weird names for shmups....?

Post by TheRed »

well, I have noticed some weird names on shmups a lot!! Over at a friends house I played a game called "Hotdog Storm" and it was damn good fun too...but wtf? It's a jet fighter type game and you have a couple burgers on the ground to shoot, but the enemies are all normal big ships with lots of guns etc...

never saw a hotdog,lol...

anywys, just wondering what other weird names were out there...

Not necessarily(sp?) the weird games...but weird names. Like the Nes shmup...Gun Nac...(again, a really fun game and awesome for the nes,imo...but there's freakin rabbits and carrots everywhere. That's a weird name. Doesn't really fit the game I guess...

but I am talking about just off the wall weird names like "Hotdog Storm"

When I first heard the name "Mushihime Sama" I thought it was going to be a shmup involving mushrooms.

Pop 'n Twinbee sounds really odd. Slap fight sounds more suggestive than it actually is.

"Einhander" is certainly an unusual name, even though it makes perfect sense. And in my constant quest for the game I have come to overlook the fact that "Radiant Silvergun" is something that I wouldn't think of either :P
...and suddenly, a very freaky wormhole opened, and 4 3-foot tall market analysts fell out...

Crying (Biohazard Battle)
Dangerous Seed
Download
Master of Weapon
Nostradamus
Silk Worm
Skull Fang
SRD: Super Real Darwin
Undead Line
X-Dazedly-Ray
Zaviga

I think the strangest is "Crying".
"Master of Weapon" reminds me of martial arts movies.

Xexyz isn't a true shmup though. It's mainly platformer/adventure based with a small shmup segment in each fortress and alternating shmup levels (short) between fortress levels.

Scrambled Eggs and Androgynus aren't weird, but are very unsuitable for a shmup :)

^^Looking at Shatter's sig, Compile's names do not strike me as being that odd or unfitting. "Gulkave" has a certain ring to it.

Somewhat like Xain'D Sleena, but with some Cadash elements.

Now here are some unusual shmup names I've seen:

*Metal Black
*Grid Seeker
*Stagger I

DOG NUTS? Professor ganson, what is this game?
Kinect? KIN NOT.

You got it, Specineff. It was your avatar that reminded me of this forgotten gem. Some classify Dog Nuts as a pure shooter, but in the Journal of Game Studies there was recently a rather compelling argument for the claim that it is a neutering sim. I tend to think of it as a borderliner.

Terra Diver
Geppy-X
Planet Joker
L-Dis

Hell, there's probably more odd shooter names than "normal" action-oriented shooter names.

Super Laydock - MSX

But, how could you all forget these weird names:
Amateurs ;)

Cho Aniki - Kyuukyoku Muteki Ginga Saikyou Otoko No Gyakushuu / Super Big Brothers - The Galaxy’s Most Invincible Strongest Man - PS-1

Cho Aniki - Sei Naru Protein Densetsu / Super Big Brothers - Legend of Holy Protein
- PS-2
Remake of Masaya / NCS's classic shooter from the PC-Engine, Funny Gay game, featuring two naked muscle men Adon and Samson as the main characters, and a bunch of muscle men as bosses.
The player's objective is to guide a legendary glob of protein to holy lands through groups of enemies that are aiming for the protein in order to get the ultimate physique

I bought this game
Reason why I bought it: cuz the two guys on the cover told me to...
Do I regret it?
NOWAY..its a shmup!!!!

Seriously How Could You not Get it?
This game goes down in the annals of gaming history as the gayest shooting game ever.
Not many games can take that title. So enjoy.
Then fire up Dead or Alive 2, don't worry you'll be ok.

I do believe people are forgetting a certain series of doujin shmups.

Highly Responsive to Prayers (awesome name, too bad it's a borderliner)
Story of Eastern Wonderland (not weird enough)
Phantasmagoria of Dim. Dream (awesome!)
Lotus Land Story
Mystic Square
Embodiment of Scarlet Devil
Perfect Cherry Blossom (not weird enough)
Imperishable Night (nearly not weird enough)
Phantasmagoria of Flower View (awesomer!)
Shoot the Bullet (...)

Haha, just remembered SCAT.

Too bad there wasn't a sequel, I can see it now -- SCAT II: Revenge of the Cleveland Steamer.
