iPhone / iPad Shmups
Re: iPhone / iPad Shmups
From now on I will post new iOS shmups (that their respective developers forgot to post here in time) in this thread when I have time, because someone said me to not post any more mobile shmup threads here (spam?). I will leave new iOS (and probably all mobile) shmup threads to the shmup developers.
The latest vertical shmups that appeared on the App Store today seem to be rip-offs of each other.
EDIT: Space War HD (Video (actually recorded using an external camera)) (This shmup is not the shmup ripoff I mentioned above)

I express my apologies for posting a bunch of mobile shmup threads in this forum in recent months, because some members perceive them as "spam." I have to redeem myself.

Hm. How often do they go on sale? Last sale was August I think? When was the last one before that? I might not be able to wait for so longrjosal wrote:Well you should know that every single cave game eventually goes on a pretty significant sale from time to time, even IAP. Personally, I gravitate towards the older games , not because they're cheaper, I just like that era the best.

Yeah, Maximum is actually incredibly solid. Right now I'm going back and forth between Maximum and Resurrection. It's just that Maximum is a bit steep.BareknuckleRoo wrote:Maximum plays the best, namely because it was designed around not requiring a bunch of horrible onscreen buttons. The iPhone mode of Galuda 2 might be interesting, but for the most part, you can pretty much bet they all play a lot better with a controller/stick with actual buttons, particularly the games that require lots of shot type switching for scoring.
Just get whatever game you like the best so you have it on the go, but accept that it won't be as much fun or as easy to control when it comes to rapid shot type switching/hypering/bombing.
Bug Princess is also pretty fun.

Four: The Space Flight is finally released on the New Zealand iTunes App Store! (I mean, the thread for this game will be the last mobile shmup thread created by me, for obvious reasons.)

Re: iPhone / iPad Shmups
I'm not sure about the average interval between sales but it seems like it's already been longer than whatever that is now. All the games get a little notification badge about it that I haven't seen for a long time. They tend to line up with holidays or game anniversaries.heisenbergman wrote:Hm. On the topic of DDP Max I find it to be my least favorite because of the simplistic scoring, lack of an arcade mode (you just play 1 stage at a time), and the simple art with no backgrounds. And there's an explosion track that plays while stuff is blowing up, meaning that each ship doesn't make it's own explosion. It really seemed to me like something they threw together to test the market for a mobile game only. I still haven't beaten hibachi yet, so at least there's that for replayability.
Re: iPhone / iPad Shmups
I've done a new game for iOS in the GeoVertex game editor - TBHS4
Geovertex -http://appshopper.com/games/geovertex
TBHS4 - http://www.relicagames.co.uk/gv/userGames.html
It is vertical shmup with touch control. It has two levels (more are planned), some sounds and a lot of improvements over the previous version.
The game is made on the iPod touch 5, I do not know how it will work on other devices.

Wow, VLAD, 5 screenshots and 4 clearly have no bullets and 1 appears to have 3 bullets. Not looking good...

Re: iPhone / iPad Shmups
A couple quick opinions regarding some of the lesser known iOS shooters I tried recently:
Vritra is a horizontal shooter, however the controls seem to floaty and imprecise and the graphics are simplistic.
Lightning Fighter 1 is a vert, and is awesome, definitely worth the purchase. Could be a bit harder though.
Teslapunk has a free-to-play business model and right away that turned me off. The graphics are detailed, however the objects could use some shadowing or something to give them weight - your ship and the enemies look flat, like pieces of paper floating along the background.
Infinity Danger is a dual stick field shooter, I personally am not big on that type of game and I wouldn't have downloaded it if I noticed that in advance.
I will second those who recommended Phoenix, it is my favorite alongside the Cave games and the Danmaku Unlimiteds.

Re: iPhone / iPad Shmups
Just an update r-type 2 is now out on iOS.
Also Bladez is nice. Anyone want to start posting impressions in here?
Wondering if anyone wants to join me in posting impressions of the numerous ios shmups releasing weekly on mobile platforms.
Bullet Sky
Free
Control: sadly you place your finger over the ship meaning it's your thumb that you will need to weave through the shots. Unfortunately the hit box is in your ship and not your thumb which makes this an ok control scheme for a vert, but really not the best. Game stops and pauses if you lift your finger. Your ship also moves as if it's sprite is a 121 representation of your finger which while nice somehow doesn't convey a sense of flight the way other shmups do.
Design: has that iOS free to,play I drew this on a napkin feel. The actual enemies designs are kinda cool with a lot of circular aerial motifs that look like something the Protos would engage in.
Gameplay: I find this to be a slow start, but over all it's not that bad of a shmup. It feels like someone made this as a project in an iOS framework and then never came back to it. It's not the worst shmup on iOS, but it's not the best either. I played through about 3 levels and wanted to go on.
Freesia: has in app purchases, but you can try it for free. It's not pushy and fairly fun.

That looks really cool and for 0.99 usd not a bad price (no credit card in my iOS account right now). Can we get more impressions?
Re: iPhone / iPad Shmups
Hi all, I'm experiencing an annoying glitch in the iOS version of Dodonpachi DaiOuJou ('Blissful Death'). I am playing it on an iPad and whenever I tap a virtual button, it steals 'move the ship' status from the finger that was previously moving it, so to use a virtual button I have to lift my 'move the ship' finger and press it down again. (Alternatively, I can use manual bomb/hyper and double tap to toggle laser modes and not deal with this <.<; ) This is in contrast to, for example, futari iOS where your 'move the ship' finger can never lose 'move the ship' status, it has to be lifted from the screen for a different finger to take over.
Is anyone familiar with this bug and knows a solution to it?

Sadly no. It might be better to contact Cave's support network / forums.Patashu wrote:Hi all, I'm experiencing an annoying glitch in the iOS version of Dodonpachi DaiOuJou ('Blissful Death'). Alien Ride is a free iOS/Android STG made to promote the dubstep plaguebearer Skrillex's new album. If you need any more reason not to play it, be warned that it automatically downloads songs to your device without your consent.

Re: iPhone / iPad Shmups
Hi guys,
I am thinking about pourchasing an Ipad mini Retina for looking movies, looking books(pdf) and of course enjoy some shmups
Currently, I have a quite cheap chinese tablet. (7 inch screen). I have installed some shmups on it but I am not very happy with the results. The good shmups are running slowly (Dodonpachi resurection and Danmaku illimited 2) and graphics 2d are quite blur.
I have downloaded so many games on my tablet but all of them (100%) are really boring after a while . Shmups is a the only kind of game I can enjoy on tablet.
Does anyone have tested some shmups on Ipad with a retina screen ? It looks like some shmups on apple store are optimized "HD". How does it looks ? Do you thin a "standard" Ipad mini (no retina) would be enought? What about the remanence ?
I like to play on a tablet with a 7 inch screen because I find it very convenient. You can hold the tablet like a gameboy and control with your thumb. ( I have no feeling controling naval vessels with the index)
The Ipad mini retina have a 7.9 inch screen : I held it in a Apple store and I guess it should be ok.
It also looks like some Ipad mini retina have some Image Retention Issues :
http://www.macrumors.com/2013/11/15/som ... on-issues/
http://www.padgadget.com/2013/11/15/ipa ... a-display/
THis problem occurs most of the time on Wifi +Cellular Ipad but aybe it has been fixed now...

Re: iPhone / iPad Shmups
It amazes me how many Raiden rip-offs I've come across on the iTunes app store and Google Play Store. This game's title is "Raiden 3D", that is clearly the Japanese kanji for Raiden. When I googled "雷电", this came up, just as I expected.astroid wrote:A very good shmup By KooGame was released! Its title is "雷电3D"Here is the link.

It's so hilarious to see these half-assed rip-offs that bastardize the Raiden name and even use official stolen artwork and such in the art. Most of these are being made by some unknown Korean or Chinese developers.

Re: iPhone / iPad Shmups
While this thread is active:

Busterspirits
Has the most annoying advertising model an iOS game can have: it interrupts play to force you to deny an ad. Sadly, it's actually a rather hectic and fun little game. Retro 8 bit sprites build up into a quick bullet hell and it even choompas... Which I have never seen in a shmup before. Something about this feels off. Buster spirits is a good game it's just drenched in everything wrong about the free / advertising model which is a shame, I really enjoyed my time with this one. I think it might be a clone of an even better game taken the quality, but obviously destructive monetization model.
Btw touch arcade takes on the king of shmups actual title of the app:

I tried Dodonpachi DaiOuJou [iOS] today and the bug is no longer occuring. Re: iPhone / iPad Shmups
In a word the early levels are slow and fairly easy.
The game is now free to play with micro translations.

The jewels you receive in combat, but keep in mind a continue in level costs 800 jewels to DO NOT CONTINUE

雷电3D is the name
Over all though a good game which apparently is a raiden ripoff

The free to play model isn't toxic it just requires 1cc play through of the first few levels to unlock everything.
