Re: It's been a while since I blew up a console...
I did this silly thing myself recently (only because the seller reassured me it was voltage converted already....which was not the case) and the HK capacitor I got off ebay is still working fine. Best fix is probably to get a 220-240v rated psu board from another pal console and use that instead of buying a step down.

Worth noting - the varistor is rated for the power supply input voltage, JP part in a PAL unit = bang and probably vice versa.

Went to the electronics market and found the following on first sight:
1x varistor (exploded thing) - 07 DNR 7D221K
It's a touch larger in diameter, but the rating is 221K. As this is China it's not so easy to source something with Japanese ratings (less easy than I thought) but that's based on walking into the local market. Online is of course an option, but then I have to buy 100 of each object.
For reference, the varistor costs 3 Jiao, and fuses were 1 Jiao, although again, because China, they didn't have the specific 125V fuse I needed - only 120V.
Equivalent money is about 0.04 of a penny. If I get this thing running again, would be the cheapest repair job I've ever had.

the fuse should be fine, 5 volts isnt going to change the world. however i am not sure about the varistor rating thing.Skykid wrote: For reference, the varistor costs 3 Jiao, and fuses were 1 Jiao, although again, because China, they didn't have the specific 125V fuse I needed - only 120V.

What? Surely there's some option like a Mouser or Digikey, one of which does allow purchasing in a quantity of 1. There's also eBay, as well - surely buying a single varistor from eBay shouldn't be a huge problem (despite what I said about counterfeits earlier).Skykid wrote:Online is of course an option, but then I have to buy 100 of each object.

Re: It's been a while since I blew up a console...
I bet it smells of burnt plastic in there. I've seen my fair share of burnt out consoles.
Your right about one thing. If you have lots of different voltage consoles it gets confusing. I haven't touched my stuff in a while and I can't remember what stuff is 110 or 220.. Not to mention I have a haul of scart leads which some of them are JP config and some are UK. When I get in the attic its going to be fun trying stuff out thats for sure..
Good luck with your saga.

Check the labels...unless you did the PSU swap there's no guesswork required.neorichieb1971 wrote:When I get in the attic its going to be fun trying stuff out thats for sure..

But getting non-Chinese sites and sellers to ship to China is a battle. There's no domestic company here that will ship 1 fuse, it's just ridiculously cheap.Ed Oscuro wrote:What? Are you 100% sure about this? The Varistor should be fine, the rating is the same, it's just the size that's slightly bigger - but the electronic repair chap suggested not going with an underpowered fuse in the event it ever gets another surge (which tbh, is kind of unlikely, but you never know.)nasty_wolverine wrote:the fuse should be fine, 5 volts isnt going to change the world. however i am not sure about the varistor rating thing.Skykid wrote: For reference, the varistor costs 3 Jiao, and fuses were 1 Jiao, although again, because China, they didn't have the specific 125V fuse I needed - only 120V.

Re: It's been a while since I blew up a console...
Yeah, 5volts difference wouldnt kill the thing, it will just blow the fuse like last time if there is a surge. However, if you check the fuse, it will also be rated for amps, thats how much power can safely be put into the console without blowing the fuse. so if you get the correct amp rated 120v fuse, everything will be peachy.Skykid wrote:Are you 100% sure about this? Over here in India, we should ideally have 220volts on the walls, but it varies from anywhere between 180-250 volts. I have used fuses rated for 220 volt in tv's and dvd players and never have them blow up.

I'm not worried so much about the fuse or even the varistor.Skykid wrote:But getting non-Chinese sites and sellers to ship to China is a battle. Re: It's been a while since I blew up a console...
^ Well, I've been doubly informed by two parties (Sys11 being first) that the striped transistor is fine.
The fuse and varistor are meant to pop, and the varistor has left a little charcoal on the transistor. Although sys11 said I might as well replace it, it's been recommended as not really necessary.
Hoping to have this going again soon.

Ah, nevermind what I wrote - I was still thinking the varistor was something else.

She lives!
Back on Guardian Force as of this evening. Replaced the varistor, but the fuse is the wrong one, temporarily until I can get a proper replacement. Better make sure to remember the stepdown from now on or next time it'll cook.
Didn't replace the transistor in the end. Speculation about that was spot on.

The striped thing is a resistor, i got confused for a while there. As i said before, as long as the amps value (1.6 from the picture) matches and the volts are really close (120 against 125), you dont really need to worry about it. Enjoy your saturn, I am glad you didnt have to dump it. (I have a strange relationship with electronics, hate to see repairable things being thrown out)Skykid wrote:She lives!

Don't worry, I would never have actually thrown it away, merely an exaggeration alluding to its possible worthlessness aftet the overload! I've moved on gaming objects for spares or repairs in the past.nasty_wolverine wrote:The striped thing is a resistor, i got confused for a while there. And yes, resistor! Whoops, slip of the keyz.

Good news but...
Can resistors even break? Even one that looks burnt out (from an explosion from a nearby component) is going to work. Don't think I've ever seen a dead resistor in my life.
But yeah replace that fuse for a properly rated one lest you get a power surge.

Yeah they can break, they tend to go open, but more often it's just corrosion.Retro Access wrote:Good news but...

Yeah I've seen corrosion but usually that's caused by a leaking capacitor somewhere nearby and yep it's killed the resistor. I've not seen one that's died on its own though.system11 wrote:Yeah they can break, they tend to go open, but more often it's just corrosion.Retro Access wrote:Good news but...
