STGT 2008 - Week #5 Voting (Famous Manic Week)

Post by sikraiken »

PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE POST

PLAY ALL THE GAMES FIRST BEFORE VOTING.

Make sure you are using the correct romset and settings for each game!

The Voting deadline for Week #5 is Monday, October 20th at 12:00am midnight EST (4AM GMT).
http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/

Voting is completely private. Here's what you need to do.

Send an e-mail to [email protected] with the following required things:
- Your forum name
- What game you are voting for
(If you do not include both of these things, your vote will not be counted).

While this is not required, please also add:
- WHY you are voting for the game you are voting for (your reason will not change the qualification of your vote, I'm just interested in seeing why people are voting for the game they choose. "I like this game" is not a reason, you can do better than that. "I like/chose this game because..." If you have trouble writing english, feel free to write in your native language.)

After you have sent your vote, you may not change your vote. You do not have to vote if you do not want to. You may not vote for other players (this also includes team mates). Your vote only counts if you send it to the e-mail address above. You must be part of STGT2008 to participate in voting. DO NOT PM me your votes.

I will be checking the votes two hours before the deadline. I will not be opening the e-mail account and looking at the votes before then. If there happens to be a tie (or one vote difference) at that point when I check them, I will announce that and extend the voting period for two more hours, allowing anyone who has not voted to have a chance to vote. I will not announce what games they are. Once there is a clear winner, the game will be announced.

Thread discussion:

DO NOT:
-Do not talk about what game(s) you are going to vote for or game(s) you are not going to vote for in this thread.
-Do not talk about what game(s) you might vote for in this thread.
-DO NOT STATE YOUR VOTE IN THIS THREAD.
(I hope this makes it clear what you should NOT talk about in this thread).

DO:
-Do ask questions about voting in general.
-Do ask questions you have about any of the games ("Why does this game suck?" is not an acceptable question, however.)
-Do ask any questions you have about the tournament.
-Do discuss anything that doesn't have to do with liking/disliking one of the game selections.
-Feel free to talk about your votes with your team outside of this thread (outside of this board).

Game Selection:

I don't believe I can do each game justice in describing how to approach it for scoring so I've linked to threads that will hopefully give you an idea of what you need to be doing. Just ask anything you're curious about in this thread otherwise; someone will answer your question.

Battle Garegga (JAPAN REGION) -8ing/Raizing-

Image

Make sure you are using the correct romset and settings

If you are using MAME .117u1 or after, then you'll need to use the bgaregga romset. If you are using a MAME version before .117u1, you'll need to use the battlega romset (which means you'll have to get both battleg and battlega).

Quoting Icarus:
"Sega Saturn players don't need to mess with the options screen as the game defaults to this Extend setting automatically. However, MAME players will need to get both battleg (Garegga parent set) and battlega (Asian territories set) [or just bgaregga if you're using .117u1 and on]. Load battlega [or bgaregga] in MAME, and when the game appears, press the TAB button, and negotiate to the Dipswitches menu. From here, change the Region to JAPAN, and the Bonus Lives option to [Every 1000k], then reset the emulation via the main TAB menu ['reset game', or hit F3 or close out and reopen should work as well].

When the game reloads itself, check the copyright screen. If it says "This game is only for use in NIPPON..." then the Region setting changes have worked. Then wait until the title screen appears, and see if it says "1,000,000 Per Extend" at the bottom. If it does, then you're all set!"

Zakk made some rom patches (IPS) to stop the rank from changing after each play as well as making the secret ships always unlocked. Without it, you can always reset rank by restarting the game (hitting F3, exiting out, etc), but the ships need to be unlocked each game.

Progear no Arashi (JAPAN) -Cave-

Image

Make sure you are using the correct romset and settings

You'll need both progear and progearj, we'll be playing progearj. Default game settings. Pretty straightforward.

I believe the loop requirements are bomb 2 times or less, or have your # of bombs used + your number of lives lost equal to or less than 7.

Raiden Fighters Jet (US version) -Seibu Kaihatsu-

Image

Make sure you are using the correct romset and settings

You will need to get both rfjet and rfjetu, we'll be playing rfjetu. Default game settings.

For the timer, wait until counter goes down to 000, then press tab, go under dip switches, set JP1 dipswitch to ON and reset MAME.

If you don't want to deal with the wait time, extract this file and put it in your nvram folder. I made it in .99 and tested it in .127, so it should work fine: http://beatthegame.net/stgt2008/rfjnv.zip

(I think wolfmame stopped using nvram by default after .99 or a couple versions after. I made the file with wolfmame .99 but tested it in regular mame .127.)

To use the Slave or Fairy ship, insert your credit, hold bomb, press start to start the game, then release bomb. Select Miclus to use the Fairy, or select any other ship to use Slave. Different ships give Slave different properties

Can we use the 360 version of RFJ on Raiden Fighters Aces? I know there's an option to change Raiden Fighters to Gundogs, which I had assumed to be the US version. Is that correct or am I horribly confused? :?

Question... what settings would RFJ in Raiden Fighters Aces need to be set to in order to match the US ROM set?

According to sht_ycw79 the default settings are easier than the standard PCB difficulty. I've no idea if upping the default will get an accurate emulation of the normal arcade settings.

The default for all of the games is Normal difficulty. Moving it up one notch sets it to Arcade. But what are the major changes between the Japanese and US ROM sets though?

Regional Differences (copied from the strategy thread)

Japan
-highest rank cap (100%)
-default rank speed
-requires BOTH slaves to be suicided to reduce rank temporarily
-2 seconds to reveal a Miclus
-one loop, with an Expert Course unlocked with a one-credit ALL3

US
-high rank cap (~90%)
-higher rank speed
-requires one slave to be suicided for temporary rank decrease
-0.3 seconds to reveal a Miclus
-two loops, second loop has really slow suicide bullets

Asia
-default rank cap (PCB) or low rank cap (emulated)
-default rank speed (PCB) or lower rank speed (emulated)
-requires one slave to be suicided for temporary rank decrease
-2 seconds to reveal a Miclus
-two loops, second loop has really slow suicide bullets

I think Twiddle might own the 360 version, or at least know more about it, so whenever he's around I'm sure he'll comment.

Hey I've heard some people want to vote [BATTLE BALLS] because they think [KURU KURU KURURIN] has no chance this week and [BATTLE BALLS] has a higher chance to beat out [UO POKO]. That's a crappy line of reasoning, [BATTLE BALLS] couldn't even beat out [ZERO TEAM] in a developer week so what chance does it have against [UO POKO]?

[KURU KURU KURURIN] is clearly the best game and was followed up by [KURURIN PARADISE] which ups the pace and then [KURURIN SQUASH] which has a crappy new graphics style and mechanics changes. [KURU KURU KURURIN] was inspired by the earlier [THE IRRITATING MAZE] and then heavily refined to be way better and that's why it deserves your vote.

Kuru Kuru Kururin is better than the other two games because it doesn't give you blue balls. Instead you have a nice long stick and put it in the goal.

Racism in video games = not protection the houses (ok that's RF1 but u gets the meaning)

Man...oh...man, which game to choose?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!11

Twiddle I think we will have to think long and hard about this one.

(No speculations about where our team will place this week, assuming we get the right game.)

Has anyone gotten rfjet to work on a PPC Mac?

I've tried MacMAME, MAME OS X, and sdlmame, and they all crash with the message "i386: Invalid opcode FF at [...]". By now I'm assuming it's an endianness problem in the MAME core that I won't be able to fix by monkeying with settings or alternate versions, but if there's a way around it I'd love to hear how.

Aru-san: Alright, I will. :)

About the 360 version: If it's possible to get it like the US version (two loops and all the other stuff) as well as the same difficulty as PCB/MAME, then it can be allowed. I'll look into it but I don't know if I'll find much. If someone who owns the game can verify that it would be fine then that'd be great.

Bit early for this, isn't it? Don't usually see the voting thread until Friday.
(Ack, I must be drunk, took me five minutes to type this. Self-correction inculded.)

PS: Japanese version of all selected games, please. Just for consistency.

Learning is hard (see last 4 weeks), so RFJ gets US version for extremely shortened miclus timer.

Audio emulation of the SPI system isn't perfect (it runs a bit slower than usual) , but gameplay-wise it is fine.
