Radiant Silvergun 3 on Japanese Xbox 360 (???)
http://www.g-rev.com/Schedule/Xbox360/Jp/schedule.html
Listed at the very bottom of the page. Not yet confirmed by Treasure, but this is on G-rev's schedule list, and the first time the game Treasure is doing for the X360 has ever been termed "Radiant Silvergun 3" on a release schedule. Hmm...

You know what, never mind. That's not Grev's website. Grev's site is www.grev.co.jp not www.g-rev.com .
It's probably just a rumor at this point, if you look at the other titles on that list there's a bunch of stuff that's just vaporware.

Next gen is probably the cause of that. Developers are probably weighing up their options.twe wrote:Well you're right about that. Console shmup releases have come to an abrupt halt.
There's been plenty of nice stuff released over the past couple of years that I haven't really given enough time to, so a little dry spell is welcome at the moment.

Mutant Storm Empire anyone? They're probably going to release this during the holiday season. =\Icarus wrote:Well you're right about that. Console shmup releases have come to an abrupt halt.

The developers & publishers have been having trouble getting past Sony & Microsoft's quality control. It would seem that these two companies don't think that shmups are next gen enough to make the grade. And that's probably why Gradius VI disappeared from the PS3's roster.
My solution would be to move them to the Wii. It's affordable and Nintendo isn't going overboard in the HD department. Hell, Metal Slug Anthology is a launch title, so that should prove that the big N still cares about 2D. http://wii.ign.com/objects/825/825884.html

It's funny. Nine years ago, Hiroshi Iuchi was afraid there was no room for his dream 2D shooter in the 32-bit generation.Alpolio wrote:The developers & publishers have been having trouble getting past Sony & Microsoft's quality control. A friend of mine swears that he saw Slug on the shelf at Best Buy last friday. He went there to buy Red Steel early and I asked him to look for it (and he gave me a call from the store). I didn't go get it because I didn't have a Wii pre-ordered like he did.dementia wrote:It's funny. last i heard, the arcade division of treasure (the shmup boys) were working on a taito-type-X arcade game. that was in a british mag a couple of months ago. although the mag couldn't get to see anything on it. partly secrecy, and partly because the shmup boys apparently like to work only at night-time

The only issue of developing for Nintendo is there high standings for required credentials. If you design a gme for their platform, you have to have an actual office of some sort. par for the course for the big names, but what if someone wanted to start with something new? I guess best to work with Microsoft and Sony's arcade setups, even if it pays little at all.
Eh, just rambling.

Or fricking Warioware Twisted for that matterGungriffon Geona wrote:That definitely wasn't their finest work in my opinion. I would love having a Treasure shooter on the wii, and with Metal Slug anthology as a launch title and the retro service we can expect a very open-minded treatment for 2D gaming on the wii in the future. wii as the next shmup-friendly console would be the bliss. I wonder how good that "classic controller" is!

Are Sony's and Microsoft's Japanese divisions becoming like SCEA?
At least there's still the PC for shmups, especially with the only version of Shikigami no Shiro 3 to date, and a better Raiden III.
With Ketsui, ESPGaluda 2, etc. supposedly being impossible for PS2, could some shmups have been secretly held back for the Wii? IIRC the Wii is more powerful than PS2 and at least on par with Xbox 1. It wouldn't surprise me if Gradius 6 gets moved there considering Gradius has been on Nintendo systems previously.

just to re-iterate my earlier point, a project rs-3 would be on an arcade format first, console port second. in fact ikaruga was initially never destined to be ported on anything...
what worries me now, is that within two/three years, all ps2 games will become phased out. the jap ps2 is probably home to the best selection of "new-school" shooters. after all publishing switches to ps3/next-gen/etc, chances of 2d shooters getting console ports will be pretty much zero. and sega don't want to licence anymore DC releases. how long before we see the death of the console shmup..........?

Again, I don't think this will happen anytime soon. with the way things are going Nintendo will be getting alot more business, or the Arcade services will start becoming a bit more literal. An even grander option: PSP development and DS development becomes more prominent for shmups. you really can't kill it that easily by this point. and besides, I think some of the companies need to take a step into 3D territory anyway. alot of designers have proven that it doesn't impede on artistic ability or style of gameplay.jpj wrote:just to re-iterate my earlier point, a project rs-3 would be on an arcade format first, console port second. in fact ikaruga was initially never destined to be ported on anything...

and as long as the PS3 and 360 have their little download games (and assuming they can compress those game files)
they might live life as a download on the 360 arcade, Sony arcade, Nintendo download or even a Wii game (seeing how open Nintendo is)
