RQ: Super Spacefortress Macross II - What am I doing wrong?

I can clear the first two stages easily, but falter on the third, by more than 100,000. I try to stay as the fighter the entire time to garner the same-ship bonus, and do the same with the sub-weapon, and I collect all the medals. What is wrong with this picture? Is there some hidden scoring technique I'm not aware of?

Never mind. Mame playbacks work wonders in shwoing scoring bonuses.
