$%^&* Hell Yeah! Contra:SS 1CC

Post by UnscathedFlyingObject »

It took me a while playing this b*** on and off, but I've finally achieved the coveted 1CC, and before anyone asks, I started with the 2 lives default. I died three times total during the course of the game and ended up with an A ranking. It feels quite good; I don't think I'll be able to hit the sack now thinking about getting S ranking.

So what's your fave Contra game? Mine would be Shattered Soldier followed by Contra 3 and Contra Hard Corps.

PS: I tried taking a picture, but my camera betrayed me today :(. No battery.

Congratulations, I was close at the beginning of the year. All 4 of the beginning levels became so easy to me after practicing but I hated how you couldn't practice level 5 so I just gave up.

Heh... i can just make it through the first two areas without dying. After that all hell breaks loose on my ass.

for me it's...

Hard Corps
Shattered Soldier
Super C (arcade) - intense!!!
The Alien Wars
Neo Contra
Contra (arcade)
Legacy of War

For some reason i like Legacy of War. I just do, dammit.

Unfortunatly i never got to play C or Operation C...

I'm yet to 1cc this. I think it's level 5 or 6 I'm stuck at. Haven't played it for almost 1/2 a year. But getting S-rank on those levels is too friggin hard.

I just got this game recently, so I haven't really made a dent. Very impressive stuff though.

I 1CC'd Contra III and Contra HC (the Japanese version though!) on normal. Not sure if I can beat Shin Contra though.

My favorite is Contra HC, with Contra III closely behind. Not such a big fan of the arcade/NES games though.

Is Neo Contra worth getting?

I never really saw why people find SS so difficult. It's certainly hard in general, but it's so boss-oriented and learnable that I find it no more challenging than Contra Spirits. Definitely not one for the "I hate memorization" camp.

It's an absolutely brilliant game, though, and I'm not trying to downplay anybody's achievements here. Let's all give ourselves a pat on the back for S-ranking Shattered Soldier!
Is Neo Contra worth getting?
Aye. It received very little attention from long-standing fans or casual gamers and the gaming press, and is a little bit too easy once you unlock a certain set of weapons, but it's great fun, and has a nice sense of humour to boot. It basically plays like more refined and precise version of the top-down levels seen in Super Contra or Contra III. Don't be put off by the notion of "3D Contra" either; it isn't really a true 3D Contra at all. The environments are constructed in full 3D, certainly, but your only action in the 3rd dimension is locking onto and dispatching a few relatively harmless airborne enemies. I think a lot of people mistake 360 degree movement and aiming for "3D". :P

[/pedant mode]

Unfortunately, you might let it gather dust after a week or two, because you'll quickly conquer everything this game throws at you. Because of that, I can only really recommend it if you find an inexpensive copy.

Hard Corps all the way. I need to play Shattered Soldier some more...

And IMO, the only reason to get Neo Contra is if you always enjoyed the top-down Contra stages and want a more shmuppy experience (since that's what some of the boss bullet patterns resemble). If you're worried about/expecting exploration because it's a 3D game, don't. The game progression is still completely straightforward and more in the vein of classic top-down shooters like Shoot And Rescue. To be honest, I think it's a very easy (moreso even than the original) and boring game.

That's quite an accomplishment. I used to play this one all the time and the best I could do was a 2 life credit with A ranking or higher on all the stages. Would get to the last boss and die on some shrimp looking bullets the boss would chuck up every time.

I think that if you can complete the game on 1 life with a good ranking you get 2 extra stages- one where you fight the helicopter robot and some huge green frog thing. I sure haven't seen 'em though.

My favorite Contras are Hard Corps and Shattered Soldier.

Great job man, that game can be tough as nails even when you do know what's coming. I can beat it, definitely can't 1C or S rank the entire thing though.

You're correct about the extra stages MOSQUITO FIGHTER, if I remember right you basically have to S-rank the whole game.

Neo Contra...eh. That game feels so rushed.

Everyone should at least rent it to experience ANIMAL CONTRA though.

For movie fans, the game is like comparing Conan the Destroyer to Conan the Barbarian.

Man, I still need to try just beating the game...1CCing is amazing.

Favorite Contra? 3, mainly due to some childhood nostalgia. I did play it through a couple months ago, and I will admit -- it is insane on Hard difficulty. I thought I would have gone right through it, but wow...the bullets get crazy fast.

Hard Corp's a real, real close-second though. If I had played both games at the same time, HC would most likely win.

1st Contra:HC
2nd Contra 3

I never experienced these games back inthe day so I have no nostalgia attached to them.

Awesome accomplishment.

I can do all the levels 100% individualy, but stringing that all together in one play is a whole other beast.

Agreed. Animal Contra is probably the single funniest video game moment I've ever come across.

I haven't even gotten an A ranking on a single Shattered Soldier mission, but then, I didn't really put much effort into it. I can beat the first four missions without dying, and I can get 100%, but I can't do both on the same run.

My congratulations on your latest achievement! :D

There is no way I could 1'cc Contra SS. The heavy memorization patterns are totally unbearable for me.

If memory serves right, I think I 1’cc Super C & Contra III when I was young…

You have my respects!

My favourite Contra list would be:

1.Super C (NES)
2.Contra (NES)
3.Super Contra III - Aliens Wars (SNES)
4.Contra Hard Corps (Genesis)
5.Neo Contra (PS-2)
6.Contra - Legacy of War (PS-1)
Saint Dragon - AMIGA - Jaleco 1989

While we're talking about Contra: Shattered Soldier, I thought it would be appopriate to bring this up. Why? Scroll all the way down to trivia and then read the last part. And just because I feel like it, I'll copy and paste *SPOILER WARNING*SPOILER WARNING*

There is a secret ending hidden in the game where the player encounters Sparkster from the Rocket Knight Adventures games for the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. The director of those games is the same person responsible for Shattered Soldier, Nobuya Nakazato

Is this true?

I really loved Contra III on SNES, but found it way too easy (even on hard settings). Considering how bad I suck at most vertical shooters, I always found it weird how many people struggled to 1CC this one.

This explains everything to me about the Sparkster cameo.

You're missing out...it's pretty good, though similar more to the NES Contra games than the arcade games.
