The Guardian Legend
Super Aleste, just as long as it's not played on the default difficulty.

Hard to choose when SO many are SO good... But...
Second, Super Aleste.
First, Zanac Neo!
After that - everything else!

Of those I've played Super Aleste is my favorite, though admittedly that one has a lot of nostalgia behind it in my case.

Re: What's your favorite shmup by Compile?
The Guardian Legend would be my first answer. Zanac Neo is the only "pure" Compile STG I can bear to play for longer than a few minutes. It shares the main flaws of all their shooters in that it's too easy, repetitious, and overly long, but at least the graphics, music, weapons and enemies are much more interesting and higher quality.

Re: What's your favorite shmup by Compile?
Robo Aleste and Zanac (NES) and Space Megaforce are the ones I played the most back in the day.
In recent years I go to the PC-Engine with Spriggan and Sylphia.
I particulaly like the art and setting of Sylphia.
GunNac needs a mention as that's a fantastic parody shmup.
I've got a Master System cart of GG Aleste II just laying around, I really need to give that a go

Zanac Neo is the only one I've played.

Hard to name only one. A tie between Zanac Neo and Super Aleste, i guess.

Probably either Power Strike II or RUDE BREAKER

Zanac Neo, closely followed by the "Special" version of the original game that's also on Zanac X Zanac.

Re: What's your favorite shmup by Compile?here
5. GunHed - PC Engine
4. Super Aleste - Super Famicom
3. Zanac Neo - PlayStation
2. Seirei Senshi Spriggan - PC Engine CD
1. Musha Aleste - Mega Drive
I always was fascinated with how Compile could push hardware in their shmups...the only exception being Sylphia for PC Engine SCD. However, while that title utilized some Compile employees and their sound team, in addition to appearing to use the Spriggan engine, the main programmer, I believe, was a Tonkin House employee, not a Compile employee. Maybe that's why the Compile logo is nowhere in or on the software.

Re: What's your favorite shmup by Compile?
Zanac Neo (played on PSX rather than PS2 where it may lag) and Zanac Special Version. Furthermore, Gunhed (on hidden difficulties). All three can be played using only two buttons which is how I like my Compile shmupping. Then Seirei Senshi Spriggan brought the most unique Caravan modes to the table.
Funnily enough, Zanac Neo (much like Wander Wonder) shows Compile weren't tech wizards anymore in 32 bit era, but it doesn't matter one bit if the game looks underwhelming. It's the ultimate Compile shmup nonetheless.

Btw, Gun-Nac needs to be played on higher difficulty settings for full fun to be realized.
Re: What's your favorite shmup by Compile?

Re: What's your favorite shmup by Compile?
I agree, but the same can be said for most other Compile shmups with difficulty levels, including Blazing Lazers, GG Aleste, and Super Aleste. I find it interesting that Gun-Nac even has an option to adjust the priority of the sprites.professor ganson wrote:Btw, Gun-Nac needs to be played on higher difficulty settings for full fun to be realized.

Wow I didn't know about Zanac Neo.
Glad I missed on this game so I still have something ahead to enjoy.
That said, Spriggan and Gunhed would be on my top list, then Super Aleste and Musha...
Robo Aleste would be the one I found the least fun to play.

Re: What's your favorite shmup by Compile?
Zanac, NES ver. Easily. I need to get round to playing more than a few mins of the Special Version though.
Aleste 2 in second place.
It's a shame Zanac EX is so slow compared to the NES/FDS games.
