PS2 max HD size?
heyo,
can anyone here tell me what the max addressable size for ps2 internal HD is via OPL? also, same limit for IDE vs. SATA? my modded network adapter has SATA interface.
danke

Proper 48-bit LBA support will get you 2TB max. But in OPL it's maxed out at 1TB I believe.notabot71 wrote:heyo,

Edit: Oh, almost forgot, OPL has a game limit, 150 games. You'll use that up faster than actual space on the drive.

Re: PS2 max HD size?
got it, thanks. thought there was a limit in software as well but couldn't remember. basically just need hd for games that don't stream well from NAS. which, for me is a few but certainly less than 150.
are there any alternatives to OPL that push past 150? just curious.

If there's a better alternative to OPL, it's news to me. AFAIK, OPL is the tops -- your other option is HD Advance/HD Loader, both of which are light years behind OPL.

Just curious since I did try OPL some years back and was not really impressed, can you write a little more why it is better than HDLoader and the likes? It's a genuine question, not a smart-ass oneKalessinDB wrote:If there's a better alternative to OPL, it's news to me. I think it has better compatibility than HDloader. ToxicOS is supposed to be good also, but you need a specific chip for it to run on.keropi wrote:Just curious since I did try OPL some years back and was not really impressed, can you write a little more why it is better than HDLoader and the likes? One of the big compatibility differences between OPL and HDA/HDL is that OPL can play Kingdom Hearts 2 with the gummi ship segments. Previously you had to either patch them out or have the KH2 disc in the system for it to run without crashing.keropi wrote:Just curious since I did try OPL some years back and was not really impressed, can you write a little more why it is better than HDLoader and the likes? Re: PS2 max HD size?
I see... did try the 0.92 version, it now has embedded GSM support and IGR worked on the one game I tested
TBH I never really bothered since my main PS2 has a DMS4 chip so ToxicOS just loads on it and I never faced any problems (never played Kingdom Hearts though...) , infact I got the DMS4 chip because of ToxicOS.
My 2nd PS2 has a crystal chip, OPL seems a good alternative

can't really speak to comparative differences, but fwiw opl w/ embedded gsm has been an utterly seamless and trouble-free experience for me. that seems to be the general consensus vs. other solutions afaik. the only issues i ever have are occasional titles that won't stream fmv smoothly across the LAN and the odd virtual mc failure. other than those it's been top class.keropi wrote:Just curious since I did try OPL some years back and was not really impressed, can you write a little more why it is better than HDLoader and the likes? Is there a disc image of OPL? I've only found MC versions when I had a quick look.

custom burnt ulaunchelf with opl onboard perhaps. not sure if that would work, just thinking out loud.emphatic wrote:Is there a disc image of OPL? I've only found MC versions when I had a quick look.
hmm...actually, google reports the following:
http://psx-scene.com/forums/f150/%5Bask ... dvd-68097/ see post #3.
seem to recall booting opl from usb stick once or twice as well with good results.
i've never been too bothered running opl or other apps from mc as opl's virtual mc feature plays quite well with my nas for most of my game saves. my real mc is mostly occupied by homebrew.

Re: PS2 max HD size?
interesting stuff about VMC and GSM ofcourse... is there a guide or something that explains the steps needed to setup VMCs and artwork? Is it correct that you need to make an OPL partition on the HDD so these stuff gets stored?

haven't installed hd yet but both are easy and mostly flawless from NAS via LAN.keropi wrote:interesting stuff about VMC and GSM ofcourse... is there a guide or something that explains the steps needed to setup VMCs and artwork? Re: PS2 max HD size?
Worth noting that indexing a lot of games also increases boot times. I wouldn't install stuff you're not going to ever play.
I personally see no need for anything above 500GB.
When you try to play any games from HDD, you'll forget about LAN streaming pretty quickly, even for games that work loading them from HDD is just so much faster.
Also PS2 does not support SATA, your modded network adapter has a converter. To the PS2 your SATA drive is a IDE drive... Except maybe with some lacking features and glitches because those adapters usually aren't the best quality ones.
OPL should have better compatibility than HDLoader, though since they're based on different code there might be games that work in HDLoader and not OPL

Re: PS2 max HD size?
thx for the info here. perhaps what i'll do is use my NAS for archival purposes and just install to hd those which i anticipate playing on a regular.ZellSF wrote:Worth noting that indexing a lot of games also increases boot times. I wouldn't install stuff you're not going to ever play.

def understand your point about 1TB being overkill but it's a new drive just sitting on a shelf collecting dust so might as well.
as for the adapter, would you suggest going stock sony ide if this unit gives me problems?
