SCPH 7500 PS2 and PS1 Arkanoid R2000 .
Adding more trival junk for future generations.
Not seen this mentioned before but Arkanoid R2000 has a couple problems on a 7500 PS2.
Firstly the ball movement is much slower than normal and an additional problem occurs if using a Namco Volume Controller SLPH 00015 instead of a pad.
If the Namco controller is connected then the top of the screen glitches in gameplay.
None of these problems happen with the earlier release of Arkanoid Returns.

Interesting. Thanks for pointing this out. I think there is a PS2 compatibility thread somewhere on this forum.
Am I correct in thinking the only difference between the two PS Arkanoid games is the addition of Volume Controller support in R2000?

The Volume controller is supported by both games.
R2000 has more levels a further 150 I read somewhere on the net, plus the video promo for Puzzle Bobble 2 - RayStorm and Psychic Force is missing on R2000.

I live for this stuff!
I always keep a real PS1 handy but it's good to know what's up with PS2 BC.

Nice! Didn't realize there was also a PS1 Namco controller for paddle games. How rare is this bad boy? Couldn't pull up anything on eBay.

This is perhaps the 2nd time I've read of/met someone who knows well of the Arkanoid titles on PlayStation. It was difficult finding information on the games back in the mid -2000's. At that time I went with R2000 because it was a later release and has the insignia for the Volume controller on the rear insert iirc (couldn't find a current image to confirm)pcb_revival wrote:The Volume controller is supported by both games.

Over winter break just a few years ago I played through R2000, I do seem to remember there being 150 levels total.
I paused the game from time to time and left it for the next day (considering I was too far into it and was unsure of save/continue capability). It was often very boring and I wondered if I was missing some secret technique to exact more ball control.
The Hello Kitty Block Kuzushi game as well as the version from Island Creations are much more fun imo.
They don't seem to be common, and it took me a few years to buy one at a decent price ~$65 for the Namco Museum Vol.2 Special Box, in 2004)drauch wrote:Nice! Didn't realize there was also a PS1 Namco controller for paddle games. How rare is this bad boy? Couldn't pull up anything on eBay.
In just the past few months I've seen a couple instances of loose Volume controller for auction but not identified properly in the listing, and they went for $25+ iirc
Back in '09 I picked up a 2nd one boxed for $15. There is also a color variant for Taito's Puchi Carat, and a "Special Pack" box set for Block Kids DX. Keep your eyes out on eBay and you'll get one reasonably cheap. ...it's not like there's a feverish market for ball and paddle games

@Koa Zo
There is a level select for the levels that you have progressed to and I assume if you set autosave to ON then the opened levels will again be accessable next day play.
Level Select - You need to play once so that the continue option is shown next play then highlight continue at the title screen and press X + O and all the levels you have cleared thus far will be selectable.
As far as I can tell the Volume controller is available in three options the Namco grey contruct and the Puchi Carat Edition which is either Blue base with Green buttons or Green base and Blue buttons - both types are shown in Google images or someone has photo shoped the Green base model.
The Blockids Special Edition contains the Namco version.

Extremely meticulous compatibility guide of ALL PSX games played on PS2 (ALL models) - now that would be something else. Nerdporn.Koa Zo wrote:I think there is a PS2 compatibility thread somewhere on this forum.

Cool, thanks! I'll keep my eye out, then. I've yet to snag any of these JP exclusives yet, so now I've got even more of an incentive.Koa Zo wrote:They don't seem to be common, and it took me a few years to buy one at a decent price ~$65 for the Namco Museum Vol.2 Special Box, in 2004)

So how many games work with the Volume Controller? I bought two very cheap years ago and I have Aroanoid Returns and Puchi Carat but I've never heard of Block Kids DX before.

Block Kuzushi: Deden no Gyakushuu by Island Creation is another compatible game.
pcb_revival thanks for the tips for continue and level select in Arkanoid R2000!

Thanks, never heard of those games, would be interesting to try them out.
I guess like the Volume Controller they will be hard to find (but probably not very expensive too).
