Recommended Anime/Manga?
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Not really anime, but anyone watch No Con Kid?
it's a J-drama about friends told through the history of arcade gaming in Japan..

I have it downloaded, though its not subbed. Like the case for most dramas this year from Japan. Is good?genomcorp wrote:Not really anime, but anyone watch No Con Kid?

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
the overall storyline is a bit cheesy (as many J-dramas are)
but the loads of gaming references and cabs more than make up for it.
i haven't really seen any other shows that completely revolve around arcades/gaming over the long time span that it does..

J-Dramas, Jesus. Do you guys break out the cocoa and knitting tongs for those?
(Actually, anything arcade themed should probably get a pass, even J-Dramas.

watched Gurren Hen - I thought it was great - while of course knowing the series would help, I think it is definitely watchable without. I didn't realise there was so much extra mecha in it too, especially the COmbination of the Four Generals haha.
Watching Lagann Hen now - god I still hate Rossiu...

And it lasted about 1 minute. TTGL is fun as an anime in general, but it falls short in the mecha department IMORaytrace wrote:I didn't realise there was so much extra mecha in it too, especially the COmbination of the Four Generals haha
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
I think the simplistic style suits it, as there is so much movement that I think the clean lines are necessary to know what is going on a lot of the time. And Gurren Lagann himself is a great mecha with his bushido evoking head.Bananamatic wrote:And it lasted about 1 minute. Also as TTGL is so blatantly super roboto, I don't think they could really go into any 'detail' really about each mech as, well it would'nt really work I don't think.
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
why the fuck would they kill off the only likable character 10 seconds in then proceed to replace him with Shinji 2.0. The TV show pissed me off to no end, not to mention it keeps going and going. Felt like a waste of some cool mecha designs and throwbacks to the super robot genre to me.Raytrace wrote:I think the simplistic style suits it, as there is so much movement that I think the clean lines are necessary to know what is going on a lot of the time. Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
ahh now comon - to call Simon 'Shinji 2.0' is a bit unfair, the one time he does go completely whiney is for a legitimate reason, his 'bro' just died!DaneSaga wrote: why the fuck would they kill off the only likable character 10 seconds in then proceed to replace him with Shinji 2.0. But yes it is a bit depress that Kamina goes so early, as he is quite possibly my favourite character in anime, certainly deserves to be up there with the likes of Kouji Kabouto or Harlock anyways.
'Later, buddy..'

:'(
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
I’ll admit Simon sort of mans up the further it goes but he’s still a poor substitute for Kamina. By that time I’d already given about as many shits as I could for the show. Not to mention the anime legends dvd I was watching had heaps of bloody pressing faults so I had to torrent the last half just to finish it. The powers that be did not want me to enjoy TTGL at all me thinks.
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Spoiler
Kamina's dead is so Ashita no Joesque xP
Fuck yay! There's a group scanlating Tsuzuki Sasurai Emanon/Continued Wandering Emanon.
Dat girrrl.

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
The first half of Homunculus is some of the best stuff I've ever read in a manga, but in the second half it just crashes and burns. Seems like he was unable to connect all the ideas and concepts into a meaningful whole.KAI wrote:I'm at Vol.11 of Homunculus right now, it's getting kind of stupid.

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
TTGL felt way too overpowered, nothing even scratched it until the end of the 1st half, Viral became irrelevant in 1 episode, most of its arsenal was ignored in favour of the giga drill breaker(even more so after the time skip), "spiral power" solving every issue ever, etc.Raytrace wrote:I think the simplistic style suits it, as there is so much movement that I think the clean lines are necessary to know what is going on a lot of the time. To be honest many super robot anime do stuff with only the finishers being relevant but the enemies always tend to be relevant and an actual danger - the 4 generals were just complete trash that went on for more than 10 episodes.
Mazinkaiser on the other hand did the whole "overpowered robot the enemy can't beat" thing but the action was actually decent with no plot power like TTGL.
It most likely wasn't really meant to be a 100% mecha show with its wide appeal - kind of like Evangelion, Code Geass or Valvrave

A few recent, but majority old. Basically anything released by streamline pictures back in the late 80's early 90's as well as stuff from u.s. manga corps, central park media, old viz and Pioneer before they became geneon. This is what I consider to be the golden age of anime. I still think it's the best ever made and everything these days pales in comparison. This was all comic book shop stuff. Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Keep forgetting that Gurren Lagann exists. Should probably watch that next. I'm watching .Hack right now, for cris'sakes.
That's the one where people spend all their in a mmo videogame talking about and worrying about some snooty recluse boy and how snooty and reclusive he is. It's like if Shinji showed up for duty and his dad was like "Get in the mech, boy", and then he was like "I can't pilot that thing, I don't have any training and also lack self-confidence" and then the dadder was like "Aw, you make a good point, my precious child. Come to my bosen" but then Shinji pushes him away and runs home to sit in a closet all day and we never get to see giant robots fight anything ever. For 28 episodes.
.. cough.
The world of manga is doing a little bit better. There's this new one called Darwin's Game which is out, which is kind of like DICE: The Cube that Changes Everything but with better production values. The typical but lovable Mysterious Supernatural LARPer Death Game genre. It's tolerable, though things are still in their infancy. Considering what gets an anime adaptation, if it doesn't suddenly cark it there'll probably be one for this thing in four or five years.

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
rewatching Wings Of Honneamise
my god every frame is beautiful - everything the subtle otherworldliness (things like how the white strips on the runway are drawn, or the way glasses are cones put in a placeholder thing).
While I do enjoy the modern I suppose post Nadia stylized style, and really exaggerated in FLCL/Diebuster/TTGL/Kill La Kill (yes I know Kill La Kill isn't exactly Gainax), I still think the old quite realistic style and very well shaded/shadowed art of Gunbuster and Wings Of Honneamise is much more visually pleasant.
As I am useless at remembering the names of ppl involved and their connections to other stuff etc, no matter how many times i read through anipages
, does anyone know whether the change in style (apart from just overall styles changing) was a 'decision' by basically the same staff, or was it that the original staff left etc.?
Basically what I'm wondering is it does look like Blue Uru is finally being made over the next year or so, and I'm wondering will it be even possible for it to look like Wings Of Honneamise (as I believe it is in the same universe) ?
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/20 ... d-for-2014
this image does make it look like they will try the appropriate detail:

- well it certainly doesn't look like Diebuster or Gurren Lagann anyway.

I've got the Honneamise BD on the way. Can't wait to see it in glorious hi-def. I've unfortunately only watched the now ancient Manga DVD.

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
The flying scene is so unbelievably detailed, complex trasnparencies on top of other things!- (the canopy first person bit) similar kindof to those amazing fisheye and photocopied frame bits in Gunbuster. The way the rain moves on the side of the canopy, beautiful parallax backgrounds just at takeoff point, then the clouds themselves, then that little lens flare going around the edge from the nost to the wingtip - just mesmerising.
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Picked up one of my all time fave's in Nozomi's release of Space Adventure Cobra TV series pt 1. Unfortunately I didn't do my research and found out upon arrival that the chipboard artbox that will house both vol 1 & 2 is exclusive to rightstuf.com
serves me right for wanting to save a few bucks.
It's a shame they aren't doing a Blu-ray release but I'm happy just to have a legit copy of the show now.
Also got Lily CAT, Dallos & Casshan along with it.

Yeah, kinda wish Righstuf would have went with the same style as they did with their Dirty Pair and Rose of Versailles sets. The chipboard artbox is nice, but their previous releases came out a bit nicer.DaneSaga wrote:Picked up one of my all time fave's in Nozomi's release of Space Adventure Cobra TV series pt 1. Need to go ahead and get Lily Cat, Dallos & Casshan a well. Excited for all of those releases, even though I kind of think Dallos is just decent, plagued by a confusing finale. Curse being poor!

I like everything you've mentioned, including Kawajiri's segment in Neo Tokyo, but I strongly disagree that the dub is the best version, despite your insistence that it "just is." The original version is fantastic the way it is. Jesus, that dub sounds bloody awful. I can't take it serious. The whole tone is ruined.eatdogs wrote:I forgot to mention a few more

Can't remember what I caught back on Cartoon Network and MTV, but I specifically remember that's where I originally caught Twilight of the Cockroaches. I'd kill for a DVD/BD of that.

It was the first version I saw of it, so that's why I think it's the best ha ha. The original first dub of akira is another example. The Jimmy Flanders version is just a campy classic to me.

Yeah I was really surprised how well it was animated too when I first watched it.
