Ah, NTSC-J games should work on Asian consoles since they use NTSC-J. There is a few exceptions due to "country locking", but I believe both will run on Korean x360s.japtor wrote:Meant the other way around, can 360s in Korea (Asia region I guess?) play all JP games? Cool, thanks.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Does anyone know if I can use the BNC outputs of one broadcast monitor to supply the input on another broadcast monitor? If so would the monitor sending the signal out need to be switched on for the signal to be passed through?
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I'll be using RGB scart for my SNES Mini and Sega Saturn. Component for my PS2 and Wii. And VGA for my Dreamcast.Ed Oscuro wrote:A lot of us in NTSC lands use cables with a European SCART pinout to carry RGB signals. The connector type used is separate (at least practically so, in most cases, absent strange ones like S-Video where NTSC regions used a small round connector, while I understand that many SCART plugs have pins dedicated for S-Video) and so as long as the set actually supports NTSC signals, you just send that RGB signal across it like you would for a PAL console.spaceape wrote:Is NTSC AV cables always the best for use with ones NTSC consoles? Thanks.
So i guess any cable will do just fine then? All my consoles are NTSC. I remember using a PAL SNES RGB Scart for my mini some time ago and it worked no problem. Strange then that http://www.retrogamingcables.co.uk have separate PAL and NTSC SNES cables.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Some consoles have the same AV output pinout in NTSC and PAL countries (Playstation for example) while other systems have slightly different pinouts (Saturn) or different encoder configurations, so the cables require a different configuration (SNES).
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Okay so i guess i need NTSC cables for my Saturn and SNES. What about my Wii? It's the first model with Gamecube compability. I'll get a Sega Genesis and Supergrafx soon too. Will these need NTSC cables as well?Fudoh wrote:Some consoles have the same AV output pinout in NTSC and PAL countries (Playstation for example) while other systems have slightly different pinouts (Saturn) or different encoder configurations, so the cables require a different configuration (SNES).
Thank you.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
NTSC Wiis don't output RGB.
Your SNES Mini has a custom RGB job, so nobody can tell you how it's configured (except the modder).
Supergrafx is a custom job as well.
Genesis doesn't differentiate between PAL and NTSC, but you should get a cable which uses the sync line instead of the composite video line. Will offer better quality.

Oh okay thank you. My Wii will use component. Im thinking component cables are the same for both regions?Fudoh wrote:NTSC Wiis don't output RGB.

Im guessing my mini is modded for NTSC since it's purchased in the US. Supergrafx Is also natively an NTSC console.
Well i'll try getting NTSC cables for it all and see for myself.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
But the SGX doesn't even have a port for RGB output by default, so you will usually get a RGB cable along with it.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
What about something like this. http://tinyurl.com/oxvkrwm Maybe these suck.Fudoh wrote:But the SGX doesn't even have a port for RGB output by default, so you will usually get a RGB cable along with it.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Technically those are fine, nothing but an "external" RGB mod, since RGB is available from the back connector anyway. But do you really want to add another large box to the already massive SGX ? Also you can't use any CD-Rom² add-on when you use this.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Would this setup work: MAME Arcade Games on PC--> Emotia--> UMSA--> Scart Component Adapter (CSY2100 or whatever)--> NTSC TV?
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
should work fine, yes.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
A couple rather OTT questions for Game Boy (Color, specifically) fans:
Are caps often the cause of the Color Game Boy speaker no longer working? Mine hasn't worked in a long while, and today I opened the system up and cleaned it out (mostly the buttons and case, didn't see much reason to mess with other stuff). Didn't check continuity but it looked okay. Still no sound. Last I checked there was sound from the mini headphone connector, which leads me to suspect that the speaker itself died.
Has anybody noted a difference when replacing the GBC speaker with one from a Nintendo DS? Apparently this is possible. Not sure which would be cheaper to get, if I ever decided to go that way.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Greetings!
If you don't mind me asking, I would need some help.
I built a Mega Drive 2 RGB cable following Tim's schematic. I either get no image (using C-Sync) or what I believe are conflicting RGB and composite signals using composite video (as the TV is PAL and the game I was using is NTSC and it only gave color when the region of my console was set to Europe).
Any ideas of what may I be doing wrong?
Thanks...

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Anyone have any good links to resources on building my first shmup joystick? Something that doesn't require too many tools preferably because I'm really lacking in those lol.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
IMO if you don't have that much tools, you probably better off buying a used arcade controller (like Hori Real Arcade Pro's or Mad Catz Street Fighter 4 arcade sticks) and installing seimitsu/sanwa parts in it. But if you're not fazed by your limitations, a great place to start reading up into building arcade controllers is at slagcoin. Tells you must of what you need to know.ExMars wrote:Anyone have any good links to resources on building my first shmup joystick? Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Get the stick and buttons (like* these), PS360+, and I guess precrimped wires to keep it really simple (it'll save you from needing pliers and crimping them yourself)
Then find a cardboard box around the house (I'm serious!), scissors/stabby instrument to make holes for the buttons and stick shaft, and some little nuts and bolts to mount the stick...probably washers too considering the surface.
*need to order a top too.
But yeah I'd suggest just swapping parts out of an existing stick. Prices are inflated on the lower end Mad Catz ones, like I got mine for $30-40 way back but they're going for ~$60 now it seems, but you can use the existing wiring/PCB instead of something like the PS360, unless you want a cross platform stick.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Hey thanks guys. Yeah I can always buy a drill attachment to make circular holes for the buttons or whatever other small tools. The cardboard box idea is great, I could do a mockup and practice so I don't screw up the actual housing. I was reading in another thread that the Sanwa joysticks have too much engage and throw distance, and that Seimitsu ones are better for shmups because the distances are shorter, is that right or is it more complicated than that?
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Some guy named kowal has a bunch of stuff on that in the engage/throw link on this page (among a bunch of other stuff):ExMars wrote:Hey thanks guys. http://www.kowal.itcom.pl/ArcadeParts_pliki/menART.htm
It mostly comes down to personal tastes though, I prefer the smoother feel on Sanwas myself for example. Supposedly this actuator replacement (might have measurements on the other link) cuts the engage and throw down significantly for the Sanwas, and the shape supposedly makes the engage feel more like a Seimitsu. Paradise Arcade has their own actuators but it doesn't seem to cut down on the throw distance much, just the engage.
Another taste thing is the gate, or restrictor plate shape. Slagcoin has a thorough link on that...but it seems to have a subtext hellbent on saying square gates are the best, and I think some of the "facts" and diagrams are wrong and misleading. Anyway the stock gate is square and you can swap in octagonal or circular plates. I use octagonal myself, with my only complaint being that it increases the throws to the cardinal directions (at least on Sanwas, no clue on Seimitsu), basically feels like the same distance to the corners of a square gate. It's the main reason I looked into actuators and found kowal's replacement, although I haven't ordered one yet.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I owned a Saulabi joystick years ago and I remember trying to play some Mega Man with it and hating how far I had to push the thing to get the little guy to move. I'll do some more research but I think I still want to try a Seimitsu and see how that feels. As for the gates I've wouldn't even know what I'd prefer.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Is it worth picking up the official Sony RGB SCART cable for PSX (pretty rare for some reason) if you already have a generic one, i.e. will there be any difference in quality?
edit: nvm, found out all of them are just Japanese RGB-21...

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
So I was reading about spdif modding and I came across this (PSX):
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/digital- ... utput.html
Then I searched some more and figured out that chip might be the cdrom chip which I'm guessing makes it entirely useless for games?
I read a lot about how easy it is to SPDIF mod PSX consoles, but it's pretty poorly documented. Are there any reliable sources? Anyone who does the modding in Europe?

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I bought an Extron Andora I have RGB SCART clean sync (SNES/Neo Geo) connected to the RGBS input. And outputting to a CRT monitor.
While the video quality is good, it puts two frames in one picture, so there's interlacing artifacts when there's motion. I heard that it's supposed to be used with a SLG3000, but wouldn't that halve the framerate? I think I should get an XRGB-1 instead.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Is there any difference in the SD signals on a PS3? For some reason I get the same results by using an official Sony PS3 S-video cable no matter if the console is set to Composite/S-video or RGB scart. Just curious if someone knows anything about this.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
RGB typically will out shine s-video or composite. But that doesn't matter if the TV can/can't handle the video signal properly. I would test it on other TVs if the quality is any different from yours.
