Lol it just occurred to me by puzzle shmup I mean it apparently has portal like spatial puzzles and then bullet hell and not the puzzle of figuring out enemy behavior and patterns and then strategizing which I assume is what a puzzle shmup usually is.

I have played and completed the original Velocity.
Not at all a shmup in the traditionnal sense. It is a game about navigation and planning, think of games which have a fast scrolling and you only have to dodge the walls / solid level parts.
It does have some fighting and bullet dodging, but IMHO it is the worst part of the game.
