Hey hey --

Looks like I'll be relocating to Ottawa sometime next year, I'm curious to hear from anyone who lives there or has lived there which areas are good to look for apartments.

My wife is going to be studying at University of Ottawa, and I'm going to be looking for an IT job of some sort, either support or network engineering.

I've heard New Edinburgh and Rockcliffe are good areas? But understandably higher priced.

Yeah, I'll be very sad to leave Toronto, lived here all my life! It won't be until next year at the earliest, it all depends on if I can get a decent job out there. I have a very good job here so it doesn't make sense to give that up unless I've got something at least as good lined up.

She's been accepted into a very competitive Ph.D. program, it's a really amazing opportunity that we decided was worth moving out there for.

I've visited Ottawa many times, roughly twice a year for the last several years, so I'm somewhat familiar with it, but looking for housing and an apartment obviously is a different story.

One thing I am looking forward to is getting a 2 bedroom, the 2nd room should be excellent for a gaming setup, maybe even a cab

I've been out there a few times, seems pretty boss. The more northern parts of Vancouver Island are some of the most beautiful parts of Canada I've ever seen.

Do you want a nice place or a cheap place to buy or rent or what? Rents are the same or a little higher than Toronto, which makes no sense but there you go. Rockliffe is where millionaires and diplomats live, I doubt that's what you're looking for. New Edinburgh is nice but kind of played out and overpriced considering it isn't near anything but Vanier and a cemetery. A similar neighbourhood but not fully gentrified yet and with more to do would be Hintonburg, and there are some decent student-y rental accommodations in Sandy Hill near the U of O campus. Centertown is the rental HQ for students at either university, also for skids. Nice mixture of high and low end rental properties in the Glebe.

The further West and South into the burbs you go the cheaper things get, but I don't know what kind of commuting you want to do.

Rent can't be any higher than Toronto -- I have a friend who just got a condo downtown, it's technically not even a 1 bedroom maybe a bachelor I guess, something like 600 sq. ft. for $1495.

We're looking for a 2 bedroom rental, preferably in a building, in the $1000 / month range. We're both in our mid-30's, so we'd prefer to stay away from the more student-y areas and yeah Vanier I've heard terrible things about.

We have friends that have a house in Nepean right near the experimental farm, so I'm fairly familiar with that area and I know there are a lot of amenities around there. We have a car, but I would definitely prefer taking transit in and out of downtown. It's certainly not guaranteed I'll be working downtown, so that could change, but for sure my wife will need to get to and from the university easily. I know they're working on a new light rail system around there, so I'm hoping that improves the commute significantly.

Oh also my mother-in-law bought a condo somewhere in Wellington, but I'm not making that a deciding factor for anything

I believe you could buy/rent a condo for cheaper on the other side of the river, aka Gatineau (Hull/Aylmer sectors). The Plateau area is very nice. It helps being able to speak a bit of French though.

I've been living around these parts for about 13 years (moved here from Quebec city after university) and it's pretty neat once you get used to it (though, admittedly, I am not a fan of big cities like Montreal (never been to TO)).

Pretty much all you need to do is get a new health card for that province, although be advised once you do, it voids your Ontario one, so when/if you come back, you would need to get a new one.

I know this from like 8 years ago when the missus and I thought it would be a great idea to move to Nova Scotia to be closer to my family and have a fresh start. Needless to say, we came back in like 10 months.

That being said, I would be very hesitant to move to and try to work in Quebec unless you have fairly fluent francais speak.

Actually the experimental farm/civil hospital area has a lot of nice divided houses, and its not far from the major transit routes, so that might be a good area to look.

That's about what a near-downtown condo is in Ottawa as well. I haven't checked prices lately but 2-bedroom rental should be doable for $1000, more like $1200 for a nicer place/better location. I don't know why the prices are high in Ottawa, there is no obvious justification for it.

Hull is very cheap, and close to downtown, and the food is better, and Quebec is hilarious %100 of the time. But with a QC address you raise a bunch of tax and possibly tuition issues.

I guess I should update this!

We took a trip on the May long weekend to look at a few apartments we had found on Kijiji, and though the first few we looked at were fucking horrible, we found a really nice 1-bedroom in Elmvale in a very clean, modern building. It was a young couple that was stuck in a 1 year lease and needed to move out, they had only been there for 4 months and the unit had been completely renovated before they moved it -- new doors on all the cupboards and brand new laminate floors.

It's on the 16th floor facing north so it has an amazing view, and it has air conditioning

Another great thing is that it's across the street from a shopping center with everything you could need, so will be perfect for my wife while she's there on her own for a few months.

Sadly, because it's a 1-bedroom, I won't be getting my own space for gaming/music/whatever
