Ico is my favourite 3D adventure. Whilst most of you prefer the action esque 3D titles I am more for the puzzle/atmosphere.

If you like prince of persia, check out Ico on ps2.

Prince of Persia Sands of time is 2nd favorite game. The sequel is just more frustrating. Much more fighting, less puzzles.. Bosses cheat big time, doing moves you cannot block that send you 10 screens across a big hall, down a pit to your doom!. Its just really hard and eventually you give up not caring because you know the next room is harder than the one you just got through. You will encounter 3 bosses in the first 30 mins of the game.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Oh jeez, please tell me they're kidding about that...for frick's sake, you have the option to choose Easy difficulty now.

Ever since the re-design, EGM has lost all respect from me.

How's N64 Hexen? I've read that it's pretty bad compared to the PC version.

I tried Prince of Persia when I had a US PS2, and I found the game to be more frustrating then fun. I had never played any earlier games in the series, and wasn't prepared for all that crazy jumping, walking accross walls, etc. I thought it should be called "Gymnast of Persia"! :?

I thought that it was pretty impressive that they could somehow botch a port of a game that used the Doom engine to the N64. But that's a first person game, not a third person...

the original PC game sucked anyway...as did Hexen 2. and Heretic.

but Heretic 2 on PC was fucking awesome. It was pretty cool when it came out and it was even better when they improved the staff fighting in the game with a patch. Far more enjoyable than playing the Dark Forces games in third person.

Heavy Metal FAKK 2 was pretty rad too, though the last boss fight was anti-fun

Thanks for the opinion! How about N64 Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness? I can't imagine that it's as good as LOI for the PS2.

I totally beg to differ. They had great level design and atmosphere and Hexen's item system and classes were pretty fun.

Legacy of Darkness wasn't that bad, but the camera/controls were pretty rough. Some of the level designs were quite badass (such as the hedgemaze).

dave4shmups wrote:"Get Gunvalkyrie instead...which is another great 3D action game."

Yeah, I heard that Gunvalkyrie is kind of like a "free-roaming" Space Harrier. Plus, it was done by Sega's late AM2 development team.

Gun Valkyrie was made by Smilebit. Smilebit kicked all kinds of ass on the Xbox, despite the fact that I felt PDOrta was a step back from the originals.

Also, Crimson Tears is not the sequel to Crimson Sea and neither is related to Crimson Skies. 8) The sequel to Crimson Sea is Crimson Sea 2: Insert something really stupid here. And I apologize to anyone who LIKED Crimson Sea, but aside from like, the last 2 or 3 levels that game was quite sucky.

As for favorite 3D action platformers/action games, I'd go with MDK2, Super Mario 64 (DS or original), Evil Twin, Jet Grind Radio, Gun Valkyrie, and that could be it. 8)

really can't go wrong with SmileBit. it sucks that they don't exist anymore. at least while they were still alive, i could hold onto the unrealistic hope that they would make another Jet Set game. and still been trying to find a copy of Evil Twin. it just looks frickin' sweet.

the learning curve in GunValkyrie is the steepest i have encountered. it got to the point where i could get pretty good ratings on the first few levels, then i would put it down for a week, and play like rubbish again (repeat cycle).

NOTE: i always liked one kind of play-setup they considered. when it was still going to be a dreamcast game it was a light-gun hybrid. all movement, jet-ting, and weapon switching would have been done on the controller, while a light-gun would have been used for firing. sounds cool to me.
I have no sig whatsoever.

Hey JP, do you have the DC version of MDK2 or the PS2 version?

I'm guessing the DC version, since I don't think you have a PS2, but I don't know for certain. There's no need for sarcasm man, it was just a simple question. :?

My bad, meant to put a smiley in there to indicate it was more playful than assholish. 8)

Anyways, you are correct, no PS2 or PSanything will ever be owned by yours truly, and thus, I only own the DC version of the game. Though there is a PC version I hear. But fuck a keyboard, I needs a controller.

they are both pretty much the same. but in the PS2 you get a difficulty toggle (so get the DC version). the difficulty is part of the experience.

Dc all the way!
It's sad that we will probably never see another MDK title, unless EA picks it up. But then again who wants that?

No harm done JP!

Dang, the DC rev. is CHEAP on Ebay. But then again, so are most domestic Dreamcast games.

Anyways, when I get my XBOX, I'd love to try out Gunmetal. It was done by Rage, who did Incoming, whicn I love. I'd also like to try out the XBOX Toe Jam & Earl game; that looks pretty cool.

I take it from previous posts on this thread that Sonic Heroes is definately a step down from Sonic Adventure 1 and 2?

Gunmetal (if its what I'm thinking it is, the game where you're a mech/jet) is pretty damn fun. I got it when it came out and I had a blast with it. They actually did the whole "Yeah, you might want to transform now..." thing fairly well. Too bad your allies' AI was pitiful...

There's another game out thats somewhat similar (mech that turns into a jet), Aquila or something is what its called, its pretty fun and probably cheap now, you should check it out.

Toejam and Earl III is the shit if you like the original. I would highly recommend it. My sister and I spent hours playing it.

And you would be correct. Sonic Heroes is not even a fraction as good as Sonic Adventure 1 or 2.

Edit: Battle Engine Aquila is the name of the game. I seem to recall having a decent enough time with it, pretty cool how you actually captured territory and stuff during the levels (or rather, the infantry did).

I just noticed in the videos I've watched of Toe Jam & Earl that the characters move faster then in the orig. Genesis game, which I found to be a bit too slow.

JP, have you played Jedi Power Battle for the DC? Looks like a pretty fun Star Wars game.

Cool! How's Starlancer? As far as I know, it's the only 3D space shooter on the DC.

battle engine aquila is pretty good, only thing i didn't like was that for as bg as your army is you still end up being the only one that kills anything, sorta took away fromt he whole clashing armies/captureing territory thing.

my vote goes to spiderman 2.
it really does whatever a spider can.

MDK2 is best on PC imo. Color me spoiled because of the keyboard/mouse setup that offers ..you know..percise control over the DC's craptastic control setup. I've been meaning to pick up the PS2 version as well just because I heard they spiced up the graphics a bit over the DC and PC versions.

Overall not as good as the first game, though. Max's sections are nice, Doc's are annoying, and Kurt's are as good as ever, but on the whole the game just didn't feel as fresh and original as the first game.

It's a shame that the team that did the first game jumped ship from Shiny, otherwise Messiah and Enter the Matrix might not have sucked. They went on to do Giants: Citizen Kabuto and Armed & Dangerous, both of which were quite hot + wet (though Giants was the better of the two).

Spiderman on the DC looks pretty cool.

Would Expendable count as a 3D game? If so, I'd love to hear some feedback on it. It too, was done by Rage, and I've read it described as "the game Contra Legacy of War should have been".

Spiderman 1 and 2 were both pretty good. Treyarch has put out quite a few good games, including the two spiderman movie games as well. If you get a chance, I also recommend checking out Minority Report. ( I think i rambled on them back on page 1; don't remember)

Expendable is pretty damn rad, though IIRC the controls were a bit iffy. It's been a while since I've played it, but I recall having trouble strafing... it's also been released on Playstation and PC, so if you want to check it out you have a lot of different options (I've only played it on DC). Rage is a bit hit and miss, whereas I wasn't much of an Incoming fan, I fucking loved Expendable and Mobile Forces.

Shit, now I want to slap the Spiderman games on my dell laptop and play 'em at work :(

Expendable will beat your ass, fair warning. But its still a damn cool game with a lot of cool codes (First person mode anyone? Granted, its virtually impossible to play like that, but its not like the game is feasibly beatable anyways).

Starlancer is the fucking shit, and I believe it is still online. But yeah, I would HIGHLY recommend it, cause even without the badass multiplayer the single player is MORE than worth the price of admission.

SeaBlade for XBOX is another one I was going to ask about. Looks like a pretty fun 3rd-person shooter along the lines of Incoming.

Tonight, I play dai ou jou and laugh at your potential children.

I'll be missing out on Planet Joker, but oh well

Could Sega Rally count as a 3rd person action game if I use the out-of-car view? Probably not, but I just got it today and it's badass. If anyone's got any impressions of the DC sequel or sega touring car championship, I'd like to hear em...

Starlancer was recently rereleased on PC for the super expensive price for $10 brand new. Ohnos. I picked it up recently but am holding off on playing it until I get my flight stick from back home (I love the Saitek X45 flight system as much as the next guy, but I cut my teeth on my Sidewinder Percision Pro damnit. I can't fly half as well with anything else).

Maybe then I'll be able to finally work my way through my backlog of flight games (let's see... Starlancer and Freelancer first, play through Crimson Skies again, then clear through Freespace + expansion then Freespace 2, play through Crimson Skies again, then maybe think about playing some Allegiance since it's freeware/open source now...)

Still need to pick up a copy of Independence War 2 (the first one was god damned amazing)
