Cave shooters on Xbox360 question
I just got an X360 mainly to play cave shooters and the like. I just noticed that the image is pretty bad on an SD tv. It looks pretty fine with Under Defeat but with all the cave shooters I seem unable to get a decent picture. I don't own a component or HDMI able tv. Would an rgb scart cable help or are these games just made for HDTV's ?

What do you mean by bad? Did you try to play them in their original resolution? Some games like DS, Galuda 2 or Futari let you choose between Arcade and HD resolution.

Did you try banging the top of the tv with a hammer?
Re: Cave shooters on Xbox360 question
There is an RGB cable as well. Otherwise, buy a new TV.
Re: Cave shooters on Xbox360 question
Yeah this, just punch the TV few times and it'll be good. Also try kicking the console.professor ganson wrote:Did you try banging the top of the tv with a hammer?
Here's a funny story: My 2nd monitor was broken, it just didn't show the picture no matter what. I had tried everything and I assumed it was completely broken (the monitor was very, very bad and old) , so as a complete joke, I told my friend "Well let's try the good old method" a punched the monitor's back with full force: and it magically started working.

You're using composite video!?
What TV do you own and what inputs does it accept?

Ever thought about burning your house down? It could help.
Re: Cave shooters on Xbox360 question
Is it a crt tv? I have a crt I sometimes use in 480i for cave games and think it looks great for what it is.highlandcattle wrote:I just got an X360 mainly to play cave shooters and the like. On my CRT all 360 games looked terrible. I needed to get a new hd tv to get a decent picture.

Re: Cave shooters on Xbox360 question
hahaha, that's true. Though it's usually not as bad as people say. Of course depending on the TV and your settings. The wrong settings can also introduce a huge lag. And there are cases whre the lag can be really bad, especcially on big TVs. Though I find it way more of an issue with fighting games.DestroyTheCore wrote:Enjoy your input lag.
For my own setup at home I don't even notice any lag difference to my old CRT. Well, not that it would matter on the level that I play on anyway, i.e. not close to any WR or high level tournament.

Even with the VGA cable? My tv doesn't seem to add any (noticeable) input lag while using the vga input.DestroyTheCore wrote:Enjoy your input lag.Edge wrote:On my CRT all 360 games looked terrible. I needed to get a new hd tv to get a decent picture.
Re: Cave shooters on Xbox360 question
Not all TVs have terrible input lag.

Yeah, now that I think a bit more about it, I am not too sure about modern TVs always introducing lag.
So yeah, that I don't notice any lag on a good setup is not to say there is no lag. I just might not notice it. However what makes me wonder is that fighting game tournaments are played on modern TVs. And if these TVs would introduce any lag, I guess there would be a major outcry. See here, they use no CRTs in EVO for instance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=p ... g1X4#t=217
Are most of you guys using your 360 / PS3 on a CRT ?
EDIT:
Xyga clarified it one post above.

Re: Cave shooters on Xbox360 question
Most fighting game tournaments are run using one or two extremely specific models of monitors that are known to have very low input latency, such as the Asus VH236H, known as "The Evo Monitor" for this reason.Edge wrote:So yeah, that I don't notice any lag on a good setup is not to say there is no lag. When I'm shopping for an HDTV, I try to get one with as little input latency as possible (and will turn off all special processing or other things that can add latency when I'm playing games), but I can still feel a noticeable difference compared to my CRT. It's nothing that couldn't be adjusted to, but I really enjoy having as little input latency as possible when I'm playing a precision game like an STG or a rhythm game. So I usually play vert STGs on my tated CRT setup, because it feels better. Horis usually get played on the HDTV, though, because I'm not going to keep un-tateing that CRT every time I want to switch, and it's not that terrible.
There are definitely HDTVs out there that have awful lag, though, like the first one I got almost a decade ago. That thing was completely unusable for any precision games.
Re: Cave shooters on Xbox360 question
It's pretty simple, as far as we know only a handful of Sony TVs have sub-1 frame input lag: W6 & W7 series (except the 32" size).
Whatever displays they use during tournaments doesn't really matter, a lot of people are saying loads of crap about how the best gamers only play on the lowest-lag displays.
Most of the best players are actually okay as long as the latency isn't too noticeable (say about 1 or 1,5) it's their skills and training that make them good, not the absence of input lag.
Personally I'm a nut for low lag, but mainly because when I play on a digital display I want to avoid the flaws of current technology to spoil the experience as much as possible.
As long as it's not too high and actually perceptible I'm okay with input lag.
I think playing with near-zero latency is just a 'plus', like fake scanlines for instance.
One particularily irritating thing is that 'EVO monitor' scam; loads of lcd monitors have extremely low input lag (much below 1 frame), so for someone seeking to play with imperceptible latency there's plenty of choice for much better products today.
Those lousy, low-grade TN Asus monitors are nothing special, just hyped by ignorant fools on SRK.
If you're looking for reliable information on displays, check websites like hdtvtest.co.uk, prad.de, tftcentral.co.uk, pcmonitors.info, overclockers.ru, wecravegamestoo.com/forums/monitor-reviews-discussion.
There's also displaylag.com, like hdtvtest they only do quick Leo Bodnar testing but their growing database can be somewhat useful.
Anyway back on topic; many Cave 360 ports don't look very good depending on your cable and display choice, indeed. Stay away from composhit, and get a decent crt tv with scart input or a decent pc monitor with a rotating stand (there are quite good 27" monitors around).

Re: Cave shooters on Xbox360 question
Yeah I know I should say away from composite but I was wondering if it is still usefull to buy a scart rgb cable for a xbox 360 or if I best simply get a component capable tv. I have various models of sony consumer and pvm tv's and several B&O tvs and also a bunch of Commodore monitors. But seeying as the 360 is my first array in the HDMI territory, I don't have any TV set to connect it too. It seems that those cave games are just emulators optimized for 1080i and look absolutely shite on a regular monitor which is a bit silly seeying as all these games were originaly designed to run on standard monitors in the arcadeXyga wrote:

Re: Cave shooters on Xbox360 question
I think many people are well pleased with just a scart rgb cable and a crt tv. Since you are already well equipped with crt displays I think you will really like it.
It's 480i, but 'clean' enough for most games IMHO.
Some games like Futari have been optimized (a bit) for hd displays, others like the MMP/PS compilation will look like crap no matter the display used.
I mean a hd display might not be worth the investment if it's just for a handful of Cave ports that will look okay on it.
Let your purse decide;
- The 42" Sony W6/W7 are worth around £500, and they're not really 'tate' friendly (quite large and require a mounting adaptor)
- Decent large hd monitors fit for hd consoles and easy tate like the Iiyama ProLite XB2783HSU or Asus VN279QLB, go for around £230 - £290
- An original 360 scart lead can be found for just £10...
EDIT: forgot something -> I have never tried the 360 on a 100Hz/component crt tv. I bet it's excellent but personally I wouldn't think about putting a 16:9 one in vertical position. I would go for a 4:3 model with a convenient square frame, most have shitty geometry though.
