I thought there was hope when they mentioned R-Type. But then they tacked on SUPER...

ha my thoughts exactly

I tried out U.N Squadron awhile ago, it wasn't as fun as most of those games on the list to me.

Come on, write them some emails and demand Radiant Silvergun/Battle Garegga/Ketsui to be top on the list. Because as everyone knows, Screwattack is known for their highly objective, well-balanced and official top ten lists.

I mean really, I was surprised when they showed DOJ for some seconds, which is more than I ever expected from a (hint!) COMEDY WEBSITE.

Though the list is pretty crap, I laughed at the bit about 1943's near death music.

What a surprise, another 'top' shooter list by a western group and no one is happy with it. I'm not really surprised by the list content (since these guys generally are console based) although it notes an interesting trend with these guys: recognizing consoles of the SNES era and older and basically anything that is within the previous generation and newer. Just my hunch. It was nice to see Axelay in there, although again it's too bad they miss R Types in favour of Super R Type.

Personally, I think UN Squadron's Stage 1 music is good enough reason to have it on there. Take that Ikaruga...

They weren't varied enough...U.N. Squadron? Hmph...to each his own.

Haven't they ever played imports?

No Souky?

No Silvergun?

No Layer Section? Ok...Galactic Attack.

This list was very Nintendo-console-centric.

To be fair, these are probably about the only shooters that most of their audience has heard of.

Though, funnily enough, their "I like to be able to move in my shooters" complaint with DOJ in the background has been voiced by people around here.

I am watching it now, but the streaming is kinda sucky.. I am at number 9 now.

Raptor? Goddamn, if they were going to include a PC shmup, they should researched a little more. Is there anyone on earth that will actually say Raptor is better than Tyrian? I am no fan of Tyrian either, but I think it's a PC shmup as well known as Raptor, and a lot better.

And there are at least 2 versions of Xevious better than the NES one, but I wouldn't expect them to know it....

Yeah. Touhou maybe? They may not be to everyones tastes, but they're pretty well-known and certainly better than Raptor. Hell, Raiden 2 on pc is better than Raptor. (And i really really hate Raiden 2)

That list isn't half bad. Raptor is completely out of place and U.N. Squadron above Ikaruga and Gradius 5 is LOL. Super R-Type could had been R-Type 3, if they wanted to keep it with SNES games only.

But besides Raptor, there's nothing really offensive on the list... shame they wanted to keep it too much oldschool either to look cool or for not having the slightest idea.

EDIT: we once had our own top 10

while a better list I just can't believe they don't include games like Gradius V or Ikaruga. I mean, there's no way in hell Defender is a better side-scroller than Gradius V. Seriously.

Yeah, don't really expect the guys at Screwattack to make a list that takes in account for all the shit that's out there. But, yeah, homage to shmups is cool in my book. Entertaining, as usual. I laughed when U.N. Squadron was #1. Hell, it's #1 in my book, as a western shmup gamer. That game pretty much was my first shmup love, and I think many other western gamers may feel the same way, at least the ones that grew up with the SNES era such as myself. Just a hunch... but U.N Squadron is pretty kickass.

Good thing we have a top 25 now. That doesn't look like some guy's random nostalgic favorites, like Axelay and Soldier Blade.

Area 88 as #1? They must be joking. There're loads of more impressive shmups, not to say almost any is more impressive -_-
Of course, it has its fascination, but goddamn... they must be incredible noobs to tell a shit about Asteroids, Raptor and stuff while being calm about the Toaplans, Caves and Raizings. -_-
Although if they meant only US-releases, there was also Einhaender and Mars Matrix needed to mention.

if I remember correctly, there was some forum input for that feature.

When I begun posting on this forum, Soldier Blade was really VERY high regarded... everyone was acting like it was the second incoming or something.
