Movies you've just watched

I watched Thief with James Caan. It was pretty good with a nice and gritty feeling. Caan plays a fairly standard toughie role and by he end of the film sorts the bossman out in dramatic fashion.

This is on my list... I think we can get it done before January ends.

The Hunt for Red October -

A 90's take on a fictional 80's event that never happened involving a Russian Soviet built Stealth Sonar "Caterpillar" propelled engined Typhoon Submarine, Captained by Sean Connery and Sam Neil. The movie tends to lean on politics rather than action, but the nail biting duration of this movie puts it a cut above the rest. If you bite your nails, it must be good.

I saw it for the first time myself last year. I thought it was pretty good. Connery plays the world and system weary senior naval guy pretty well. But his Russian had me chuckling.

I am on a bit of a Cold-War film drive myself at present.

I did a quick search. Mostly films from this era were more story driven with fairly well developed characterisation. I am not really one for special-effects and like the more down-to-earth almost documentary style of filming.
If anything comes to mind I will post here.

^ I like that movie too, though on the sub's propulsion technology part the interesting thing I've learned later is that it might not be as much sci-fi as it looks, something called 'MHD' (magnetohydrodynamics) that in theory could apply to many other fields and for which research supposedly has stopped...or is actually a thing and so effective that it's been held in absolute secrecy for decades from all countries that could somehow afford it.
If you read about it and what it could possibly do it's quite stunning and scary.

As a general rule the theory and application tends to be seperated but most of the time certain industries and sectors get it first. The military are better funded than most and to a real extent get the money for the research.

I always find that the line between 'SciFi' and today is just a matter of time but I am hopeful

Some Special effects are a bit dated and there is definitely some iffy camera work in places. I can imagine what it would have been like lugging huge cameras over a submarine which is out to sea with blistering winds (It looks like a few shots used real navy hardware).

John McTiernan directed this, and rarely does anyone mention his name with this film. However, I've not seen this film being mentioned since the 90's. If you haven't seen it, go watch it.

I have been a fan of Pacino's for some time now and he always turns out a good performance.

there's one funny thing about Harrison Ford..his acting is weird in this movie lol..

Dragnet (1987): **1/2

A film that simultaneously serves as both homage to and parody of the 50s and 60s radio and TV series, with Dan Aykroyd as the overly strait-laced Joe Friday (allegedly a nephew of the original Jack Webb character) and Tom Hanks as the infuriating new partner, with Harry Morgan reprising his original role as Bill Gannon, now their captain and somehow not looking any older than he did on the original show. I watched the 60s TV show on Nick at Nite quite a bit back when they had it on, and to me the movie played up the Joe Friday character a bit too much. It probably would have made a better drama than a comedy, and I normally like these types of movies.

I liked the cleaned up picture but I didn't really like the changes to the final cut. Especially the awkwardly ADR'ed lines immediately following the head crush. How stupid do you think your audience is, Ridley, that you didn't think we could figure out what happens to JF Sebastian? I also prefer the line "I want life... fucker!"

Not a movie, but I just got done binging Stranger Things. Really enjoyed it. It's like a mash-up of Twin Peaks and Silent Hill as interpreted by an E.T.-era Spielberg or a Goonies-era Donner, with Guillermo del Toro stepping in for the spooky bits. And that synthwave title track is so damn authentic.

It's not a 70's film, but check out 'The Lives of Others'.

Same, those changes didn't sit right with me at all.

The "father" line sits right with me, since it's a line recovered from the Workprint, which is the original cut of the film. The "fucker" was dubbed in for the commercial release inexplicably, since "Father" is completely appropriate considering the context.

A great wealth of additions and changes in the Final Cut come from the recovered workprint, from the more vibrant colours, to the added violence, and even the hockey mask Geisha girls.

All I can say is that's the most massive and obscene orgy of high-quality computer generated contents I have ever seen. (Pirates of the Caribbean series coming close)

Don't get me wrong, in many places it looks really gorgeous, even more so than the LotR trilogy.

But as a film it is so empty, there's hardly anything to talk about, just entertainment, the first two parts felt okay because of the journey, the dragon and all, but the finale is just a never-ending action flick not even the expensive CGI manage to save from flat-out boring mediocrity.

PS: oh yes almost forgot the musical moments...I fucking hate those to death in any film/cartoon. Argh. Just skipped.

Amazing, as I'm sure everyone here knows. Not my first time to see it, but I definitely waited far too long. Ambitious camera work like this goes far too unnoticed. Not only inspires me to be a better photog, but to be more like Clive Owen as I age.

Another rewatch. Hadn't seen it in a while. Very entertaining. God bless Heather Graham and her amazing tits. I miss bell bottoms and funky clothes. The lumberjack and skinny pants shit needs to go.

Terrible, extremely terrible. Characters had no logical motivations, the flashback sequence was so overused... Even the drawn out chase scene at the end felt disjointed and without purpose. This one is much worse than the Bourne Legacy, which is saying a lot. What a disappointment, coming from a fan of the first three Bourne movies

I didn't like Kung Fury. The good thing about Stranger Things and Turbo Kid is they're fully functional movies in their own right even if you took out all the 80s fanservice. Kung Fury was literally nothing but fanservice and past the first five minutes it really wore out its welcome.

Would have helped if the director didn't cheat, though i guess the cuts weren't really noticeable.

"I" of course did not like the film. Interesting visuals and camera techniques aside, i wasn't taken by either the story or the characters, and i felt the movie ended in a whimper.
