27" displays are usually PC monitors and picking one with a rotatable stand is easy. 32" on the other hand are usually TVs and those never come with rotatable stands by default. BenQ's upcoming 32" 1440p monitor being the exception.
The Asus Asus VN279QLB would be my choice for a 27" VA panel with rotatable stand.

+ for the Asus.
Another good VA is the Iiyama XB2783HSU-B1, but it lacks proper aspect ratio control (might be important to some).
On the IPS side the Samsung S27D590P seems to stand at the top, but no rotating stand nor VESA mount...
But yes the Asus VN279QLB is still the best shmups-friendly 1080p60hz monitor around.
Reported potential issues are a quiet high pitched noise, and bad factory colour calibration.
The latter is common to most brands though, you never know what you'll get unless you purchase a high-end model with calibration certification.
The usual nVidia colour bug is there (PC use) but it's fixable thanks to a little app to install (many people still return their monitor because they are not aware of that).
I know a guy who bought one for shmupping, the unit he received was flawless and he's still very happy with it.
Just buy from a retailer with good return & exchange policies.

I would go IPS since VA panels suffer from head on gamma shift (black crush). I'm very happy with my LG 27EA63V (has VESA mount) plus Monoprice stand (~$21). DVI, HDMI, VGA inputs, and audio output (no built-in speakers though). 10ms input lag as tested by http://www.displaylag.com/display-database/

Personally I would go for a 23" Dell, their recent IPS panels have very low input lag, even better than my Mitsubishi or Eizo which advertises low input lag as a feature.
Some are also compatible with 15KHz and 24KHz although that's a niche feature.

The Dells I looked at were all glass, which made them a no-go for me (glare/reflection).

There are only a few Dells with glass up front, e.g. the S series. I recently got two U2414 displays and they're quite alright (although they have pretty poor viewing angles compared to my older Nec H-IPS panels).

Yeah sorry, I was referring to the S series which were the only low lag Dells available when I was in the market.

Not all VA monitors suffer from gamma shift/black crush, actually most are okay, and the popular ones (Samsung S27C750P, Asus VN279QLB, the many recent BenQs) certainly don't crush if set up correctly.airs wrote:I would go IPS since VA panels suffer from head on gamma shift (black crush). IPS panels allow more natural colors and a bit faster pixel transitions, but their blacks and contrast ratio are horrible (for most).
The LG 27EA63V is a good IPS monitor but it lacks flicker-free backlighting (an essential feature to some users).

True, IPS monitors have their issues as well. The glow certainly can be bothersome for some people/applications. The Iiyama XB2783HSU-B1 isn't available in North America but it looks quite nice.

I play on a Dell U2410 and the stand is solid and rotatable.
