4th Annual Top 25 Shmups of All Time! - Polls Closed
And now, it's time for... 5 or 6 baritone solos in the key of E? Nope, it's the 4th Annual Top 25 Shmups of All Time poll.
I've volunteered to take this over from nullstar, and it's going to work pretty much the same way it did last year. Thusly I'm just going to totally rip off nullstar's rules post from last year.
Polls Close April 1! (Results expected by May 1.)
What's New?!
(List may include console ports of games that had original arcade releases in 2004.)
Espgaluda II
Gunroar
Homura
Ibara
Mushihimesama
Nanostray
Radilgy
Raiden III
Trizeal
Twinkle Star Sprites: La Petite Princesse
Under Defeat
And a host of others I've probably forgotten about.
Also, "Tube shooters" (a la Gyruss or Tempest) will be allowed this year.
RULES:
00) If you haven't participated before, read the background section (below) before proceeding any further.
01) Vote for the 25 shmups you feel are the "top" of all time. (What constitutes top is up to you: best, favorite, most influential, most significant, mix-and-match, etc.)
02) For each shmup, allocate an integer number of points. The points you assign will help compensate for, say, games that fewer people vote for but feel much more strongly about than others they vote for.)
03) Shmups released in calendar year 2006 are not eligible for consideration.
04) Don't Vote for Games You Haven't Played! Hopefully that was self-evident...
05) Distinguish between games on compilations! (e.g. Zanac X Zanac and is not something you can vote for -- it's the name of the compilation, not a game.)
06) Specify when different games share the same title. (We're not talking about ports here -- stuff like U.N. Squadron: the SNES game and arcade game are so different we consider them separately; Gradius III SNES and arcade is another good example.) If you intend to vote for a game titled "Salamander" or "Life Force", for the love of Schirach be as specific as possible as to which format and region you're voting for.
07) No Borderliners! Stuff that's off-limits generally include: "run-and-gun" (think Contra or Mercs); arena shooters (Robotron, Smash TV, etc.); on-rails/into-the-screen shooters (Rez, Panzer Dragoon, Space Harrier, etc.). Stuff like Space Invaders and Galaga are OK.
08) Can't come up with 25? Make sure you've read the background section and still want to vote. That said: you are free to vote for fewer than 25 games, but realize that your votes will receive a smaller pie than people who vote for the full 25 games.
09) Can't limit yourself to 25? Not a problem! You can vote for 26, 27, 30, 50, 100, etc. games. But you don't get a bigger pie, so each additional game you vote for is one more game diminishing the weight of all the other games you vote for. It's up to you, but we would recommend you not dilute your vote by -- at most -- a handful of additional games.
10) USE THE VOTE FORMAT!!!!! As stated, we're trying to automate data entry, so see the Vote Format section...
Vote Format:
Votes need to be in the following format:
- one game per line
- first thing on line: the integer score to assign to the game, in brackets
- second thing on line: a space
- final thing on line before hitting enter: name of the game, in brackets
Some Examples:
[42] [Brilliant Bronzerifle]
[23] [Gradius MCMVII]
[16] [Cosmos Field]
[15] [DoReMiPachi]
[8] [1914]
[4] [Super Robo Aleste II Turbo]
BACKGROUND:
Historically, informal "top 10" shmup lists showed up on the forum with a frequency only eclipsed by the age-old questions of "Thunderforce V: PSX or Saturn?!" and "which Dreamcast shmups to buy?!" But a lot of people felt 10 was just too short a list to even begin to list the best of the best shmups...so the annual top 25 got started three years ago. It helps reduce the frequency of informal polls; it gives people a bit more choice in what to include on their list; and most importantly: it helps provides everyone an annual snapshot of what the forum's widely and deeply experienced players collectively felt was "basic background" for any serious (or aspiring) shmupper. (By the way: it's still OK to run informal top 10s...)
So what constitutes "widely and deeply experienced"? That's impossible to truly quantify, but as a general guideline: voters should be familiar with nearly all (95+%) of the games on previous years' top 25 lists. Furthermore, they should be equally familiar with nearly as many (90+%) of the shmups on previous years' honorable mention lists. And, to the extent that other games voters have listed are available, would-be voters should be familiar with 50%-65+% of those games, as well.
And what constitutes "familiar"? Basically, having played it enough to understand the gameplay mechanisms that make it unique, and/or fun and/or historically important and/or any number of other things you might take as helping define "top."
So this is just for the old and decrepit? The intent is not to make voting for a top 25 some elitist function; at the same time, the value of such a list is diminished as those lacking adequate experience participate in the voting process. Scoring mechanisms are in place to try and counteract this somewhat, but this is by no means a perfect system. Meeting the guidelines listed here will go a long way to helping ensure that the results of such votes can be trusted, and that those new to the genre and/or voting process have concrete goals that will go a long way to producing better participation and more accurate results in future years. (Even in the past couple years a number of forum members have used the results of the Top 25 poll to guide where they spend time and money as they become more familiar with the genre.)
Is this perfect? By no means -- but it's a bit of fun, helps spark some discussion, and helps provide some direction of the genres core experiences.

The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

Another year, another list... I think this gets harder every year
[500] [Raiden DX]
[50] [Axelay]
[50] [Raiden]
[50] [Soldier Blade]
[50] [Thunder Force AC]
[15] [Border Down]
[15] [DoDonPachi]

[15] [ESPGaluda]
[15] [Giga Wing 2]
[15] [Gleylancer]
[15] [Ikaruga]
[15] [Psyvariar 2]
[15] [Raiden III]
[15] [Raiden Fighters]
[15] [RayCrisis]
[15] [Sonic Wings Special]
[15] [Soukyugurentai]
[15] [Strikers 1945 II]
[15] [Thunder Force V]
[15] [Trizeal]
[15] [Twin Cobra]
[15] [UN Squadron (Arcade)]
[15] [Viper Phase 1]
[15] [Zero Gunner 2]
These lists always seem a little alphabetically biased. I think I may have put less effort into actually ranking them this year, oh well.

I´ve been waiting eagerly for this vote, but now I find it harder than ever, because the criteria get mixed up all the time. I´ve tried to incorporate innovative/unique factor, influential factor (already contradicting slightly), but of course also overall quality, subjective fun, and many times these factors didn´t only influence the points each game got, but also the choice which games to include in the vote at all. Recently, I´ve been out of the loop a little, didn´t play Ibara, Under Defeat, Homura or Radirugy. So I considered reducing my number of votes, but given the underwhelming effect most new shmups have had on me for the last few years, I don´t expect any of these titles to have an influence on my votes, therefore I kept it at 25.
