The only thing they've successfully been hiding from all videos so far is what happens when you set the screen size option to minimum. I'm keen to see if this will give you true 1:3 line multiplying (224 lines -> 672 lines) and how the scanlines will look in this mode...

What you mean minimum screen size? Like the actual amount of pixels displayed? So like a gameboy game would look like a tiny box on the screen?

there's a slider in the options menu and I would assume that it let's you adjust the under/overscan.

Should be interesting, so far it looks and sounds good, I'm in the middle of watching the video.

I have to admit, I wasn't really interested in this simply because I have the original systems. However, the idea of using it in a second room as a casual game system as well as using it to backup and copy battery saves to/from carts sounds rather appealing.

The built in multitap is handy too for 4 player bomberman. Use whichever controller you like.

Seems to be talk on their facebook page that price has been raised an additional $30 to $40 dollars from the original $100.

That much is true, though if you preordered at the original 100, they will still honor it.

I had it pre-ordered at one point, but when it was delayed again, I canceled. Oh well. I'll wait for some reviews before I reconsider.

I'm really hoping the wait turns out to be worth it for the Retron 5. I don't know what's been harder for me, the fact that I wasn't able to get a Retron 5 for Christmas or my Birthday, or the fact that I boxed up all my classic consoles just to make room for this all-in-one device. Actually, no. The worst part is buying all those import Super Famicom games and not being able to play them at all.

Towards the end of this video they mention that they "don't like emulation"

What's confusing is that the Retron5 is an emulation machine right?

I don't see why you did that. Everybody knows that the firmware this thing runs on is going to be abused to allow roms to be ran from the SD card.

but remember that this is what Hyperkin probably intended all long. Otherwise they wouldn't have built a SD-cart slot into it.

Would be cool if you could fit all the libraries on the SDCard.

Have you pre ordered Fudoh? Review?

sure, since forever.
Review?
don't know. Not really my type of thing. The main problem being that I imagine most reviews to be rather positive, while I would be looking for a scanline squinting at a pixel in the wrong way somewhere

I would find it interesting, it will be a change from the normal reviews we get.

I wanted the a set of the Parodius and Twinbee games anyway (especially the ones not on a jamma PCB). I mean, I can easily play a Pocky & Rocky rom on my PC now, but I still wanted to own a real cartridge of that because I love that game.

As for the roms thing... yeah, I'm definitely interested to see when someone finds a way to load them from an SD card.

I already consider this product as a success, just by the fact that it made you buy a physical copy of Pocky & Rocky :D

Apparently Hyperkin have announced that the Retron5 isnt compatible with Flash Carts!. Im now thinking of cancelling my preorder, as all my retro collection is backed up on EverDrive Flash Carts.

Someone will most likely make it work from SD Card

The problem is the loader software on the flashcarts and the way the Retron5 works. The cart you insert gets dumped before it gets loaded, so with a flashcart you would dump the loading software, but when you try to run it, it's disconnected from the actual flashcart, so you can't load any roms (if it starts at all without the FPGA or ASIC present).

The flashcarts could easily be (software-) modded to work. Krikzz would just have to enable auto loading of the ROM upon booting instead of booting into the flash cart's menu. The later could be done by holding some button instead. You would still have to use another console to load the Rom to the flash cart's memory though.

of course they will. I give them a month or so.

One thing I don't think modders will be able to get round is having flash carts/cartridges for each system in every slot of the Retron 5 at the same time.

Which is unfortunate as its nice not having to swap cartridges all the time.

don't know. Has this been confirmed ? Maybe the machine asks for which system to boot if multiple carts are detected.

RetroN 5 release updated to April 2014

Post by brownvim »

Iv seen a few videos from the hyperkin staff saying only one cartridge in the system at a time. Otherwise it gets confused.

That's a letdown. Was really hoping that all things considered the menu would let you decide what to use. No real reason that can't be coded...

Yeah I'm sure it's simple to code, that's why I reckon it's a hardware thing that they can't implement.

On the GUI video, when they insert the cartridge, it auto detects what's in and switches to that consoles menu.

Yeah, that is a letdown. Would've been nice to just pick a selection of carts to just leave in so you could swap between then from the menu without having to get up.

It's still one of the ugliest pieces of hardware I've ever seen. The black version looks so much better. The power button seems to be badly engineered. Pressing the buttons on a Famicom / Super Famicom was already part of the fun. A console that gets pushed back when you try to press the power button just seems cheap :(
