I've been trying to restart less. You can never tell when a run will turn good.
Chaos Phoenixma wrote: I hate the term "shmup" so much and pretty much refuse to use it.
I use it. It's very versatile. It can be used outside of gaming talk. The look on someone's face when you yell at them "hey, shmup you" is just priceless. Or the ever popular "you taking the shmup mate? You think I give a shmup?"

On a serious note, if I use any term other than "shmup" , people think I'm talking about an fps.

Possible alternatives:
Shmoop.
Space invaders clone.
Atari.
Ye olde shooting game.
Avoid the hit box game.
Vertical shooter.
A real shooter as in not an fps shooter you filthy casual.
The one with the boom and the swerve.

I (and some people I know) tend to use "dodging game" in Finnish.

That's actually a really good alternative. Dodging game, I might use that. I just worry people in english speaking countries attribute dodging with "dodgeball".

After careful consideration, a "shoot'em up" with no abbreviations seems to get the job done for me albeit it being a mouthful.

This is my favorite. But as long as you don't call it a "shump," I'm okay with it.

Personally I'm partial to the term STG. It has nice ring to it, methinks.

In Italian I call them something like:

"those kinda old-ish games where you control a plane, dodging bullets and shooting down enemies and stuff."

yeah... doesn't work nearly as well.
Cagar wrote:I (and some people I know) tend to use "dodging game" in Finnish.
That explains it quite well. It doesn't really translate well in my langauge, sadly.

Yeah actually most Japanese people don't know what you mean by "shooting game" either, they also tend to think FPS. Though if the person in question is over 40 you can use Invader-kei and they will get what you mean (and automatically think you are awesome).

I remember trying to talk about shmups with someone IRL, and I started by saying shoot 'em up, and corrected myself to "2D shoot 'em up" (mostly because shmup sounds stupid and they probably wouldn't understand it anyway), and they were all "why would you ever play a 2D shoot 'em up" :emo: Then I tried to explain it by using Galaga as an example. Then they offered "arcade shooter" as a term, which I think is a pretty good one.

I notice in the fourth stage of Dimahoo there are apparently some secret items released from destroying enemies with 0 bomb stock. Is it worth emptying your bombs for this?

BareknuckleRoo wrote:The in-game tutorials I'm pretty sure explain that 'Hell' difficulty corresponds with the original arcade game patterns, at least it does in Mushi and Futari. Playing on anything below Hell is easier than it normally is.
In particular, at Hard instead of Hell, 1/2 of bullets will not be spawned (unless the enemy only shoots one bullet) (this means 'bullets that shoot bullets' patterns are down to 1/4 btw) and the maximum velocity of a lot of (all?) patterns is reduced.
I assume Normal is 1/3 or 1/4 or something like that and another maximum velocity stepdown, but I haven't tested it.
I like to play on Hard when I don't feel so well or if I'm not well exposed to a mode and I want a gentle introduction to what kinds of enemies and patterns I will see in it. Something like Futari Ultra is difficult enough to the point where Ultra/Hard is still incredibly difficult.

On espgaluda 2 and dodonpachi resurrection for Android. There are only 3 difficulty levels, easy normal and hard. I can't choose the hell difficulty. Is it an unlockable?

A lot of people in their 20s know shooting games though, from my experience.
Going to the arcades to play actual games and not just get crane toys for your date was apparently a thing in the 90s.

Remember hanging out with a pretty serious karate-ka when we did some bars in Ikebukuro, somehow we got on the subject of arcades and ended up talking about Garegga.
Needless to say, neither he nor I fit in the typical "nerd" look, appearance wise.

They changed the system for these 2 games.
new - old
Hard == Hell
Normal == Hard
Easy/Novice == Normal or Novice not sure, never tried this low difficulty

Is there a mame version of Guwange that has the score in an intelligible format for those of us who aren't from the land of the rising sun? I'd like to know how I'm doing for a change (outside of the obvious "killed at cat spider again").

I don't think so, but you really only need to learn six characters. (1-3 don't count)

Think of it as a small amount of personal improvement.

Do the Cave 360 ports let you post to leaderboards with a silver membership? I'm not paying for more gold membership unless I actually need to.

It's not about having zero bombs, it's about having an empty bomb METER (the small fragments you collect to obtain a full bomb drop). Being able to play and plan on when and where you need an empty meter is highly advanced and probably not worth it unless you are going for a VERY high score.

Ooooh, okay. Thanks.
