Gyrostarr - Tube shooter on Wiiware this week
Looks a lot like Torus Trooper. Anyone try it yet? I'm not sure if I should get this or not. Videos make it look too easy, hardly any bullets or anything.

The videos are right, it's quite easy and there are hardly any bullets or enemies. I had a hard time giving this game even 10 minutes of my time and I want them back. I found the gameplay to be extremely slow and boring, although not as bad as Protothea. If I were you I wouldn't waste my time with this.kengou wrote:Videos make it look too easy, hardly any bullets or anything.

Thanks. It's a shame, before Wiiware launched I was really excited for the shmups like Star Soldier R and Gyrostarr, and then Star Soldier ended up being 5 minutes long and Gyrostarr apparently sucks.
Maybe I'll just pick up Blast Works.

Yeah, shit sucks. Even worse than Ikaruga (25 minutes! You have to be fucking kidding me!). Fuck shooting games. All you need to do to win is keep continuing and you'll be done in less time than it takes to watch an episode of Friends. Give me Oblivion any day. Since it takes about 200 hours to finish, it automatically makes it 1200x better then Star Soldier.kengou wrote: Star Soldier ended up being 5 minutes long

Heh, that's not my point at all. I'm just not down with the whole 5-minute time based scoring run thing. I don't think I'd enjoy the game unless it has an amazing scoring system (which it looks to me like it doesn't).MX7 wrote:Yeah, shit sucks. Even worse than Ikaruga (25 minutes! If it was $10 for 5 minutes of ESPGaluda, I might think differently, but as it is, Star Soldier R seems meh. I'd be much more likely to get it if it were indeed a full 25-30 minute, 5-7 level shmup. I mean I already have Soldier Blade on the VC.

But... it's 8 dollars. For a brand new game. With some of the tightest caravan stages since Final Soldier's. There hasn't been a decent full campaign in a Star Soldier since Super Star Soldier. Anyone who plays shooters for real, plays these games for the caravan modes.
I've put like eight hours into Star Soldier R. You'll get out of it what you put into it.
EDIT: Just read kengou's response, doesn't sound like you are the caravan type, which is fine. I was just fed up with people insisting on a full mode when caravan is obviously what Hudson does best. I would argue that it's a great scoring system, but if you don't like caravan style in the PCE games you won't like it here.

Or, they coulda done the far more obvious thing with Star Soldier R, made a shmup AND included the caravan mode.....
I dont mind caravan modes too much myself, but I dont do them much.
If I had extra Wii points I didnt need, I might pick this up, but otherwise.... meh.
Unfortunately,
It looks like so far, the actual GOOD shmups available for the Wii that arent VC, are all full retail titles.... I have Shiki 3 and Blast Works and am very happy with both.
And yeah, looked at this Gyrostar. Doesnt look very good.
But then, that's about what I'd expect from a Wiiware shmuppy game. A shmup designed to be "accessible".... *cough* .... for Nintendo's usual audience these days.
Honestly, Im not expecting any good shmups on Wiiware anytime soon, period.

For Star Soldier fans, I think the full campaign modes have seemed kind of superfluous for a while now, especially since entries like the N64 game. I think the developers realized this and put all their effort into the caravan mode. For the SS games, I'd beat the normal mode and never come back to it. What kept me coming back was the caravan modes. If you ask me, caravan modes are the best way to do scoring games designed for a home console anyways. Toru Iwagani seemed to think so too, looking at Pac-Man CE. A lot of people approach this game with the totally wrong viewpoint, or have a rudimentary knowledge of what makes these games fun in the first place. High Voltage software obviously is clueless.-Bridget- wrote:Or, they coulda done the far more obvious thing with Star Soldier R, made a shmup AND included the caravan mode.....

Well, I admit I havent actually tried out that particular game yet.
The Wiiware games I bought were MLAAK, and Dr. Mario so far, which took precedence (and I dont regret this decision whatsoever).
If I pick up some more points soon (which I should), I really might get Star Soldier, but Im sorta on the fence about it.
From what I saw, well, I dunno...... firstly, I am of course used to shmups that throw 10 bazillionty things at me.... but most of all, what of the scoring system? It looked too much like "Blow stuff up and find hidden items" to me.
And it still sorta seems to me there should have been at least SOME more content to this.
It's that scoring system though, whatever exactly it really is, that'll end up deciding this one for me.
That comparison to Pac-Man CE made me rethink the whole thing on Caravan modes a bit...... being that CE is one of the single most brilliant games I have ever played in my life PERIOD.

Pac-Man CE comes from a different place, though. It's an expansion of the original series - lots more screens, more thought in the scoring mechanism, just generally more of everything that made the original great. Whereas Star Soldier R has less content than the rest of its series.
For the record, I actually really like SSR and I'm not hating on it for the amount of content it provides, especially given its price. It's just that downloading and playing P-MCE, I felt like I got far more than I'd presumed I'd be getting, whereas with SSR I was a little bit shocked to find that stuff that I'd expected to be present was missing.
