RQ: Hyper Duel 1UP item

Post by CIT »

Anybody know how to get the 1UP item in stage 5?

Supposedly you have to shoot the containers open, while not destroying them and eventually one of them will drop the 1UP, or something. I've never been able to pull it off though. :?

Any tips are welcome.

Bumping this ancient thread because I'm stumped too.

GCMatome (a Japanese wiki detailing the reception and triva of video games) claims that you can get an 1up if you get one of the containers in stage to spawn 6 items and that you can mine up to three extends by optimizing your pattern but for the life of me I cannot get an 1up to spawn at all. This is both on the arcade and Saturn arrange. None of the 1cc videos on Youtube or Nicovideo manage to obtain the item either. If someone on here ever managed to trigger the elusive collectable 1up, I'm very curious to know what technique was used.

That website simply states that you can get the score extend at 1.5mil already in stage 5 if you milk the containers well enough for blue capsules. There is no collectable 1up item (and the Japanese website doesn't mention such thing either).

You can find a handful of replays achieving 1.5mil in stage 5 on the shmups wiki's video index.

That website simply states that you can get the score extend at 1.5mil
It states that it has two score-based extends and then elaborate in a footnote that (supposedly) there is an 1-up item that can be collected in the bonus stage.
エクステンドは50万と150万、そして5面でチャンスがある*2。

Extend offers chances at 500,000 and 1,500,000 points, and on Stage 5*2.

*2 コンテナを破壊した際に出るアイテムが6つ目で出る。うまくやればこのステージで三機ほどエクステンドも可能だが、出すには少々コツがいる

The sixth item appears when you destroy the container. With skill, you can get about three extends on this stage, but it takes a bit of practice to pull off.
If it was just saying that the bonus stage is a good spot to earn the extends, it wouldn't mention that you can get three extends there, because there are only two score-based extends.

Further validating this is that I found a scan of the Saturn manual on the Internet Archive, and whadaya know, it includes a picture for an 1-up item!

The entire site doesn't mention the 1-Up item anywhere (or have I missed it?!) but the footnote (probably?) still implies it with the 3 extends gained from stage 5. It's pretty strange wording which only tells me that the author of the page doesn't know how to get it. Maybe.

I can't contribute anything worthwhile in regard to getting the item, but I've found another website stating the following:
The last sentence here is the most important maybe. However that item may be triggered, fortunately it's not really needed.

So using the tip you found, I had another crack at it and I can confirm that the sprite...

the legend...

the collectable...

the 1-Up item...

IT EXISTS (this is in Saturn arrange)

As the Japanese webpage says, your best is to try and use your robot mode and aim for the containers that spawn at the lower right. However the timing is very tricky, because if you hold on too long, your robot's mode missiles are liable to destroy the containers after they've cracked.

While this is indeed suboptimal for scoring (since the game doesn't award a bonus for remaining 1-ups) and not really worth aiming for in arcade mode since it's more forgiving than your usual arcade shmup, mastering the trick would be quite helpful for a Saturn arrange clear on account of how much tougher it is. Nonetheless I am satisfied.
