I hadn't been shopping at a mall for almost two years and after going the other day I probably will not go for another 20 (thanks, Amazon). Loud, howling, screeching, demanding (of their parents and to workers who serve them their bloods' juice, aka ice cream), little devils, on leashes being dragged around whilst on their backs or fronts populate an otherwise relatively quite environment. The other major source of noise is the god awful taste in music these store play, essentially making me leave any shop I wander into. Also, people that make eye contact with me think I'm a creep if I smile and say hello....whilst they make and ugly face. I guess thats better than seeing a collection of sheep that would drown if it were raining.
When I read this I thought "What kind of trash town do you live in?!" Then I saw your listed location and everything made sense.

The malls out here where I'm at aren't all that bad, though I rarely go. I tend to hate the parents more than I do the children. The kid is shouting at mom while she's busy gabbering on to her friend about a sale at Walmart or whatever the fuck, and she just turns away and ignores the kid. It makes me want to yell something like "STFU! That isn't some annoying little dog barking at you for no reason, that is your child! Pay attention to them! And while you're at it, go back to school and learn a thing or two, you dumbfuck"

It's definitely a cultural thing with bratty kids. The same kind of disobedience seems very rare out East. I don't mean you never see a crying kid or angry parent, but the level of disrespect is comparatively very little.

I mean, if you let the kids be the boss when they're 3-4 years old, how the fuck are you gonna be able to handle them when they're older? On the other hand, when you see a parent who doesn't seem to look after their kid, it might also be that the kid is having a bad day (teething, a fever etc.) making them impossible to please no matter what. If you're outdoors, well then letting the kid have a tantrum while the parent doesn't do anything might be a stress relief for both parties. I say might, because you don't know what's been going on with that family that day. I see parents though, who stare at their phones while their kids scale walls, play near water etc, and that's fucking horrible. Sometimes when you're in a restaurant and a child is unhappy, screaming like bloody murder, I personally would get my kid out of there ASAP, because I know how fucking annoying this is to the other people in there. Some parents just look at the other customers like "well, this is a family restaurant, deal with it". This is so god damn disrespectful.

I can understand that to a point, but I wasn't even talking about tantrums. I was talking more about kids who want to get their parents attention for any general reason, and they're being ignored for some stupid reason. I get what you're saying about inattentive parents, though. My mom's neighbor has a severely autistic son, and he frequently just waltzes out the front door and they walk out after him. I only spent about two weeks at her house (my mom's that is) but from what she's told me, they can often hear the kid wailing and crying for attention from the inside of the house.

Regarding restaurants, I haven't had an experience like that yet. At least not as an adult. I vaguely recall an incident where as a kid there was this other family that had an annoying kid, but idk.

Yeah. Over there, you get parents who attempt to abandon their children when they get a bad grade in calculus. (from an actual article I read awhile back. I'm not stereotyping here)

^ Really?

What country specifically? Never seen a Chinese parent abandon their family over something that trivial. Here family is life - is everything. It's excessive if I'm honest. Who the fuck wants to live with their in laws?

You know what's ten times worse than that? Making them sit in the corner, without any entertainment, for an entire hour. You know what it's called? A timeout. It's a fascinating concept, to be able to punish children without beating them.
Different generations son, I'm probably almost twice your age. Spanking was not the go-to punishment, it was reserved for only when you were incredibly bad. Time outs were for talking back or not doing what you were told.

As a kid, being made to sit in a corner for an hour is not much of a deterrent, especially for really bad behavior, but a spanking on the other hand is not something you want to happen again.

Imagine a kid stole something from a store and got caught, and the parents made them sit in a corner? Oh damn, better not do that again, that was a boring time sitting in the corner. Come on.

My dad used his belt, and sometimes they would break a switch off a tree in the backyard, which was really nasty.

Mom denies the latter but she's full of it.

My dad never really spanked us, it was usually my mom, and she never used anything but her hand; got a few slaps to the face too, but then again, I was a naughty youth. I had a friend who's mom used a wooden spoon, she did it once when I was there; scared the shit out of me.

Indian kids get hit a lot, and i really mean HIT A LOT. hands, belts, sticks, anything near at hand that can be swung. Do anything that doesnt sit right with your parents.... WHACK!!!

But when i think about it, my parents never hit me for no reason, usually it was either for something i was told to do and i didnt, or something i was told not to and i did. they never really hit me that hard that it would bleed or leave a mark, just enough to scare the shit out of you. But all that was balanced with love and care so i never really resent any of it. Either that or i used to get locked out of the house till I apoligized.

And, tbh i like that old fashioned parenting, behave and everything is sunshine and roses, dont and "Somebody gonna get a hurt real bad...."

edit: they stopped hitting me when i was 16 or something, my dad sat me down and had a talk, that i have grown up enough to be responsible for my own actions. by 18 i was out on my own. but thats really a deviation from the indian way of life. most guys live with there parents for life, and get a job by 25 or later.

I'm not even sure if the efficacy of a good spanking. My parents used to give me a good clip round the ear or the legs but I still grew up as a delinquent little shit. Some people are just naturally contrary.

That doesn't absolve parents of the responsibility to try and discipline their kids though.

Hitting kids was made illegal here in Sweden when I was four or five years old. I know this because my dad threatened to put me across his knees, and I told him that was illegal since the 1st of March. ;) This makes him laugh to this day.

dont technically have to hit. placing a pencil between the index and middle finger (so they are perpendicular) and pressing them together works fine too!!!

It was officially part of public school policy in the States all the way through my education. It never happened to me, but they would drag kids out into the hallway to make an example, and they would spank them with a wooden paddle. Getting paddled was the term we used.

Holy shit, the assholes are still doing it!

Playing a shmup and about to potentially get a new personal best, only for someone to turn the tv on in the room to something incredibly obnoxious and distracting which causes you to fuck up horribly. In this case, the offending show was that godforsaken Alvin and the Chipmunks musical movie.

Maybe I need to wear headphones when I play.

Reminds me of the time when my I went to watch TV, and not even ten seconds later, my dad turns on this blaring loud music in the other room.

Shopping for anything of value, or that you'll have to live with for a long time.. sucks. (re: earlier post about dishwasher-caused fire)

I'm at Home Depot checking on appliances b/c we're going to buy all new stuff for the kitchen.

Me: What is the difference between these 2 GE refrigerators?

Them: They're just 2 different models with different features. -points to one- That one "might" be the top line model but there's another one that might be better than that one, and I think it's called something else.

Me: Ok, thanks.

Firefox displaying some kanji as simplified hanzi. Quite the stuff for this thread: really minor but the inconsistency annoys the hell out of me. Can be a bit of a PITA to completely fix for all sites too.

Mini-hangovers where I drank enough water to compensate, but I'm still a little out-of-it at work in the morning... enough to warrant worry that my superiors will notice, but not enough that they actually do... so far as I can tell.

Also: human bowel movements that share the wretched, stinging smell of the purging of a canine's anal sacs. Only one so far... but one is *enough*. Honestly.

Try this, if a partition recovery tool doesn't work: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk
I think you should be able to recover a partition unless you overwrite it (i.e., format it), though. Of course even if you do that, the actual files will remain on disk and should be more or less recoverable with TestDisk.

Tried, refused to detect the partition, something about cylinders and tracks not matching the disk. tried bunch of other software, didnot work. so finally i quick formatted the partition, then used a recuva undelete tool too get most of the important files back. movies and music got screwed.

but now i am stuck with logical volumes which i need to convert to primaries, to install archlinux, which i was what i was trying to do in the first place.

Do not mess with partitioning unless you are absolutely sure of what you're doing, especially not without backing up your data in case of a fuckup.

yeah, backing up this time, and doing formatting the entire harddrive. there is a invisible 8GB linux swap in there that only recovery software can see, but not linux. gonna clean everything and dual boot win7 and arch.

The problem is I only have 160GB drive, had a 320GB before but that died (also taking all my movies and music with it), and havent gotten around to buying a new drive.
