Haukr - Small Vertical Scroller

Post by InvisibleMan »

Uh, first off I want to apologize for not posting here nearly enough. But yes, I finally released a SHMUP my brother and I have been working on, so I wanted to post it here! :D

Play Haukr

Summary
Haukr is a top-down vertical scrolling shoot 'em up, designed in a style similar to the arcade games I remember from when I was a kid. My brother and I started work on this game last year because we wanted to put together a small, fun game. While games like this do exist, there do not seem to be many in this exact genre and style. Being fans of the genre, we decided to add our own game to the list :) We hope you enjoy playing it as much as we enjoyed making it!

Controls
Use the arrow keys to fly around the screen. Tap the space bar to fire your warplane's weapons.

Objective
Destroy all enemies in your path! Collect gold coins to gain additional lives, and large blue coins to upgrade your warplane's weapons. If you manage to reach the end, the game will return you to the main menu.

I can see the specific type of shooter you were going for with the look and feel of the game, those Xevious-era shmups. It's neat to see something that's just a solid, straightforward shooter. It took me a minute to get used to the tiny sprites, but I really like the graphics and sound effects and just the general feel of the game.

I think a lot of people will hate that you can't just hold the fire button, but I like the snappy feel of firing a shot, so I'm okay with it.

I REALLY want to play this, but I won't as long as you've got space as fire button and no autofire.
Yeah, you can call me Mr Harsh.

If you add auto-fire, I hope you'll consider making it optional. The more I play this the more I really like how it feels to fire your weapon.

I hope you'll continue to make action games, shmups or otherwise. You and your bro have a good feel for it.

Thank you very much for the feedback! It's much appreciated :) Also, sorry for taking so long to respond!

Regarding auto-fire: It was an intentional design decision to leave this out, as it supports the style we are going for. However, the fire key will be moved to the more easily pressed "Z" key and I will investigate the code to make sure that there is a limit to how fast you can fire your weapons :)

I've compiled a list of changes, based on feedback I've received, and I'll be working on them as soon as possible! I created a Trello board to manage the task list, but I'll post it in here as well:
  • Double the Game's Dimensions
  • Recolor your Warplane Blue
  • Change Attack Key to Z
  • Add "Press Z" Message to Game Over Screen
  • Plane-to-Plane Collision
  • Press Escape to Return to the Menu
  • Add a Version Number to the Menu
  • Add Music Credits

Great! :D

Now when you've responded to that, here's a list of what needs to be fixed as well:
* Player ship inertia. Remove.
* Enemy behavior. All enemies comes from the top and goes straight down with a constant speed until exiting at the bottom.
* Killed by invisble enemies. Cannons fire from under the clouds.

This topic is a good read:

I just love the graphics! Please try to make the best of it.

Hum, lack of autofire also killed it for me. Why not mapping autofire to a button, and fire to another ?

I played this for a little bit a few days back. It's fun, I like it! Although, I agree -- no autofire kinda bummed me out a little. Spacebar doesn't bother me much, although I'm more used to Z key. :P Oh right, the inertia thing did annoy me a little but I got used to it.

Well done, the game is fun. But to set up spacebar like shot key turns the game UNPLAYABLE for BRAZILIAN KEYBOARDS, all games that use SPACEBAR (at least for brazilian keyboards) cause a weird bug: when press spacebar and arrows, at same time, keyboard stay BLOCKED!

Starting of this results, most of developers around the world (and all brazilian developers) agreed to use Z and X, for shots and bombs. A rapid fire is welcome!

Ah, please, set up the game for fullscreen, or some biggest resolution!

(sorry by english mistakes) :)
