What is the future of shmups on new gen consoles?
What is the future of shmups on new gen consoles?
So Xbox 360 hoovered up more than 10 years of Cave output across its lifespan, and now there are 2 years or so left of support for it. The Shooting Collection is out soon, and very little remains of the serious Shmup canon to convert. Cave have started concentrating on mobile platforms with no balance, and XBone and PS4 are starting to make their way. Not to mention Steam...
What is the future of shmups on the new gen of consoles? Progear? 8ing/Raizing arcade collection? Donpachi and Dodonpachi HD remix (with overscan options)?
Is the future bright?!

Maybe the next re-re-release of cave Shooting Collection for Xbox One (now with kuro).
I prefer a PC-based release of crimzon clover, but I also hope it makes it way to ps2 or xbox one

- Very few or no STGs released at retail
- Weaker presence from Japanese devs, stronger presence from Western indie studios
- Most next-gen STGs will be modern reimaginings of Defender or Asteroids with abstract graphics and/or excessive particle effects, such as Resogun and Galak-Z

I am with Pretas and I'll add that everything that we're gonna see in the near future are Doujins, and most of them by what is called Indies. I expect a lot of this stuff.
But I wouldn't discard companies like Moss, G-Rev and few remaining launching bit tidbits in digital format. It is a shame cause if the future is like Resogun I'll be disappointed I haven't liked it so much.

Re: What is the future of shmups on new gen consoles?
It may be on the 360 or PS3, but I predict that Qute has at least one major STG release left in them, perhaps Ginga Force 2. Eschatos wouldn't lend itself to a sequel anywhere near as well, and it doesn't really have anything that could be improved on.

Yep, Qute stated they are already working on their next game, and it seemed from what was posted here that it'd probably be next gen.
I think G Rev will still pump out a console downloadable. If Treasure is anything to go by though, maybe the "major" STG companies will start moving to PC.
@Pretas I Actually think we'll start seeing a stronger presence of Japanese indie studios on our side of the pond. There have been a few interviews/articles about Japan indies "opening up" to western audiences and even other japan indies. Wasn't ZUN recently thinking about pushing more to the western fanbase? Then with the recent success of a few Japan indies on Kickstarter (La Mulana, ALLTYNEX), and companies like Playism and others bringing games over to steam and such, I think japan indie STGs will gain much more of visibility.
STGs will still be a niche.

Re: What is the future of shmups on new gen consoles?
Japan embraces Steam and all previously region-locked STGs are released to a wider audience. The genre grows in popularity and a new golden age of shmups ensues. Ikeda gets an unlimited budget to develop Mushihimesama 3 and we all bask in its glory.

I still have faith in MOSS that they'll still be around long enough for us to see a next-gen Raiden V.

I really hope That next Qute project to be released on current gen, 360 by the way, and we could say goodbye to a glorius shmup era since the mid 90's
Re: What is the future of shmups on new gen consoles?
ib4 era ends, now there can be another division of shmup classification, what should it be called though? What will we call those who discovered shmups after the era ends? Will this create a divide between shmup gamers?Phellan Wolf wrote:I really hope That next Qute project to be released on current gen, 360 by the way, and we could say goodbye to a glorius shmup era since the mid 90's

If there is a Raiden V, you can be almost certain that it will have bishoujo character designs a la Caladrius.Emo Fox Jet Pilot wrote:I still have faith in MOSS that they'll still be around long enough for us to see a next-gen Raiden V.

While I totally should have googled that before asking, googling gave me like 6 different definitions, and none of them was shmup related (unless he meant "in b4," but that doesn't make sense to me in context).Aleksei wrote:

Actually, inb4 is meant to be read as "in before".
The future is probably indies; flashy, shallow casual shooters from the west, and ugly, but playable CAVE rip-offs from the east.
And Moss, and G Rev. (I would love another Under Defeat. That won't happen.)

Re: What is the future of shmups on new gen consoles?
Nice to read genuine, quality responses
IMO, PC is now an incredibly viable platform and Steam is about to blow it wide open. Will be nice to see developers not contending with stupid manufacturer restrictions like 'we don't want to support 2D games' *coughSonycough*
I can't wait to upgrade my old laptop and get into some Crimzon Clover, and I hope that's not the last of it. Power to the doujins.
Personally I would like to see the next gen of shmups move away from the trend towards ridiculous screen filling antics with shots/explosions/bonus tokens constantly obscuring the game underneath. If the sprite work and backgrounds are beautiful, let people see them properly (except for the bullets, of course)

Re: What is the future of shmups on new gen consoles?
-8ing starts a crowdfunding campaign to bring ports of Battle Garegga, Armed Police Batrider, and Battle Bakraid to XBLA, PSN, and Steam (with a full western release as well)
-The crowdfunding campaign is barely successful, and the games get released.
-The games find unexpected critical acclaim and commercial success in both eastern and western markets, in a way similar to Dark Souls.
-Eighting stops making crap licensed fighting games and begin making new Raizing style shmups with Yagawa as head programmer / director.
-These new shmups are just as successful, and 8ing becomes a major company.
-8ing slowly erodes at EA and Activision's mainstream dominance with their awesome shmups
-8ing opens a new company headquarters on a previously undiscovered large island in the Pacific Ocean.
-8ing declares the island a sovereign nation, which is quickly populated by hardcore shmup fans.
-8ing Island's economy quickly grows due to its output of awesome shmups.
-The 8ing Island government approaches two brothers famous for their engineering feats to commission state-of-the-art military aircrafts. The brothers accept.
-The 8ing Island government uses these aircrafts to start a ruthless campaign of global domination.
-The two brothers use four prototype planes to try and take down the 8ing army themselves through medal chaining and tactical suicide.
-The two brothers succeed, and the 8ing government is destroyed.
-A small European indie team releases a neon-saturated remake of an obscure Commodore 64 asteroids clone on PSN.
-It's praised by game journalists as "a true return to the golden age of arcade shooting games".

The EA logo shows up in the Saturn port for Battle Garegga. Then again, EA was a different company back then, responsible for such awesome games as Mutant Hockey League.cave hermit wrote:Seriously? Hopefully with the increase of doujins on pc, treasure and the nesica version of CC, more shmups come to the pc platform, unhindered by old hardware and unreasonable console requirements.

I think an awesome idea would be something like Capcom Arcade Cabinet, where you get one game for free and can purchase additional games a la carte.
Re: What is the future of shmups on new gen consoles?
It's more likely that Capcom would sell you a "freemium" experience where you had to pay for credits with real money.shmuppyLove wrote:I think an awesome idea would be something like Capcom Arcade Cabinet, where you get one game for free and can purchase additional games a la carte.
