There's barely enough time to enter it. As soon as you see the title screen start enter Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A, if you need 2 player hit select now and whack start as fast as you can. There is no chime.

Just to make sure : in Life Force, the Konami code doesn't give you more fire power (as it does in Gradius), it "just" give you 30 lives. You can only see it if you look at your lives stock, maybe that's why you asume it doesn't work.
