999 / Virtue's Last Reward series halted?!

Gosh I died a lot of ways in those games, I still don't know why for some instances. This should continue simply because it is an established series.

Any philanthropists out there?

Also played the demo, the aesthetic didn't appeal to me, and the puzzle solving part was quite boring imo.
Danganronpa on the other hand, drew me in much more easily.

After tapping button A 20 million times during the demo intro cutscene and it still taking half an hour to get through, I didn't even bother trying to play.

Well, the game 999 is actually closer to a visual novel. Of course you'll press A 20 millions times.

I played both games and I thought 999 had a great atmosphere and the tension was very well conveyed. VLR, on the other hand, was a bit disappointing as the game had a complex "ambidex" system that created too many different routes with not enough differences to make up for the fact that all of these take place in the same location. The flowchart was a handy addition but ultimately reduced the immersive power of the game as you were simply jumping from a route to another to solve puzzles and unlock things instead of better understanding the plot. The tension and horror were also drastically reduced but this one was apparently some executives' fault as they thought 999 was too scary and dark for a Japanese audience and forced Uchikoshi to soften VLR, according to interviews. The fanservice-y characters were also off-putting as they clashed with the game's seriousness .

But having played Ever17 beforehand, I was not as impressed by the plot twists in 999 and VLR as in Ever17's true ending. Some ideas are kinda similar and these two games feel like the same game but not as good. However, 999 had a better pacing and an atmosphere that was very different and interesting on its own.

I read about the difficulties the writer has to have a third installment greenlit but I would not be too bothered if the trilogy's conclusion never came out, because I believe it would be even worse.

For those complaining about pressing the A button a ton of times, well, it is a visual novel, so it is to be expected. It would be like complaining about having to turn the pages of book.

I would be rather disappointed if the last game wasn't made. I thoroughly enjoyed the previous two games, even though they were far from my usual game tastes. I thought they were brilliantly entertaining and melodramatic, and I got quite caught up in them to be honest.

As for the complaints about pressing A a bunch, it's like complaining about shmups because you die in one shot, there's too much going on on screen, etc. The correct response, I believe, is 'no shit, Sherlock'.
