The Puzzle Game Thread

Post by CIT »

Is there a site like shmups.com, but for puzzle games? Preferably Puzzle Games from Japan?

I haven't been able to find any site dedicated to them, so I was wondering if it exists.

If it doesn't, then I suppose we can just use this thread to talk about puzzlers in general. Like, what are your favorites?

I like:

- Magical Drop III
- Panel de Pon (a.k.a. Tetris Attack)
- Puyo Puyo Tsuu
- Puyo Puyo Fever
- Puzzle Bobble (Bust-A-Move) Series
and of course: Twinkle Star Sprites

I'm thinking of trying one of the Tetris + Bomblis games next. How are those?

I'm also looking for Zintrick on Neo Geo CD, since I like ADKs TSS so much.

Funny fact: Malc had considered starting a puzzle game review site a long time ago, but never got round to it. ^_-

I have a thing for the less popular puzzlers like Panic Bomberman, Devil Dice and Inteligent Qube.

I'd also like a site like this.

It could also have a special section on multiplayer (puzzle games) more than two player (puzzle) games.

What about Noon and what about that 4 player puyo game for the DC, was that released in Europe? Probably not.

Speaking of multiplayer games, pro evo 5 apparantly works with 2 multitaps, so 8 people can play at once. I'm not into sports games, but lots of you guys probably are given the popularity.....

Anyway puzzle games rule.
Super Puzzle Fighter 2 X Turbo is very cool, but short lived, once you find out how to play, the game engine proves to not be that precise, you win with luck, dropping gems with speed is the key here....

Perhaps we could make sub sections on this site.

Puzzle games
Racing games
Light gun games

FPS games get enough coverage, but shmups.com could cover these genres as well!

If anyone would like to design such a site and get a domain name (they're like 8 bucks a year), I will be happy to host it for you free of charge.

And free of annoying ads.

Okay, I've renamed the thread into something more general.

Oh, too bad it never took off. I would start a site like that, except I can barely turn on my computer, so I'm not even gonna try to get into web design.

Intelligent Qube is absolutely brilliant. I also love the soundtrack.

Has anybody played Puchi Carat? Might be picking that one up.

Among the more obscure puzzle games, one I really dig is Cleopatra Fortune... it's not meant to be played head-to-head, but it's single player mode is excellent.

Puyo Puyo Tsuu, Landmaker and Cleopatra Fortune are my favourites so far. Two small japanese companies called Metro and Mitchell have developed quite a few arcade puzzle games with really good ideas, they're also worth checking out.

EDIT:

I didn't like it, but I've never been a big fan of paddle games. The graphics are boring and the soundtrack is quite insufficient (although it's composed by our beloved Yack).

Anyone tried Heisei Tensnai Bakabon Susume? It came with my Saturn but I'll be fucked if I can understand how it works.

My faveourite puzzlers are any of the Puyo Puyo games. Puyo Pop Fever having the edge at the moment due to the sheer stupidness of it. Always a blast in 2 player, choosing the characters with the most irritating voices.

Are you playing the UK versions of Fever? I heard that most of the UK versions of Fever have had the Japanese voices removed.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Tetris + Bomblis," but Tetris Attack (or Pokemon Puzzle League) is the only non-shmup in my top 5 of all-time favorites.

Bombastic (the follow-up to Devil Dice) is probably my second favorite puzzle game or tied for second with Puyo Puyo.

I've been picking up a few puzzle games for myself lately, when I can find them cheap...I'm considering getting ahold of one of the "Pazurudama" and "Tokkaedama" games on the Saturn, since most impressions I've heard of them are pretty good. I've had the "re-painted" US SNES versions of Puyo Puyo and Panel de Pon forever, but my most recent favorite is probably Magical Drop III...I've also played a little of Money Idol Exchanger, very different...I'd like to try Battle Balls one day if the opportunity ever comes up (too bad it's a rare find).
Seven Force wrote:Has anybody played Puchi Carat? Might be picking that one up.
I believe it got a PAL release, but never came to the US...in any event, it's on one of the Taito Memories Japanese imports on the PS2 (I think it's the second one), so that's how I've played it...an interesting concept, but it's not as "precise" as other puzzlers, so I can't quite put it among my favorites.

Tetris + Bombliss are Japan only Tetris games. There is one for Famicom and one for Super Famicom. The actual games of the games are Tetris 2 + Bombliss and Super Tetris 2 + Bombliss. From what I tried, they are both very good, though I prefer the SNES version. However, Super Bombliss is a more complete package if you just want Bombliss. A GB version of it came to the US under the name "Tetris Blast".

Bombliss/Tetris Blast is a variation of Tetris where the blocks have bombs in them. When you make lines, the bombs go off and destroy the blocks in their range. For small bombs made into a square forms into a big bomb that has a wider range when lines are made. The more lines made at ones, the bigger the bomb blast.

Sokoban, my all time favorite!

Setting up a phpBB-forum, like this one, is dead easy. The design around it might be a bit more work though. If anyone can host it (including php-scripts and mysql-database), I can give a hand setting it up.

Yeah, all the voices are in English. Quite irritating yet funny at the same time because it's so awful.

Anybody had their motivation for puzzlers dashed when they saw how insanely well expert JP players did at them?

Actually, when I first watched that superplay of Tetris, it made me want to play Tetris Worlds :P It was the only Tetris I had available at the time, but it made my friend laugh

Problem when I start on puzzle games--particularly Neopets ones, since they're available for FREE--is I get stuck on them and can't quit playing :? I was pretty hooked on the Reflexive Arcade for a while, too--Jewel Quest and Alchemy and some of those.

If you're really interested in setting up a puzzle games site (complete with forum) I can do the hosting with no problem if you get a domain name.

A puzzle game site sounds great but I'm not interested in running such a site by myself. I could help get it started; setting it up, doing some coding or HTML, and partly maintain it. I'm already running another forum site and I don't have the time run one more by myself.
Apart from you hosting it, me setting it up, we need someone to create graphics and someone do run it/maintain it.

I've sent you a PM.

All right - I've emailed you.

We've already got the triforce of coding and the triforce of hosting, now we just need the triforce of managing...

I noticed Zoo Keeper is coming with Taito Legends; is it any good? Isn't it just a clone of Bejeweled?

Or is that the DS one and the ARC one is a whole different beast?

Oh yeah, Tetris Attack rules. I've talked with the world record holder; he's an awesome guy. Currently goes to Michigan State University, said he's been considering engineering.

He's got a very diverse taste -- on one hand, he likes the arcade games of yesterday, but he also likes newer games like GTA: San Andreas.

I think Devil Dice is a great game, but its lack of popularity doesn't surprise me. Even at the beginner level, the game requires you to quickly imagine how objects will rotate in 3D, and many people are not born with that natural ability. Even though the rules of the game are very simple, basic manuevers require a deeper level of thinking than in Tetris or Dr. Mario. The simplicity of those games makes them much more accessible to beginners and non-gamers. Even if you really suck at Tetris, you can still have fun with it. If you really suck at Devil Dice, it will only frustrate or bore you.

Anyway, I've asked this before, but who here has played both Devil Dice and Bombastic? As somebody who already owns Devil Dice, what incentive would I have to buy Bombastic?

The DS Zookeeper is a bejeweled clone. The Taito Zoo Keeper is a much different game.
