What's your favorite Shmup OST?

Post by HeLGeN-X »

I'm sorry, but playing shmups since Famicom, I have to say Mushihimesama.

The music is sooooooooo good, that I'm not even some type of game/anime geek, but I play it on my headphones and they're loud as hell because I also produce music, so like when I'm on the train, I try to make other people hear it in NYC LOL, I love it that much.

I also love Giga Wings, but only for the game, I don't want the OST, but I think the mushi OST is off the hook!I especially like the last stages song, that's my absolutely favorite game song right now.

I like Darius gaiden, Ibara, and Psyvariar 2.

The Star Soldier remake also has a nice old-school feel to it.

Ikaruga is great but really shines when you see how it synchs to the action on screen.

Mushi's soundtrack is one of my favorites too...I'd probably put Radiant Silvergun and Battle Garegga in the same league as far as the music goes. There are other games whose music I like, though the 3 I mentioned are probably my favorites overall.

The DoDonPachi soundtrack gets me sooo damn pumped. I put it on my PSP to listen to in the car. The first/fourth stage track has such an odd melody but it works amazingly. Who cares they didn't do a track per stage, not like these aren't the best three songs ever!

The Radiant Silvergun soundtrack is also important because it's enjoyable even for someone who hasn't played the game.

Imperishable Night. I don't know why, that cheesy ass synth stuff just gets to me. It's like the epitome of game music, only all wacked out on pixie stix.

I'd have to say Thunder Force IV, Thunder Force III, Darius, Elemental Master and Lords of Thunder (Sega CD) are among my favorites.

Psyvariar 2. That style of techno generally isn't my thing, but it's a huge guilty pleasure of mine.

Great soundtrack, never thought of it as a shooter though.
Forgot about Tamayo Kawamoto's works also, Raystorm has a fantastic score.

U.N. Squadron: Yay, SNES guitar. I'm more fond of the SNES soundtrack over the Arcade, however. 's got some rockin' and fairly memorable tunes.

Gradius III

It's a fun one.

Generally, shmups have horrible music, so I really notice when it's something special. Esprade has a great main theme, and Ikaruga has a fantastic soundtrack. But i'd never buy the OST for either, since you hear the music so much while playing.

At the moment, the soundtrack I despise/love the most is Shikgami no Shiro 2. The first track 'Flying' sounds like a crude remix of the Men Behaving Badly theme tune, but the level 3-2 boss theme rocks.

My absolute favourite is Thunder Force V, but a lot of other Technosoft music is awesome, I love the Best of Thunderforce remix disc that comes with the TFV Special Pack.

As for other stuff, most of the Zuntata shmup OSTs are great, but especially the Ray series. And any shmups with music by Hitoshi Sakimoto (e.g. Radiant Silvergun, Soukyugurentai).

Pretty much all obvious choices though. :)

Lords of Thunder! Although I dont think theres an official soundtrack. Just pop the redbook audio in your cd player and your ready.
