Just wondering if anyone else here played Nethack: I'd love to start a little YASD ("Yet Another Stupid Death") story thread
As for my dumbest death, there was the time I found a scroll of genocide early on; I chose to eliminate all Mind Flayers. Turns out the scroll was cursed, so it summoned a bunch of mind flayers right next to me. I died 2 turns afterwards from having my INT stat reduced below the minimum.
May whoever never became a starving, floating corpse because of cursed levitation boots throw the first stone.
Cursed amulet of choking is another favourite of mine.
Necronopticous is a hardcore Nethack player in here. Bet he has tons of YASD stories to tell.
As for me...as much as I like dungeon crawlers, I have yet to click with Nethack. I never got too far, my runs usually end in the mines before Minetown or around floor 7 or 8 in the main dungeon. Never got the hang of the whole BUC / identifying items thing either.
The fact that reading spoilers is a requirement to finish the game annoys me a lot and I refuse to do it. I know it's holding me back but I can't help but feel like cheating if I read them.
And, because I never get far and my characters die too quickly, I end up getting discouraged and give up. I still want to get back to this and ascend a character at some point though.
My most memorable Nethack moment was rolling a Ranger and wondering why the hell my arrows had no range. I'd spot an enemy across the room, fire an arrow at it and the arrow would drop right in front of me. I was like "Wtf is wrong with this bow??". After doing this for 2 floors, I realize I was throwing the arrows with my hand instead of using the bow. I felt like an idiot.
In the last few years I think I have far more memorable stories leading up to boring deaths than I do interesting, unexpected deaths. I believe this is simply due to my familiarity with the game at this point. The one that immediately springs to mind was my pacifism almost-ascension, in which I overcame a series of unbelievable hurdles as I clawed my way up through the ascension run, only to die on the Astral. Here is the dump:
