Looking for specific Japanese Win95 doujin + recommendations

Post by LEGENOARYNINLIA »

I asked for Win95 shmups here: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=44285 but now I'm after a specific game I just remembered.

Basically it's very much inspired by Symphony Of The Night. You control this old fellow in a robe who wields a staff. That's all I can say to describe it. Anyone remember what it was called? I recall playing it over 10 years ago. (It's not Vampire Blaze)

Any other Win95 doujin recommendations are welcome as well. My setup has a 150Mhz Pentium processor and 80MB RAM, just to give you an indication of what I can run.

I'm also interested in other Asian PC games, if you have some recommendations for those. Win95 or DOS, either will do.

Thanks!

I have the Magical Chase Win 95 port. It's not doujin, but it's a port of a cool game. I never got it running, however... Never figured the virtual machine thing out properly.

If you're interested I can find a way to get it to you. I'd be intersted to hear if there are any differences from the PCE version.

Oooh, I remember playing that one too. Must've been a ripped version. Thanks for the recommendation!

I'd be interested to see those sprites and backgrounds side-by-side with Genocide (hero sprites) and Mad Stalker (backgrounds). The hovering orb thing looks pretty much like it's ripped straight from Genocide's Betty, too. Not sure I should say it "looks interesting," but might be worth checking out.

That would be Return of Egypt.
My 1CCs so I can find the list easier myself

Mechanical Brain Survival is pretty cool. It's for Win98, recommends a 486x100mhz. Still plays fine on my old XP machine, haven't tried it on anything newer yet. It's an upgraded port of the ancient MSX Turbo-R game, which is still undumped AFAIK.

Zyclunt was clearly heavily inspired by the X68000 "classic" Genocide, except they made an actual playable game out of it.

Would you happen to know where to find it? Google isn't very cooperative these days.

Zyclunt was also released in US as Blade Warrior, surprisingly enough.

Not Japanese, but I just couldn't get my PC to display the picture in Zombie Wars (2D run & gun sidescroller), a 1996 game. Looks interesting (about as unusual for its time and platform as Gunners Heaven).

I just gave it a shot last week and I deleted it after 15 mins of playing it. Have you tried Alien Carnage?

Nope, it'd be reasonable to swap my current graphics card for Radeon 8500 before I get serious about trying out some of these oldies...
I read Capcom released Vulgus as freeware for Windows.

I asked because Zombie Wars is the not-as-fun-as-the-original-game-was-sequel to Alien Carnage.

Off-topic, but could the original Halloween Harry (1985!!!) be the first sorta-run & gun released? Not a strictly defined genre, so maybe thrust & collect & gun? (I consider Baraduke a shmup, if unorthodox one.)
What do you know, Makaimura and Green Beret came out in 1985 too.

Sorry for necro-posting, but mind if I can see if I can get the PC version of Magical Chase working?

Dude, here necro-posting means dredging up threads from before 2009...only in Shmups Chat and Off-Topic, though.

Not a doujin but I heard there's a Windows 95 port of the original Nectaris (also known Military Madness in the West), Hudson Soft released it for free too if I recall.

I looked this up. The PC version of Nectaris was ported by a German studio known as Sunflowers Interactive, and seems to have been released on floppy in Europe only in 1995. Strange.

He's not talking about the Sunflowers port, which is excellent and worth playing on its own (there are a lot of new things).

There was a Hudson port of Nectaris to Win95/98 released for free, I think it had to do with some map creation contest.

Whole bunch of older japanese doujins of various types to be had, including shmups. I highly recommend Die Slave and xSynergy Gate, both are fantastic 3D shmups, you'll probably find some other doujins to interest you if you browse.
