Holy shit, thank you. I thought it had something to do with holding B while picking Random, but of course that wasn't it and I would get the wrong ship the majority of the time.

Even though this isn't the greatest game, I'm still gonna try to push my score up there, just to see how much that bug can be exploited.

actually, it was suggested on a certain site that you need to hold button 2 when you start the game and let go once you pick the ?, like with raiden fighters. i was never able to get that to work, and the random order is fairly consistent anyway, just have to time it...
