopefully that all makes sense! I'd love to purchase an arcade stick set-up, but I think it's mandatory to understand what I'm buying and why first. :)

Thanks!

Pretty much the bible.

It is starting to get a bit out of date, as there are some newer products on the market that are not mentioned, but it will definitely give you a very good foundation.

Kowal also has an excellent site, but not all of it has been translated yet.

To add a question, do various shmup games require more buttons than others? I've seen 6 and 8 button panels, but assume the larger amount of button is directed toward fighting games. Are there any shmups that use more than 6 buttons?
