Breaker Pro boot disc for PS1/PS2
Breaker Pro boot disc for PS1/PS2
Is there anyone who uses this to play Japanese PS1 or 2 games on their NA system? I'm thinking about making the jump because I really want to play Gradius Gaiden in its original form. Can anyone vouch for the efficiency of the product? Here is a link: http://www.modchipcentral.com/store/pro ... 255&page=1
For the record, I'm looking for the easiest way to play imports. Thanks in advance guys.

I have something similar for the PS2 to play Japanese stuff on my US console. You need more than just the CD though, you need something which lets you change the disc from bootdisc to gamedisc.
Re: Breaker Pro boot disc for PS1/PS2
Swapping disc on a phat PS2 requires removing the disc cover to utilize a swap card. Requires little to no knowledge of the PS2 internals and works for import PS1/PS2 games. PS2 imports require a speciality swap disc for swapping, but PS1 import swapping can utilize any PS1 game at the memory/game selection menu. I believe this is the safesty method instead of swapping it during a NA ps1 loading at the Sony Gold load screen. I'll post up a tutorial doing this method sometime tonight.

I can tell you that the breaker pro disc does work for GG on a PS1.

If you want a smooth Gradius Gaiden experience you probably need to stick to a PS1 - in the end it may simply be less hassle to get a used NTSC-J PSOne.PS1 Shmups Compatibility on PS2
Also, a few notes on the backwards compatibility of the PS2, as it relates to playing PS1 shmups. While most such games work fine, others are imperfect, and a few barely work at all thanks to uber-slowdown; the situation may sometimes vary further depending on which specific system revision involved, but here are a couple of documented examples. The most severe cases of the aforementioned slowdown occur with Toaplan Shooting Battle (on Kyukyoku Tiger and Twin Cobra), Gradius Deluxe Pack (on Gradius II) Gradius Gaiden (on Stage 7), and Namco Museum Encore (on Rolling Thunder) – some other shooters, including Night Raid, Strikers 1945 II, and Zanac Neo (on Zanac X Zanac) suffer from some degree of input lag. The PS2 is still a great shmup machine, especially taking into consideration the de facto addition of most of the PS1 library to its repertoire, but one should still take note of the unfortunate exceptions that exist.

Mind you, there are a few PS2 models that run Gradius Gaiden smoothly but there hasn't been a complete list indicating which ones.HydrogLox wrote:The Playstation 2 (PS2) Shmups LibraryNintendo Saturn wrote:Is there anyone who uses this to play Japanese PS1 or 2 games on their NA system? ... I was also interested in Zanac Neo (already have it on PSN, but it's not the same...), bummer.
I own an original PS1 (purchased in March 98) and a so called "phat" PS2 bought in 2002. It's really too bad that a convenient device like the Action Replay cart doesn't really exist for the first two Sony systems, or else I'd be all over a bunch of imports.

If you plan to import a lot of PS1 games, why not just import a PS1 system? Cheap as hell, and small enough to not affect shipping much. I'm sure some sellers would throw a PS1 in the bundle for free if you bought enough games lol.

Mod chips are cheap, if you can find someone good to install them.

I finally purchased the Breaker Pro boot disc here: http://www.modchipcentral.com/store/pro ... 255&page=1
Still, I am unable to play Zanac x Zanac on my NA PS1. Here's what the site says regarding how to use the disc:

Is anyone familiar with that particular boot disc? I'm pretty much stomped.Features:
•Allows PS-ONE and Playstation 2 to play PS-One import games and backup games without internal modification
•No warranty issues - console remains completely intact
•No need for chips or soldering.
•No technical knowledge whatsoever is required.
•Works on all original PS-One and Playstation 2.
•Can be used as the TOC Disc together with the Swap Magic Set.
Contents:
•Breaker Pro Disc
•Slide Card Tool discontinued not included. (need this for phat Ps2 or magic switch for slim Ps2)

Good luck with Zanac Neo (alas, it might be laggy on certain PS2s). Find somebody to install a modchip for you.

The boot disc is for my PS1.
Yeah, I'm in the process of acquiring a Japanese PS2 and probably PS1 also... I don't know who could safely install modchips on PS1s and 2s these days (I'm in Canada).
Anyways, the boot disc sucks.

Importing an already chipped console might be a safer way. This looks sound to me, although I don't know how much shipping would cost. Mind, once NTSC game boots on a PAL PSX, it's regular NTSC signal. Less bothersome than PAL Saturn (where you need a 60 Hz mod).

This week, I finally ended up purchasing a Japanese PS1 AND PS2.
That crappy Breaker Pro boot disc I bought a month or so ago is now available for sale, lol.

Can I play Japanese PS2 games on my computer, if I change the emulator's region to JPN. Frankly, I don't see the difference between loading a Bin_Cue, whatever file, and using an actual physical disc in the physical disc-drive.
So, would this work?

Re: Breaker Pro boot disc for PS1/PS2
Never heard of emulators retaining region lock. Actual PS2 (PAL), once modded one way or another, runs NTSC games just fine, so why would emulator be any different in this regard?Doctor Butler wrote:Can I play Japanese PS2 games on my computer, if I change the emulator's region to JPN. The point of using disc images stored on HDD instead of real discs in optical drive is that you preserve the latter (loading times are possibly shorter too, but your mileage may vary).
