the best players on shmups.system11.org are....
How can we figure this out? Is this a horrible idea? I think that a variety of things would have to be taken in consideration, both total number of high scores and 1CC's, and also number of first place scores or even western records... Maybe we can just start tossing names around and figure out the logistics later.
Regardless of who makes the list, I think the best players here should be recognized.

I'm not sure you are serious (you usually aren't), but a 1CC of Dimahoo, Pink Sweets, or Image Fight means nothing? How about a 1CC (2-All) of Gradius 4 or Gunbird 2? Even with a low score these clears have to be taken in consideration.KAI wrote:1CCs don't count.

I'm going to update the first post with any/all nominations.
Adding Plasmo and Zeron (though I'd still like to see some provenance of his Dimahoo clear)

Also some of the fans of Raiden/"older" style games, especially Toaplan, don't seem well represented here yet, just to throw some names off the top of my head, people (perhaps not active at the moment) like Twiddle and Mills.

KAI is right, 1CCs don't matter when you want to list the best players. Scores are what matter the most. Then there's talent; some players can just kill games within a few days of play while most good players have to play a lot to get the same results.
I'd say the Touhou is Harder crew (Sapz, Naut, Erppo, ResumeD, Jaimers), Gus, Plasmo, Sikraiken, Prometheus, Third Strike, abschüssig, Iconoclast, x91, MrMonkeyman and Saucykobold are overall the best. I'm forgetting some probably.

Re: the best players on shmups.system11.org are....
I understand, but think about a situation like this:1CCs don't matter when you want to list the best players. Scores are what matter the most.
Player A: Attempts to clear X games and is able to 1CC them all within a week getting an average score. No replays or save-states are used in the process.
Player B: Attempts to high score in one of those games, spends 3 years with heavy use of replay and save-states and eventually gets a top score.
So why would Player B be the better player? I'm not discrediting Player B, but I do feel that Player A might be better overall.
[edit]
Also, how about players who can 1CC a wide variety of games including Konami, Raizing, Cave, etc, versus "one trick pony" players who focus entirely on just a couple of cave games and don't actually play anything else. There is no true way to measure skill, but I think the well rounded players deserve credit too.

We don't, but I have 2 reasons why I feel like it is a good idea. One is simply to honor them, just as we (usually) honor the best games in the genre by having a yearly vote. The other is to discuss "what makes a player great". Is it the western record on one or two games? Is it to have the skills to clear games in as few runs as possible without studying replays and using save-states? Is it to have good scores in a variety of games ranging from hori's to danmaku? I think each of these categories plays a part, and maybe some of the best players can share some stories about the road to the top.RGC wrote:Why do we need to? Re: the best players on shmups.system11.org are....
I think it should be renamed. There's just no way to nominate "best player", but we could however nominate the most impressive player for 2012, for example. Sikraiken might be the best player, but he isn't exactly impressing anyone as he doesn't show any of his plays to anyone. It is quite easy and possible to give votes to a player who has shown something impressive this year. Voting for "best" is just stupid as there are no metrics to prove anyone better than someone else.

Yeah I agree, I wasn't intending to hold a vote for number 1, hence "players"Voting for "best" is just stupid as there are no metrics to prove anyone better than someone else.

Re: the best players on shmups.system11.org are....
I think it would be great way to improve the community by voting for the player (just one) of the year, at the end of every year. It would kinda work the same way as voting for the athlete of the year works in a lot of countries. You do impressive stuff throughout the year and at the end of the year the community votes for their favorite. Then the votes are arranged to list the most impressive players for the year.chempop wrote: Yeah I agree, I wasn't intending to hold a vote for number 1, hence "players"
It would create a drive for people to do better and show their plays (instead of just posting scores). The voting page should list those achievements and some video links to make it easier for the voters to decide.

Oooo I like that idea! Like a yearly award ceremony, yes, let's do it. Probably best to start another thread, but I don't mind ideas starting here either.
Maybe categories can include:
Best Overall of year
Most improved player
Most valuable contributor
...heck, I wouldn't even be opposed to a:

This thread is BS
In shmups, what do you do when you die or 1CC? You put your score, along with three initials, on the high score board. We have high score threads here, what more is needed? Nothing. This is auto-felatio.
